Almost 1200 hours in the game, I loved playing with everyone around the world, one reason I joined the EU server even though I'm from NA. Best moment I've ever had were all the surprise port battles. One in particular we were on our way when we were met by the defense force going to defend  and ended up having an all out battle in the open sea. I caught on fire and rammed into an enemy ship and decided to blow up and take 'em down with me!

The game was a lot more fun in the early stages after a couple patches with drastic changes it significantly caused the game to become less enjoyable, as you can see from the current population actively playing. I have recently come back to the game in hopes that maybe they will resort to the early mechanics bringing back the majority of the player base, boy would that be awesome! I'm not saying I dislike some of the new mechanics because some I like. Anyways fair winds and following seas Captains!

After 10,000 (yea TEN Thousand) play hours I left because the new mechanics are meh - I miss the Stormy seas of Sea Trials.

I'll keep checking in from time to time to see if a Sea Trials "like" joy can perhaps be scratched out from the load of port battle hogwash.

    toodles...

  2. The reason people stopped playing is simple - the game became non fun - perhaps even NON GAME. You have to work your ass off to get any gains and you can lose them in an instant.

NA became way too much of a second job for me - so I just reverted to my first job more (EVE). After all I only have so many hours a day to devote to "games"

  3. I envisioned another world for this game. Please excuse me for trying to express the world I had hoped THIS GAME would model. I'll call it NAaW - Naval Action alternate World.

A: From the pace of battles in Sea Trials - I "caught" the bug of wanting a world with fast paced, one after another, NEARLY EVEN battles available on demand.

B: After my first week in open world I pined for something to explore to make that sim more realistic, the birds and scenery upgrades helped, but .....

    ------

Here is the TLDR: I think the relationship between Battles and OW is back asswards. I think we have gone down the rabbit hole of trying to make the OW "work" by gluing various forms of failed "battle instances" onto it - a wrong approach from the start IMO......

Look at EVE Online: All Battle Instances - All The Time. Each System is it's own "battle instance". NAaW Would have started with each "county" on the map being it's own Battle Instance with entry/exit gates between each of the 100 or so odd "counties" in NAaW.

Each county could then have it's own "matchmaker" lobby similar to Sea Trials - if it's a Brit County you as a Spanish could hang in the lobby and just fight brits all day long - cool?

Of course Sovereignty and battles for change of Sov would be another thing to figure out, but I think with the entire county being an instance all the time it

    could easily be worked out.

    ------

Aw well, the path not taken ......

  4. Most important to me for repair/rethink is the way battles are instantiated - meaning the way you move from OW to a battle instance and back = totally FUBAR'ed ATM.

Are you kidding me with this? Gank-otopia is all it is = I've gone back to EVE - it's not perfect, but it's certainly content rich and diverse. There if some SOB ganks you, you can at least call in a revenge fleet to chase them.

If the game were fun at the Basic Cutter level, or even at the Rattlesnake level = I would play, it's just not.

Oh wait - no Rattlesnakes ......

  5. If we were not starting with all of our XP and Craft XP from our previous grind - this would be a forever grind = many (most?) would see it as a "never" grind.

As it is it is just an "almost forever" grind, totally unacceptable = I have gone on to other games, am not playing, can't face the horrible horrible grind.

    -----

Please call this failed experiment what it is and move on ....

  6. I was tagged into a screening battle in front of Soto La Marina yesterday - that's all fair. I then figured since I wouldn't make the port battle I should take it out on the US Surprise (I'm Brit) who was the only enemy left. I obliterated the poor Surprise and the game awarded me 24k gold and 314 XP and 6 combat marks after the battle. I proceeded to try in vain to enter the PB and after a few min. I just logged out.

Today I logged back in and sailed to my home port - and noticed that I still had 0/2700 in the first experience slot.

    -----

I want my 314 XP restored to my aggy - you MUST get XP for actual PvP - if not that's a MAJOR oversight.

  7. We got the hostility at Vera Cruz to 100% at about midnight Pacific Time last night (3 hours before server down time) --- I WAS THERE.

But - of course - instead of "flipping" to set a port battle for the next night at 10 PM Pacific Time (as we had been told it would) the "game" decided to apparently glitch out and not flip ....

So that after server down time when SKMARSH came on and noticed the hostility was at 91% ....

    ----

WTF? I mean WTF?  You owe me a night's sleep because of course the Aussies came along and "flipped" it so it is set for 4:09 AM Pacific Time.

    ----

(Mutters to self: and they wonder why I'm cranky)

  8. The PvP mark system is completely and utterly broken. It is nothing but a reward system for sniveling forum warrior cowards. They run in packs and "Farm" any smaller weaker ship they find, but will run like the chicken-tard chicken poo they are if confronted by an even force.

And THESE are the "leet PvPers" you are rewarding?

If you can't figure out the BR discrepancy/ganking issue - this game will never be right.

(OK - begin chiding me that I should play PvE server - you chicken-tards who won't fight me mano a mano)

The pve server has your name all over it. Its one big safe space.

You really only seem to chirp when someone dares to have a differing opinion than you - please refrain from the ad hominem attacks. If you disagree with my position figure out how to say so. As I say to my little Daughter - use your words.

Terrible comprehension yet again. It's a halfway measure to make balance act between what isn't feasible and what is passive and easy, yours is the latter. If you think that your point was actually proven with such terrible examples that would hollow out large chunks of the game, then it's a hopeless case.

Sod off with your silly assumptions, ever since the wipe I've gone trader hunting...twice? And instead spent lots of time doing trading runs all over the place. At least some of us know the difference between what makes for good game design and our own selfish desires. There's a server where you can look at pretty clouds in peace.

I said don't take it personally. Hey, just because all the men on your ship won't speak to you out of fear of your "wrath", don't lump my men in that group.

My men are quite willing the cheer when we knock off a mast, or create loading shock on the enemy gun deck. They are also quite willing to shinny up to the tops and lookout for prey and/or enemy we should avoid.

Sadly, they are silenced by the programming limits artificially imposed.

Well then, let's not stop there.

The captain isn't the lookout - let them warn him of everything and everyone.

The captain isn't manning each gun. Let him tell which side that he wants to fire and don't bother aiming or timing, the crew does that for him.

The captain isn't the quartermaster, let him bother with maintaining the stock of repair kits, rum and cargo.

The captain isn't the navigator, why should he have to check where he's going, just click a point on the map and auto-sail there.

There you go, "realistic", "immersive", all at the expense of gameplay. There are far better ways to achieve those things.

Now since you couldn't maintain an argument without inane ideas of thinking that it's not an issue if you can 'just turn it off' and I'm supposedly a 'total hardcore no life ganker', I'm not going to waste more time on your terrible idea. Good day.

You prove my point and then say good day? - would you play if you had to go to each gun and supervise the loading and aiming of it while under fire?

You just like your style of activities and want the game mechanics bent to your style (as frankly so do I) - that's all this is about - try not to take it personal like poor Mrdoomed did.

And I might add this is much more realistic than the Romulan cloaking exploit the Pirates can and are pulling by just "attacking" each other then waiting in their so called "outlaw" battle while their alt spy calls passing traders for them for free PvP Marks - TOTAL RUIN of the game.

    UI crutches, not a fan.

It's up to the player to maintain awareness of his or hers surroundings, and get punished for failing to do so - it's good fun to do things to try and avoid it (e.g. sneaking into enemy capitals by mimicing/hiding among the AI ships, ambushing folks from behind islands e.t.c. If I were to make a trade run using this I would frankly set the course, minimize the window to only show the compass and be on my merry way only paying attention to red dots.

Total bullpucky - You just want to ambush anyone actually enjoying this beautiful game by looking at the clouds, the sea and the beautiful islands - make it selective so you can turn it off if you don't like it - not everyone is a total hardcore no life ganker like you. Why don't you load your own guns?

Holy crap - the trader already has a 1 knot initial nerf, plus a % speed nerf with load, plus no guns - and of course you like him blindfolded even!

Proper UI that reflects the REALITY of the age (lookouts and all) ---- big fan! even EVE (the most hard core MMO) has a proper Tactical View so you can spot enemies sneaking up on you.

If this "minor" MMO had a proper Tactical View - then NP. But it doesn't.

  13. It seems the biggest "unforeseen consequence" of the PvP Mark system is seal clubbing gone mad. The newest Jr Lt.  in a Pickle is seen only as an easy PvP mark to the ambush predators of the game.

Way to retain new players .....

Some reward for successful escape from an ambush predator would be nice - as that was a BIG part of the reality of Age of Sail. Most fight ended with an escape in reality - captures were pretty rare and quite celebrated

Dont ships already have a lookout ? Isnt the player the lookout? I think what you are asking for in a clever way is a warning signal for all you afk players so you can do other stuff till the computer gives you an audio alarm.

Leave it the way it is, its one of the fee things left that rely on player skill or alertness rather than just special abilities rewarded for time sinks.

Yes im aware my view isnt popular since most players seem to have ADD and have to afk sail.

As I suspected, the "Ambush Predators" are sour on the idea of another player (er victim) having any tools to reduce their "victimness". So how about we take away the mods like sir congreavs sights and melee training and - I know - lets make the trader ships even one more knot slower than the warships!. You know help the ambushers all we can!

Never mind that Lookouts are way more realistic than many parts of the game we are all quite happy with used to, such as the day long North Sea rainstorms we see so much of.

Unless I'm mistaken WE GOT A FREE OUTPOST SLOT ON LAUNCH!!! You just had to pay to build it.

WE ALSO WERE GIVEN 5 SHIPS SLOTS FOR FREE!!!!

Please get over the mentality that everything should be free!!!

(Im guessing your sail for Britain?)

Seems like he made a arguable suggestion - why you gotta be so negative, talking about "mentalities" and such. It's just a suggestion, he's not trying to date your mom.

  16. In reality any Captain would have in his crew many men and boys whose job it would be to "Lookout" for other ships. This game models having crew load the guns and turn the yards so why not lookouts in the OW (and perhaps in battle)?

It would be pretty clear if the Dev's put in a mechanism to show graphically when enemy and friendly ships came into a certain range (say 8 nautical miles) - like this:

    Current sailing gizmo        : ZJ1ZSi

Two Enemy ships show up: zpl1Op

    Then three Friendlies show: FFozbc

This would save the Captain from always having to do the crews work and look out for other ships. I might even go a step further and ask for a "ding" when a ship shows up to take the place of a lookouts call "Sail HO - off the larboard taffrail"

On a frigate at least three people would be on lookout duty at any one time - and they would be thrown overboard if they didn't know a friendly from an enemy ship for the most part.
