Google books for historical researches : too few results after a search

Hello.

For some time, when searching "old" books with publication date as a limit, google books find very few books.

Example :
Napoléon, full view, before 1850 : 6 results only ! "Google books only" give more results, but still laughable.
https://www.google.com/search?hl=fr&tbo=p&tbm=bks&q=napol%C3%A9on&tbs=,bkv:f,cdr:1,cd_max:31+d%C3%A9c.+1850&num=10

Whereas, Hathi, whith fewer books references in its library, finds 175 000 results.
http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/ls?a=srchls&anyall1=all&q1=napol%C3%A9on&field1=ocr&op3=AND&yop=before&pdate_end=1850&facet_lang=&facet_format=

If i remove the date of publication limit, it seems i find more books written before 1850 than an advanced search with 1850 limit.
However all the books does not appear.
Cause some time ago i registered a few googlebooks webpages of books with the search key words.
I'm unable to find anymore the same books using the same keywords. But the books are still there.

I have tried with firefox and google chrome. Friends of mine experience the same problem.

Did Google change something ? Is there an option i have missed or something i'm doing wrong ?

Thanks for your help.

If you are looking after Napoleon timeline you should look Premier Empire. That's the name French historians give napoleon rule after he became Empereur de la France.

For former periods there are "La France Revolutionare" if you are interested on it i could do a mini research about what you are looking for.

EDIT: Most of Books in French ofc.

Early books are quite tricky about Napoleon and French Revolution and mostly are a "War of Ideas" especially early first hand chronicles about Revolution by Louis de Bonald, Joseph de Maistre (ideological founders of the two kinds of counter-revolution movements in XIX century).

Google books isn't that good for old books you can check:

https://www.gutenberg.org

-->Almost 50.000 copyright free old books, some about Napoleonic wars too.

http://www.cairn.info/revue-napoleonica-la-revue.htm

-->Really good contemporary historical analysis about Napoleonic empires sponsored by Napoleon Foundation (All in french)http://www.napoleon.org

http://gallica.bnf.fr/?〈=EN

-->Massive official free access French database mostly in French but also some in English and other languages and a mayor part of it are digitalized delightful for any historian.

If I found more free access pro-level historical sources I edit that or sum all webs in one new thread.

Ty Karnaught. I'm interested if you know other website.

French is not a problem since i'm french ;)

I have  used google books for years, mainly for books printed between 1700 & 1850, and more precisely printed during the end of the XVIIIth century and the napoleonic times.

Google books used to be really efficient with tons of XIXth, XVIIIth books. Then i stopped working with google books for a while and when i came back, i discovered google books became inefficient.

The google books library is the largest online library, with a lot of old books, but Haithitrust give a lot more results  with less books (however, i'm unable to find figures about the number of public domain books scanned in google books) It seems many old books vanished from the google search result whereas there are still available online.

Other website i use :

https://archive.org/

Many books are from google books. No full text search.

http://www.hathitrust.org/

The second largest online library after google books. Most of the books are from google books. Full text search, but a bit clumsy, as not as efficient as the google full text search. Impossible to dl books, except if you are a "partner".

http://gallica.bnf.fr/

A lot of french books. Full text search, but a bit clumsy, as not as efficient as the google full text search. Books scanned some time ago are not avalaible in full text.

I still don't really know https://openlibrary.org/ and https://www.worldcat.org/, but seems to be good tools to find books and ebooks.

This page about public domain books website :
