  1. I do this in many of the forums that I frequent - I like to see what games people like to play and sometimes its nice to find other little gems out there like this one. In short just simply post a game that you've played that you think other people may not have heard of or played and why you like it. If possible link to the games website. So..... I'll start - Have you played Dominions 4 - in many ways it does kind of remind me of this game - simplistic graphics but oh so much fun when you get into it and start casting some of the truly unpleasant spells. For those who know nothing - you are a god trying to kill all the other gods and you do this by building castles and armies and shit tons of mages and then having hilariously silly battles involving wyverns and giants and spider riders and whatever - the winner is the last god standing. Spells can be tiny or world spanning global pandemics (blanketing the world in darkness or creating a second sun in the sky - biblical shit basically).
  2. Naa - you want a cavalry bugle doing a "here comes the reinforcements" trumpet. Either that or you want to actually hear the AI commander shit itself as it realises that the battle is now lost.
  3. Does anyone else do what I am tentatively calling ambulance runs across the battlefield with their supply wagons? This is where you draw a ridiculous sort of figure of eight pattern for either your general or his supply wagon so that they can add their wonderfulness to other units. In fact in most of my battles my General and his supply wagon just end up running up and down the rear of the battle line like a pair of spastics trying their hardest to be everywhere and then inevitably die when I forget to pull them back in the midst of some enemy offensive.
  4. Yeah that's still pretty hefty - maybe have 4800 guys armed with a 0.05 pounder gun? But that's quite a lot of people. You'd definitely have communication problems with that many men so maybe some drummers and or a guy with a flag to shout orders for the artillery battery to fire and such. But face it - one 300 pound cannon would be useless against that many mini-cannons and in theory I would have brought less ordinance to battle field. Admittedly the 300 pounder probably needs less people to fire it and would probably have a ridunculous range but my mini-cannon battery would soak it up before winning. I do think that some times I would have confounded even the greatest of military minds!
  5. Flashman and the Angel of the Lord isn't quite civil war but it's all about John Browns raid on Harper's ferry so it goes into detail about the run up to the ACW. Plus all of the Flashman books are hilarious, brilliant and incredibly well detailed.
  6. Don't be daft - quantity not quality is what trumps all. Rather than having a battery of 24x10 pounders or 10x24 pounders or 1x240 pounder - you have to be cunning and clever. I would personally have a battery of 2400x0.1 pounders. Of course the logistics would be problematic. You'd have to have a larger command system with the problems of getting 2400 people to fire all at once. Maybe getting them in ranks and having corporals and sergeants would work. Of course the range on 0.1 pounder cannon wouldn't be great but they'd be far more mobile. Something to think about.
  7. One thing that I have trouble doing is the envelope. I have tried doing it in this game but I can't find a stationary store that does an envelope big enough to fit even a brigade let alone a division or a corps. I also hear that the golden ideal of army generalship is the double envelope so I'm guessing that you need something like 2ply, card or those weird parcels that have that weird asbestos-ey looking lining in them for that. Also I'm guessing that you get the envelopes on the economy screen when kitting your boys out but again I can't seem to see it. Can someone help me with this as Im struggling. Don't know how Napoleon managed it.
  8. Dammit - Now I want to do a video where I edit all the most horrible bits of Glory, God's and Generals and Gettysburg to 99 Red Balloons.
  9. Dear Devs, You have trains, you have ironclads. Why no balloons? Some of the Peninsula Campaign battles should have one since historically they were present!! Any chance of balloons? (I mean artillery spotting observation balloons not balloons for the soldiers or kiddies)
  10. An interesting Easter egg is that multiple infantry brigades can combine with cavalry and artillery to form a Civil War Voltron in the shape of either Lincoln or Davis. The cavalry all go at the bottom to provide mobility whilst the arty goes on either arm and the head to deal damage. Infantry as ever just provides the meat. Be very careful though as if two Voltrons clash they can explode taking the entire battlefield along with them thus resulting in a draw. True dis - not making it up at all - no sirree
  11. Has anyone experimented with making a division of Banditos? All cavalry with rapid firing shooters?
  12. Curious on how people arrange their corps and divisions? Do you balance them out with inf cav and arty or do you put them all together in divisions? I personally go for balance with a couple of inf, some cav or skirmishers and finally some arty. Have people experimented and what have they found to work? I am slightly curious about making a bandito division made up of cavalry all armed with as many repeaters and pistols as I can steal, requisition and buy but have the feeling that this force will be completely useless.
  13. I was told that skirmishers in the UK army were generally the best troops in each regiment. They were expected to be the first to engage the enemy and provide reconnaissance, then engage enemy skirmishers before picking off officers whilst the rest of the regiment would just march in and then blast the biggest target. Grenadier companies were usually heavy mobs made of the biggest and toughest soldiers used for finishing off for dug in troops or for spearheading charges. I think gradually most armies realised that eventually skirmishers were the way that infantry were evolving.
  14. I'm curious about that - I know the game is still beta/early access and all that but it seems like there's something missing there? Is that something the devs haven't finished yet that should be triggering on when your General dies? There already is a wounded list for the other officers (and that can be a hilariously depressing read sometimes) but your created character never seems to appear on it. Sorry I should mention that I'm new here so I'm not really up on what's going and not going to be put in the final finished version? I know more battles are promised but not about any of the intended character developing parts or campaign mechanics.
  15. ...when you grow ridiculous sideburns and not because you are a hipster.
  16. Best tip I can recommend is flanking or as I call it "The flank and wank." If you have even a skirmisher unit adding some extra firepower in the flanks of a unit it makes it far easier to break the unit and push it out of position. Also I found reading up on the German "schwerpunkt" tactics to be quite useful (ie focus an attack where you can achieve local superiority of numbers and break through their line before rolling it up). I also found practicing delaying tactics to be useful (use of skirmishers and fallback mainly)
  17. Bernard Cornwall did a Civil War series if I recall that was quite good.
  18. As someone who also enjoyed his birthday on the 13/12 and who also shelled out the cash for this game I would like to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed playing it. I think the bug reporter is a fairly clever innovation for an early access game and one which I think all developers should take a lesson from since it allows a real-time report for early buyers. I think it also highlights a commitment towards improving the game and trying to iron out problems before general release (the majority I've been posting are mainly poor grammar and I'm guessing that's down to a foreign development team which is understandable). My only problem with the game actually involves the level of video game violence - when you have just had a battle with some 40k+ casualties it's hard not to be slightly appalled even though the violence is being committed by pixel size people. I do seriously think that there should be a warning label of some sort saying : This game does try to accurately portray the first truly modern era war and all the horror that that contains.
