Some sailors prefer the wind to stay stationary ie from the top of the compass rose whilst the ship icon rotates within the rose, in this mode I find it easier to assess my situation. A quick glance and you can see the position your ships lies, this does help for people with not perfect eyesight as well as the ship icon is big and can be seen easy.
