  1. Different ship different styles, Henry has pointed out several tactics you may wish to try (if you have not already) you can even back a sail beyond a luff to force your heel into opposite direction, not saying that something is not wrong with the ship, but it may be the ships design rather than any fault or bug. Worth a few more Bell users voicing there findings..!

  2. you guys are talking a modern day ship....not back in the day

Modern day ships developed from where?  (back in the day i believe) In my defence I did mention square rigs in my comment too.

Having the real life experience of sailing in many old gaff rigged wooden boats, techniques have not changed at all, the wind is doing the same thing to a wooden pole and rigging today as it was 200 years ago.  Coming from the Uk and it's very rich and extremely long sailing history, many folk are still using traditional materials, it is not an all plastic world yet :) thank god. In fact the last boat my father built, (gaff rigged ketch) we even selected the trees ourself in the forest, and had  them felled and then stored at home (seasoned for several years) where they were worked with both modern tools and old (adze give great blisters) to become main, mizzen and top masts. All very nautical and rather wonderful thinking back on it.

Sorry got lost in the memories there, point being backing, sails is fine and dandy and no greater strain on anything. Honest it is a perfectly usable sailing techniques 200 yrs ago and to this day.

  3. "You jumped up never come down fatherless son of a Chinese seaweed eating sea camel

This is something my father used to say at rare times, i have no idea why or if it had any origins beyond his own sailing/boat building joys but i begin to wonder if all those years ago he was preparing me for the days to come when Naval Action insult Generator would be born!!!!

Good job and for those of us who remember the birth of the Internet when people from all over the globe started meeting and playing games together, the days before this generation of foul mouth disrespectful horn swaddled sea scum, when said people were pleased to meet each other and there was a certain awe and respect.

This is not the internet, it is what you/we have made it it was never like this at it's birth and those who say it cannot be different have no idea about what it once was. lack of self respect leads to no respect, If people are unwilling to try to improve themselves than there is no hope for them, does not mean the rest of us have to be dragged down to the murky depths with em.

Good job Mods and may the hair on ya ass never grow inwards!

  4. I like the thought of running a business in game, however i also like the thought of land being something we fight for control off and it has certain produce, for example, French and GB contested territory, in which a series of battles take place or something of the sort for that nation to own and control for a limited time, so as of resources, we're fighting over them and there is a requirement for other nations to purchase these resources that span over different areas.

hve a look at that topic :)

  5. I remember listing to the BBC shipping forecast and the list of all the shipping areas lighthouses and vessels listed.

Sailed past quite a few of them in my past. Bring on the lighthouses :)

  6. I vote we try both systems in test :)  but right now, how we get there will be easier to solve in the long term once we know what we have to do when we arrive, rather than focus on, and go round and round about, how to get there, for which there are 2 options we can test, how about we bash out the actual difficult part as in the actual combat part of the scenario ? I see this as our main problem, not the sail there or beam me up scotty part.

  7. Let's assume there are 40 defenders actually at the port for 25 slots. Who will be able to join?

How about they are allowed in as ships are killed? both sides could have an x slot available for reinforcements outside the instance to replace lost ships?? Just a thought on that point.

  8. As muturin say hove to is when you deliberately put your ship in irons so to speak, although being deliberate it might not be irons, there are many reasons to do so in real life and i have yet to lose a mast in real life ever, although it came close on one occasions in scary weather crossing the Biscay. But hove to is a no damage situation, and a vital part of backing up a square rig ship to pass through the wind.

  9. Ok, I'll give that a shot, I've heard that the lynx just isn't very good and to drop it as quickly as possible. Thanks for the tip!

anyone saying it is no good is probably not using it correctly to its best advantages, took my ole girl out for a spin last night and hit a trader snow for old time sake, with the exception of one bouncing shot as i closed it could not hit me at all, i just chased it round in circles out of its angle of attack, due to my fore and aft rig allowing me to turn tighter and pass through the wind without losing much speed. Them ole square rigs are slow through the wind use that. Result one dead Trader Snow and not any damage to me at all. The ship is fine once the tactics are learned, it is a tricky little ship to master maybe, but it is probably the best ship to learn in because it teaches you everything that need due to it being harder to control at first. If there was an idiot proof first ship, then people with no real life sailing experience would not learn basic wind/sail/turning skills and would stay in a limbo of not knowing for a longer time.

Lynx is a great little teacher...Long live the Lynx!

Of course it is just a stepping stone on your way up, the Yacht is a nice ship and very cheap, the navy brig is also nice if a little bit over shadowed by the newer Merc. Enjoy them all :)

Keep at it, watch some vids about using the wind to your advantage and may the force be...err wrong game, may the wind be with you!

  10. it is very obvious what happened, your gold was cut by the patch and the game sets you to pirate if you attack a Neutral or fellow countryman. As these are you main concerns they are both well documented why is their any need for F11 this is perfectly normal. By attacking the wrong ship you are set as Pirate therefore all ships and stores are seized by the crown when you are booted from your position within you nation. If you are unaware of having done this then maybe a younger brother hopped on your comp and did it for you, but being set as pirate is part of game play not a bug. Admin can confirm if losing Rank is also part of the pirate trip.

  11. we had a mortar brig dont ask any further why she is gone we have our reasons

Ok i did not know it had ever been in game as yet, was excited to try a different style :) Does this mean there will not be a mortar ship at all then? ( "at all"  being relative in an Alpha)

Edit woops sorry you said don't ask why... delete post if you wish.

    • No PVE to PVP. We are against grinding NPCs to get the port battle opportunity
    • Timezones have to be taken into account
    • Night flipping problem must be fixed fully or partially - when a committed group of players conquer a series of ports at 4am against defenseless enemies
    • Guild wars 2 WWW/Tol barad situation have to be handled - when 3 warring groups run around the map conquering castles avoiding each other to maximize rewards
    • Port loss must be painful, but not devastating
    • Variability of ships in port battles

How about if a port battle had to take place over a period of time, several key battles, several wearing down of defence levels, for example a 24 hour period. This would allow more players to partake and cover all timezones?

It would also do away with the night flipping probs. So Ports could have player defence fleets and how about one set of battles against player controlled land guns/towers, maybe once the battle started they could be an hour/2 hour match that folk could join in on then a pause to re-group allowing newer players to log in and have there crack? This might even allow traders to run supplies in to the fleets too??

if it was a 24 hour battle it would also stop any quick take over of a whole chain of ports.

Numbers/times ideas all up for grabs, just a quick thought on some of it.

Edit if it was over 24 hours or some lengthy time players could travel and not teleport too, which is a bit of a slippery magical slope.

  12. All of a sudden I find myself in the Open World.   What happened to all my progress in sea trials??  Is there a manual or instructions on how and what to do in the Open World.  My first ship, Lynx has no guns for instance.

I am lost.   Any maps, compass, etc??   Totally Lost here.

    Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the early stage of the game, to get started buy your self some guns, bit tricky i know but there is a big tab at top of page in port that has the option for where you need to go, you want the one that says SHOP it is the area you buy things.... ships cannon and bolt on goodies. After buying cannon/ i thought basic lynx came with free 4lb'ers anyway?? Hit the sail button top center, then sail. First ship is free basic lynx is always free, and repairs to it are free

Edit  you do not see the guns on your ship in the OW at present, they are seen when you enter battle mode.

  13. Hi Mikedabay.

Hull copper planking started around the middle of the XVIII century.

Ok you got me looking and found an excellent source all about this info. I was aware that copper sheathing was introduced then, i was unaware when they first used copper fastenings too, as they were not aware of what was causing, and how to counter the effects between copper and iron underwater.

Anyway your reply got me googling and i found this.... http://www.academia.edu/358814/The_Introduction_and_Use_of_Copper_Sheathing_-_A_History very imformative piece i feel.

    For devs,

maybe an upgrade from iron nails to copper fastenings might be something you could use as a life extender to ship??

  14. I see no reason to have to walk around with a character through streets and open doors and stuff, it was that part that stopped me from wanting to play POTB and the like, they seemed unrealistic and completely not what i personally was waiting for and wanting in an age of sail game... this how ever is, shore side business yes, silly little cartoons with speech bubbles not my mug of rum at all, i think there are plenty of little kiddy sailing games already. Long awaited a game that focuses on the ships and the combat. Managing a shop/tavern etc i am happy with, but please no silly cartoon like characters, completely spoils the reality of a game like this.

This game is going to be so much more than POTBS please stop trying to turn it into a copy of something a lot lesser.

  15.

    * Can't count my money or my xp when at sea (AFAIK)

You have a pop out menu top left from which you can access your holds, where you can repair in OW using the repair kits you get after a battle at times, and at the bottom there is your current money and xp level and level needed to next promotion. This is all available in OW not battle.
