Focus on EU nations instead of US ships

Recommended Posts

I have been following the forums for a long time, but this has been my first time posting. After coming back from vacation and looking at the development plans for 2017 i decided to make this thread.

As a Dutchman i know that the only time period in which my nation could play a noticable role was the age of sail. The prospect of being able to play Dutch ships played a big role in me backing the project. After i found out that there were no Dutch (combat) ships i was very disappointed. I have a gut feeling that people from Portugal and Spain feel the same way about this. Especially with the great amount of US ships currently in the game. Why not start kickstarters to flesh out these countries first instead of adding even more US ships? I feel like adding or starting kickstarters for these nations would attract a lot of new (and retired) players to the game.

Another ships game which does a similair thing is World of Warships. The devs in it keep on adding more and more ships from a nation which played a very minor role in the time period that game is set in. This in return drives away European players, who have almost no interest in this specific nation. European people get rightfully upset when the biggest nation of the time period has 10 ships while a very minor navy has 30. The only reason the devs of the game do this is to cater to a specific audience, and with it driving away the smaller audiances. I feel like the devs of this game are planning to do the excact same thing.

I just hope that the devs would pay a little more attention to the European nations, instead of the US one. I just really felt the need to show my current frustration with the game, in a hope to improve it.

I apologise for any spelling mistakes in this thread ;).

I agree that it makes little to no sense to focus ship packs on the US as the americans doesn't play a major role in the world untill after WWII..

I really do want to see Dutch ships in the game, and if I am not mistaken there is at least one proper and probably highly competitive warship in the pipeline.

Which is why you need to be careful what you wish for when you state conditions like

  • [..]which played a very minor role[..]
  • [..]when the biggest nation of the time period has 10 ships while a very minor navy has 30[..]

Because you may shoot yourself in the foot and putting yourself at the end of the pipeline with those arguments :)

Spain had a bigger fleet than the Dutch in 1790.
Russia had a bigger fleet than Spain in 1790.

I dont want a lot of Dutch (Or Spanish/Portuguese) ships in the game. Im just trying to point out that they should atleast have some ships. The Americans already have a lot of ships, why give them more when there are other navies that have none? It would be ridiculous to have many Dutch ships in the game and i accept that. This thread wasnt meant to be just about Dutch ships. It was more to point out that there are a lot of nations that really need some love.

With the 30-10 example that i gave i was trying to illustrate that giving too much attention to one specific nation (especially if it didnt play a major role) can drive away or upset players from the left out nations.

Im not saying there should be a lot of Dutch ships (there really shouldnt) im just saying that each nation should be given the amount of ships they deserve, and to not neglect nations to just cater to a specific audience.

Russia had a bigger fleet than Spain in 1790.

But for the period in question the Spanish, British, Netherlands, France and Denmark-Norway were all very active navalpowers.. The russians was NOT a very active navalpower it only had a very progressive building programme that was very ambitious on paper.. (And I don't know where you have the idea that the russian navy was larger than the russian in 1790?),,

You seem to forget the fairly extensive conflicts Sweden had with Russia, and a lot of it was done with ships, including one of the larger battles of the age.

Many of their ships didn't last amazingly long, but I still stand by the fact that in 1790, Russia had more ships than the Spanish Navy, including having more SoL of 64 guns and up.

And you forget that the timeline isn't just 1790.  At the start of the official timeline, the Dutch navy was the number one; and since we have zero ships even though we had a ship win a player selection poll is a slap in the face.

I didn't forget.

But the ship lineup is tilted heavily towards the later part of the 18th century so naval strength in 1790 seems more relevant to the game than 1690 and it is too easy a troll to pass up :)
I like to challenge established consensus about navies of the era, partly because I was fed the same stereotype. It still annoys the hell out of me that Napoleon Total war didn't allow Russia to build first rates when they built/operated more than a dozen of them after the French Revolution with basically only handwaving as evidence and "everyone knows the Russian Navy was crap".

I do agree of course we need Dutch ships, and one of my pet hopes has always been they'd give us battle maps where their customary shallow draught could be an advantage and this might even be already so - I just had a screening battle where basically all SoLs ran themselves aground at some point.
