No, sir. In fact I cannot fathom the inner workings of those who would want health bars. This game is banking all on ship to ship, skill based combat, part of skill is looking through a spyglass and measuring your opponent's status.
I would like to see fleet battles decided by what Capitains see, not some statistic bar. If we go with bars and graphs and mini maps why even bother creating the beautiful graphics?
OK. Sorry about my post with my phone earlier. I put a film on it to stop scratching which buggered the touch screen sensitivity up.
In principle I agree that the hourglass should bee enough
A few points:
(i) In real life you have crew and officers to give feedback. You also do not have to aim the guns yourself. You can keep looking through the spyglass and analysing the enemy ship.
In game this does not always happen because of the chaos at some shorter ranges
(ii) Damage is often hard to see and the damage models not detailed enough to show through the spyglass how bad below the waterline, or even the end or side of the ship is damaged.
Things do not cave in or show real holes in the side of ships that I have seen. If this improved then fine. Take the abstraction of health bars away.
(iii) The ship should NOT be sinking anyways and therefore no real damage model is going to be accurate. Ships strike colours they do not sink!

we have a few things at work here.
1) simulated crew feedback
2) Damage to ships may never be shown in enough detaail... Bbuutt ccooouldd i guss

Mechwarrior really makes you feel like you are having techs work on your mech for instance.
Here you can spin your mech around and pretty much do anything to it. THis is what I want to see in naval action.
-
Or this kind of view?
What ever view it is it has to be one where you can really admire your ship. It also has to show graphically any changes you have made.- 1

You mean this kind of dockyard view but from the side?
-
I would prefer a hangar with 3D model of the ship in great detail that was cut away and showed options added etc.
Be nice if it looked like a model ship
Mucking around with my ship in the editor and seeing it in the main menu will help me remember which ship I picked, what it has and I will link more to it in game.

i have seen a few moby sick films of late that were ok. I find though that the story is too predictable and the special effects usually over the top... Cue whale swimming on top of the wwater like Disney nemos submarine

great idea but i am afraid not practical unless it had all the proggrammable yard and sail buttons. Also it. Would have to be tiny and would not sell many units.

i am not from potbs. I have no stomach for those who want a game where they can play a fantastical pirate who rules the world.
i want it the way it really was in this period. That is to say nations controlling the world and there privateers.
Nations competing for the seas . Which is exactly why the devs have real world nations setup for people to align there character to.

looking at some of the u tube vedios i myself will be sad if i have to see these old men in bad pants doing repetative actions all day.
so i wud like the abitity to get rid of my crew with one exception,,we are gender biased here,,all i saw were old farts in bad pants.
but if i had the choice of a crew on my xebec corsair id be sailing with all woman,,with tight panties and high heels,,now thats a crew
of course my officers wud wear really cool uniform dresses,,but man get rid of the old farts in bad pants,,they are a drain on my
computer,,they are not needed becouse if any one was to be on the deck it be me and my avatar,,so regardless we need an option to
get rid of the crew,,the ship will sail just fine with the invisable computer controlled math baliistics knowing how many of the crew died
in the last volly stuff,,and if we are forced to keep the crew visually seen let us have the option for male or female crew,,you know girls
will play this game too,,and i judge a game by how many girls,,(real girls) not old fat farts,,,) are plaing in the game,,
Are you drunk sir?
If I have it right you are objectifying women and denigrating them?

This might be a possibility: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_ship_Fenix_%281749%29
Launched in 1749, broken up in 1836.
Nice 80 or so years of service. I do like 80 gun SOLs....

???? What does that mean? It was written by a historian.
I was simply asking the question. It was a question not as statement as I am not familiar with the author.
I try to read books that are written by authors that are from both sides of any conflict and where possible neutral. Historian or not
I have read far too many books that clearly have a patriotic leaning and maternal feeling towards the subject matter. Patton in fact
is one of the worst for nationalistic fervour in authors.
Sure somebody who comes from the same country can be impartial but often you just have to make sure you are aware a grain of salt may be needed even
with a historian. People are people. Historian or not.
But don't get me wrong. I was not judging just asking.

i agree. Forget the avatars. Perhaps instead have a custom uploaded captains photo on your ships config menu?

was six frigates written by a pattriot or impartial obbserver?
-
I see. I just thought it may be something to add as an option. A disadvantage for choosing a cheaper design.

Not if you are playing COOP with friends....
Very enjoyable playing coop with friends.
Did it yesterday and the other tester died early. I either had to quit or he had to wait.
He could have been in one of our other ships ............
-
Suggest this as otherwise everybody has to wait for a long time currently.

Some larger poorly built or designed ships suffered from either the middle bending either up or down.
This in turn caused performance issues.
-
Exactly. Just the latest one. I was just trying to illustrate that some of these ships served for close to 100 years.
Victory ended her active career in 1812 actually. 47 years of active service.
I wonder what the longest serving ship of the line would be.

-
I agree. The older ones do look better in terms of decoration. The newer ones have better lines and are probably out tougher. I must look at when vvictory was launched.
-
ok if game staarts in 1690 i guess there is not much change
-
mirones so you think it will be fine to mix the earliest ships with the latest in this game?
also considering it looks like most will start the game wiith late model ahips
-
It will be very strange to have an early 1700s ship breaking the HMS victory with smaller cannon?
-
Looks like old good Cerberus form PotBS...meh nice ship:)
these kind oof comments are why i always prefer devsto sttick with history. Then at least what. Isabsorbed is at least in some way real learrning. What this gent has learnnnt is even reverse learning because it nott just not learned its learnt wronng on purpose.
Enemies visible damage Yes or No (Health Bars)?

An additional thing that health bars do is let NEW players understand what exactly can be shot up and to what level of detail.
Without this you may as well assume that like a lot of dumber games that their is one giant health bar for the whole ship and that shots from any angle are cumulative as a whole.
I believe you need tangible feedback or nobody will just assume that you can hit below the waterline and cause leaks or destroy guns above the waterline.
Well I guess you have your own damage model and feedback from that to give you that detail
