  1. Right before Steam,  I took a journey.  No coordinates, didn't know about burningsails map site.  Took a sheet of trace paper, protractor, ruler and pencil.   Laid the paper on my laptop screen amd brought up map, charted a course by degree from Bermuda to any port,  found one that was an even point on the compass.  Sat at the doorstop of that port, set my course and took off.  Wasn't sure how long it would take so 1 1/2 hours later scanned horizon every few minutes.  Sailed through a long storm and almost 3 hours after setting out was getting frustrated.  As the sun set it was finally clear weather and I scanned the horizon again, at daybreak saw an island off the larbord bow, adjusted course a bit and 15 minutes later made landfall on Bermuda. Over 3 1/2 hours sailing.  I actually cheered which woke my wife up.

TL DR : Found Bermuda using only compass, map and crude charting tools.

Grinding is OK if you focus on one line of knowledge.

That's debatable though.  I scavenged, built forests and mines, sailed around etc.  Finally built a double Sabicu Essex.  To unlock 3rd slot on Essex it goes like this:

Unlock all slots on basic cutter

    Unlock slot 3 on pickle

    Unlock slot 3 on snow

    unlock slot 3 on brig

    unlock slot 3 on Cerberus

    unlock slot 3 on frigate

Then I can grind to unlock slot 3 on Essex. Every step is required.

To unlock slot 4 on Essex, I shudder to wonder...

Like I said, a bit too grindy for me, I will do it, but don't look forward to it.

/edit  Knowing the progression tree beforehand and planning accordingly will probably make a difference, I jumped straight to Frigate then the Essex before grinding in earnest.

  3. It is very simple, make PB lock out time 1800-2200 current server time for PVP Global to allow for maintenance and update patching, and make it take place after the patch is deployed to PVP EU, to mitigate any issues the patch may have caused.

I for one would love the Global server to be West Coast USA, because that would mean good ping for American players, almost decent ping for Aussies, and decent ping for Europeans who choose to play on Global.

Having the global server lock out timer stay the same would go a long way towards further alienating the very people PVP Global was set up for.  I don't think the devs will do this, it would be counterproductive to the game.

  4. How about making the global server based US west coast and set its downtime at 0700 PST.

This would be  a good time for US players, and would be very late at night for Oceanic and East Asian players.  This would mess up my getting in a bit of sailing after work, but I believe would remove the RVR restrictions for the largest sector of players.

Before anyone gets annoyed this would mimic the Euro server downtime which happens after breakfast in Europe.

  5. I agree, I remember Dev stating that a large percentage of new players never make it to the brig stage.  Start them at the brig stage with a basic brig being the starter ship.  No offense to the cutter, but with only one mast, mastering it's sail plan does not translate to the 2 mast or 3 mast ships.

The grind is very arduous for a new player starting out, making some allowances for that and giving a brig as the first ship could go a long way toward people catching the fire to hook them, or at least give the game a good 50 hours.  Newbies leaving in the very early stages out of frustration hobbles us all.

  6. Then recruit people from the US timezone.  In the end this is an Eastern Alliance problem for the Eastern Alliance to work on.  But go ahead and run hollering to daddy dev to make the bad people go away.

  7. Castries scheduled for 8 pm local time for me,  a great time for a port battle.  Don't care what time it is anywhere else in the world.

And I did have an extension cord this time, stupid laptop.

People don't learn on past? What will happens when the lord protector on Castries will setup up 4-6 hour for the pb? We will have to awake up to take the port. Ok we will be rdy on prime time to defend but if we loose it... it's gone forever... it's what happened after the panama war and I don't see anything which can avoid LP to use crazy timer to defend their port...

The attack on Ponce last night was at 7 pm, perfectly reasonable time.  9 pm would have been better, but that time is locked out for "Server Maintenance"

If the Eastern Alliance takes a port, you decide when it is vulnerable.  If the Western Coalition drives up hostility on one of your ports, that PB falls 2 days later, during the time you chose previously.  If we take it, we set the PB time as 2 days after your alliance drives up hostility later.  Nice, even and fair, YOU want one of our ports, YOU make the effort to do the PB during the time it is vulnerable.  Same goes for our side.  I was heavily involved in taking the Yucatan before alliances, spent 10s of millions on flags for Belize, Ambergrease, Salamanca, Cozumel etc.  British players from AROUND THE GLOBE would be online, wake up at 3 am (Jeheil was a prime example, though he was not the only one).  I was in on the Panama War, a continent of Western Coalition forests are in those bays from all the ships sunk.

You will lose a port forever if you don't make the effort to attack, it's very simple.  This is a game, but it is not a European evening only game, it is a global game with global players running around the clock (with the exception of a few hours lock out time that already lock out some US and Oceanic prime time)

The Eastern Alliance, especially France and Spain, have a huge weakness that is easy to capitalise on:  You have an ethnocentric playerbase, in the past your nation has not been welcoming to the English-speaking players that could have avoided this whole situation.  I know several guys who attempted to join and were met with indifference, suspicion, and sometimes outright hostility.  This has been spoken about many, many times.  The amount of bad blood with out small community means this probably won't be fixed now, but when this game rolls out and we get a big influx of new players please pay attention:

Welcome with open arms new players to your nation, greet them, help them, sail with them, teach them.  If you don't speak English and they don't speak Spanish/French/German/Russian, grab a member of your nation who can talk to them.  New players are like puppies, ignore/kick them and they will find another home, the English Coalition has accepted them with some cash to get started, free gold Rattles/Snows at rank 3 etc.

Your lack of players in time zones outside of 6-10pm CET is partly the fault of some members of your nation being xenophobic dicks, please learn from past failures, and stop demanding that mommy go around shooting everyone's left foot, because you shot yourself and can't walk 12 hours a day.
