  1. Remember this is in all good fun,,,I love a challenge when given, n accepted...........

Well Showcase, Koro has thrown down the gauntlet, Its is now up to you to pick that Gauntlet up, n accepting that challenge!

Perhaps we shall see then............With whom really has the 2 marbles rolling around.

I'm at the betting window, just like at the horse track.

You are doing a lot of Barn Barking in your thread. Just like Jockey's/Trainers sometimes do in the Stable's....

But when Parade to Post is called..... they make up 'dime store excuses' as to why there horse is scratched from the race.......

In this case take up the Challenge/Fight him on the battlefield...Is your Generalship up to the task? You do have the choice in Army n Battlefield .....

Hopefully you will meet the Challenge.

    Don't up and just disappear....

I would also like Koro to video this n play 2 out of 3...

100$ Bucks is on Koro to beat you by 2 lengths...... ;)

    Cheers,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  2. As an experiment, I just played a bit of the first day as the Union against Confederate determined.

Cutler occupied Oak Ridge, on high ground with 78% cover. Davis attacked, between McPherson's Ridge and Oak Ridge with no cover at all. Davis inflicted 38 casualties with his volley, Cutler delivered 36. Meanwhile, Calef's artillery battery delivered a ludicrous 300 casualties, while Davis was barely in range.

I hate to say it, but on my end I think this patch may have broken the game :/

Well Mr. Mercanto, I agree with your Feedback/Assessment with the above post.

The Artillery being to powerful with Shot at Range /// With Cutler in cover, + an added Advantage stationed on Higher Ground.

-Cover is a double edged sword.

-Now with the effectiveness of cover, and how I understand it n should mirror a fire fight just like IRL...

This will effect the Soldiers 'Line Of Sight', with incoming, and outgoing Musket Fire.

Cutler is in heavy cover 78%, This will limit his LOS to Davis.

-Thereby his effective fire(Cutler) is limited with not being able to have a direct fire into/at Davis.

-The enemy 'Davis' also has decreased LOS to Cutler(Lower n in the open, an added disadvantage),

giving a diminished effective fire at/into Cutler.

    - Now With Cutler having the Higher Ground, in good 'cover his Brigade will have an advantage in Kills/Hits.

-As Distance increases from Hill,(Higher Ground) LOS will increase for Cutler.

Whereas Davis will have a Decrease in his hit/kill rate in rounds fired...imo

-With No Screen Shot to give a more accurate relative assessment, (i.e Strength/Placement-Distance to Combatants.)

Throwing guesstimate numbers in the air, I would say in that situation Cutler should of had

    the advantage in kills... ~(2 - 1)...Cutler 36 Kills // Davis ~15-18 kills......

    .................

But with a game...n trying to mirror what happen's in a Real Life Battles can be a challenge, n next to impossible in certain situations....

I will add this is a Great Game....regardless...

  3. I feel like the damage modifiers are really unbalanced in this update. I've watched the Iron Brigade, on high ground, with cover (Oak Ridge) lose volley after volley against Davis's Brigade, which is totally exposed on low ground. Its gotten to the point where the only way I can win is using canister fire, as my brigades cannot fight the Confederates under any conditions,

I never had this problem before, but I after the 1.55 update I really feel like the game is almost unplayable. No matter what the conditions, no matter what the brigade strength, in a shoot out battle the Union always loses now. Am I the only one this is happening to?

Mercanto.,, So if I understand you correctly the AI(ANV) is over Powered?

Let me know the Map//Setting, you used for your Fight.....

I want to play this out with both sides n take ScrnShots of the Battle, with reports.

The brigade on the higher Ground with cover usually are the winners in a Gun fight weather AI or Player,,from what I seen/played

given the Brigade rating */**/***...... n Numbers involved.

If I give up the higher ground(AoP) it is usually I am also getting Hammered with Artillery, while in a Gun Fight...But than again that's me

n there are a lot of different circumstances with this(Settings/Maps)

I always play Determined against the AI,,so the AI's(ANV) Offensive/Defensive strength is tough,,,

which I like..sometimes I can win, Usually it's a Draw/Defeat on bigger maps where the AI is Defending with good Arty support...

But what I like could be skewed....towards being unbalanced with damage modifiers as you alluded to....

Did A Battle with both sides                                              Arriving At Gettysburg

    ANV // AoP // Determined

Now with different settings the game allots different strengths / weakness for the Player/AI I believe.....

So this is why I play with Determined Only.

-But this is my take only...Also my views on Arty is a few Posts above...

  4. Constructive n Pertinent feedback is always welcome,

    Threads Title states that.

Weather they decide to use it is another matter.

OK here is a look at the Unions Artillery in action.

-Now within 1 minute, with two maybe three broadsides from 2-4 Batteries(12-24 Guns) as far as I can see,

did in fact kill 30 men of Smiths Brigade.

Now as you can see The brigades of Gordon's' n Smith's were only receiving Artillery fire,

n with distance it was solid shot.

In 24 minutes those 2 Brigades had 201 men killed.

Gordon rolled onto the field with 1508 Muskets, n lost 157

Smith rolled South with 805 Muskets, n lost 41.

At that point I quit to post here with my observations.

    So something is amiss here....imo

    http://imgur.com/a/jFISO#0

  5. David...Pls bear with me here...this is a bit long winded...

    Concerning Overly powerful Artillery..

I have been thinking on this for a while.

Specifically the Unions' Batteries' and there lack of being vulnerable to battery counter fire,

and with there ability to inflict high Damage from distance.

I like you post above, With Historical examples. With Correcting the high shot to kill ratio seems sound.

Your analogy, n how to go about obtaining a comprehensible fix was concise/thoughtful.

    ---As you mentioned:

-Unsupported artillery were easily destroyed with Skirmishers.

-Even Brigades would quickly silence them when the opportunity arose.

(This is well done with the AI in game(Skirmishers/Brigades.)+++

    ---

As with my last post the Union's Batteries were pounding me from afar with shot.

i.e Seeley/Arnold/Buckley/Clark. South, in the Vicinity of the Snyder farm.

They had an extremely high shot to kill ratio..imo.

Those batteries were/had to be close to a 1000+ meters away

    http://i.imgur.com/ksSmYZx.png

Now with my supported artillery in the same game had a big advantage with me firing down, n into massed brigades

the first half, is a different story.

It can be argued that Wyall's/Wallace/Graham/Reilly/Hurt's batteries did in fact have

a bit higher that average kill ratio. But than again in a game......

    http://i.imgur.com/2ndIB4t.png

The inability to detach skirmishers, n with the way the Developers have now kept the Artillery behind the front Lines

it is damn hard to get at them.+++

I do use the Skirmishers to guard Batteries, so I can cause a delay action when a brigade approaches for said batteries to limber n scram.

Also I Order/Send skirmishers at hand to take under fire n hopefully destroy batteries that are hammering/harassing me.

    *---------------

Weather your idea for a fix is doable in game, and/or if the developers want to

undertake this job with(Gettysburg) at this time is another matter.

This fix could be quite the undertaking if was agreeable with them, n they have stated that they will not be doing any more

    coding for this game.

I would like to see a hot fix though with the long range Artillery(Unions only)

whereas % would be lowered with kills/accuracy.

With Supported Artillery in closer quarters, it is acceptable with the rounds/type fired--- % Hits/Kills.... imo..

As stared by the Dev's, a lot of this feedback can n will be considered in the next Battle(Antietam.)

I believe that's where the resources should be concentrated now on (Antietam), in my humble opinion.

David you have a wealth of historical information with the ACW.

I enjoy reading  your posts as I usually learn things ,n appreciate your participation

with voicing them here, as I imagine/know others do as well.

-It's quite the tight rope the developers have to walk with trying to have

the game as real as possible, while still bring us a enjoyable experience with this game.

This I understand n appreciate, compromises are n have to be made.

-Mr. Thomadis I know is well read on the subject, n works hard to get things' right....

With us working together observing/making suggestions to implement going forward....

this game(Ultimate Generals)/Future Game(s) can only get a lot better.

With that said I really enjoy this game, I still have only played half of all custom maps.....

Plus the maps I do replay always play out differently.

This within itself speaks Volume's for the replay Value of UG:G................

    Cheers.....

  6.  {Determined//ANV}                                                                    - The Unions 2nd and 3rd Corps Flanking Maneuver -

    http://imgur.com/a/SC2aX/layout/horizontal#0                                                           - July 2nd 1863, 06:30 -

    Good battle.

    Pettigrew's n Davis' Brigade's,

are missing from the Initial formation of the game,

    n throughout the Battle.

    Battle Report: http://imgur.com/a/SC2aX/layout/horizontal#13

    Also missing 3rd. Corps Commander.

This is why I have advocated for Divisional Cmdr. to be present

on the field, if n when Divisions are Alone/Attached.

Heths' Divisional Brigades'/Batteries' became Battle Fatigued n was hard to get

there Morale n Condition to regenerate, thereby easily routed.

  7. PrezesOi----I agree trench warfare would be boring as a game of this type.

    But,

Neither of these Battles mentioned were trench warfare fights/battles.

    @ Lettow-Vorbeck..............Marne, East Prussian campaign of 1914??

Did you mean The Tannenberg Campaign in East Prussia 1914?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_invasion_of_East_Prussia_(1914)#/media/File:BattleOfTannenberg1.jpg

    ---

    In North Eastern France:

The First Battle of the Marne was fought from 5–12 September 1914. The battle was composed of three major actions:

The Battle of the Ourcq, 5–9 September; 6–9 September; the Battle of the Two Morins, 6–11 September; and the Battle of the Saint-Gond Marshes,

as well as numerous ancillary engagements.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Battle_of_the_Marne

    *********

The Eastern Front for the most part was 1600 km long.

The battle lines on the Eastern Front were much more fluid and trenches never truly developed.

This was because of the greater length of the front.

The Brusilov Offensive of June 1916:

The Austrians lost a staggering 1.5 million men (including 400,000 taken prisoner) and ceded some 25,000 square kilometers of ground.

Blunts Tutorial is a great guide to help manage your game  woos  http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/1868-blunts-tutorial/

    Condition

Morale directly affects (and is affected by) a unit's condition. This factor is a combination of the current physical state of the unit and an "abstracted" status of its supplies. The unit's condition is affected by its speed, terrain and the distances it has to cover. The use of firepower increases unit fatigue and the need for resupply. You have to be cautious when using your run or charge to conserve a unit's condition. Constant assaults will exhaust and disorganize them. Infantry units are also not suited to engagements involving long marches. Remember that a unit in bad condition will lose its morale more quickly. You can replenish the unit's condition by placing it in a safe location and near a General.

Batteries will Play themselves out and deplete to 0 morale/ condition when left to keep firing freely. You have to watch them, keep batteries closer to main Battle, but not too close.

Change to Canisters/Shell this will stop the Battery firing from great distances. Solid Shot has little effect at distance n will deplete all there ammo, in short order.

Group a few Batteries in Reserve to preserve, than rotate/replace others that are wearing down n need to rest n rearm...

There is only so much ammo a caisson can carry, Ammo must be replenished

If you stop them firing before they run out of ammo they will replace ammo i.e Condition. Don't leave them isolated,

Watch some of the Game play Video's by some of the best players, more than once.

You are the only one stopping yourself from mastering this game, determination is need in learning,

to where you can give players a good go in MP and/or getting Victories Playing AI on the hardest Level...

Managing you Army properly will give you a nice Battle/Good Fun. Read the online Guide. Get a grip with Games mechanics. Read Blunts Tutorial a few times, take notes.

Lots of use had trouble n not just you with the games mechanics/understanding at first..

The only time I had a  'problem understanding a game n getting frustrated, throwing my Hands in the air... was when I didn't 'first help myself.

This is a great game, Play with Defensive AI, Study/Read into ACW Military Tactics, realize your Army is just that an Army with limitations,

Utilize your Commanding General in a way that helps to rebuild Morale/Condition Faster. Keep you Army together to Support there Battle/Increase Fire Power....

Pull Arty Back/ Change Ammo types to conserve. Pull back units to rest, rotate Batteries/Brigades in n out to keep up a great Defense / Offence.Know when to fall back/charge...

Manage..manage..manage,, understanding Unit limitations..understanding Game mechanics is the Key....

to a great game in SP//MP..,,

Battle will Be delayed if the AI or you try to retake a VP....

Watch out for the sneaky AI as He will try n slip behind you to Back Cap a VP....

Cover you ass with a small unit n a Recharged Battery or 2, just in case of that.....

  9. Thx David very interesting. I have put that on my list of things to order from amazon in the near future."The Wartime Papers of Robert E. Lee"

The Local Library here doesn't have in stock.

The University of British Columbia has it in ebook,

but is reserved for Registered Students in Studies.......

    -----

Here's a link to a site you probably have read,

Also may be of interest to others....

Southern Historical Society Papers, Volume 14..
'Reminiscences of field ordnance service with the Army of Northern Virginia—1863'

During the campaign of 1862, which, as General Gorgas says, was the hardest year upon his department,

the perplexities of ordnance officers in the Army of Northern Virginia were frequently relieved by important captures from the enemy.

    -------

The troops at this time were armed in a heterogeneous fashion. Many of the men had smooth bore muskets, caliber .69. Others had rifled muskets, caliber .54; and others still had Springfield muskets, caliber .58. There were some other arms, as, for instance, some Belgian rifles, caliber .70, but the three kinds I have mentioned were the principal kinds in the hands of the infantry in January, 1863.

We were all anxious to replace the smooth bores with rifles, and especially with caliber .58, which was the model the Confederate as well as the Federal Government had adopted. The battlefields of the preceding summer had enabled many commands to exchange their smooth bores for Springfield muskets, but as nine-tenths of the arms in the Confederacy at the beginning of the war had been smooth bore muskets, it required time and patience to effect a complete re-arming.

This was finally done in the Second corps at Chancellorsville, but in the winter of 1862-‘63, there was often found in the same brigade the three kinds of arms above enumerated, and the same wagon often carried the three kinds of ammunition required..........

  10. snip.........We have different definitions of "military genius"....

...................I'd credit Hood with the destruction of the Army of Tennessee. What a dufus - Lee warned Jeff Davis that Hood would destroy any army under Hood's command before Jeff Davis appointed Hood to command....snip

I agree^^^, Thx for the added info concerning Lee with Davis, never knew that, I would like to know where you learned that, book?, If so could you tell me the name so I could obtain it..

The Book, 'The Confederacy's Last Hurray'  By ' Wiley Sword(Spring Hill / Franklin / Nashville) was an eye opener for me.. Especially at the Battle of Franklin....

where Hood was n what he was doing when the battle was going on,,,Its very hard to believe....But I have come across a few sources...that pretty well state the same...

    ***********************************************

*The Battle of Franklin was fought on November 30, 1864, at Franklin, Tennessee, as part of the Franklin–Nashville Campaign of the American Civil War.

It was one of the worst disasters of the war for the Confederate States Army. Confederate Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee conducted numerous frontal assaults against fortified positions occupied by the Union forces under Maj. Gen. John M. Schofield and was unable to break through or to prevent Schofield from a planned, orderly withdrawal to Nashville.

The Confederate assault of six infantry divisions containing eighteen brigades with 100 regiments numbering almost 20,000 men, sometimes called the "Pickett's Charge of the West", resulted in devastating losses to the men and the leadership of the Army of Tennessee—fourteen Confederate generals (six killed or mortally wounded, seven wounded, and one captured) and 55 regimental commanders were casualties.

After its defeat against Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas in the subsequent Battle of Nashville, the Army of Tennessee retreated with barely half the men with which it had begun the short offensive, and was effectively destroyed as a fighting force for the remainder of the war.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Franklin_%281864%29

  11. Wow.  Some fantastic detail/history here......snip

......And as someone else said, any historical game can go down a very long and hellish slippery slope of "realism" that would tie the devs up for years on this one game.

They have a business to run and, apparently, Antietam to work on next.....snip

Agree....^^ Realism outside weapons(Ballistics/Cofficient(ranges/fall off) is a difficult thing to achieve... Lets face it,,With realistic weapon behavior ingame, the numbers will be askewed.

Some Players have a lack of knowledge with period tactics(me included). Cannonade/Batteries/charging of positions(Batteries/front lines) in game.

This result's is a slaughter with a high unrealistic number being killed. With Cannonade particularly which in turn does reflect unrealistic numbers killed with the weapon's/war.

I have found that the proper use as far as 1 can utilize in game will reflect a more realistic outcome in Numbers/situation killed.

With David's Posts, he does his home work n is well read/learnt/educated on the subject, which promps me to

do my own research/reading(Hobby) for my own satisfication/curiosity.

One point that I never knew, or read about until David mentioned it. Which is largely ignored in historical writings.

Front line troops would adopt the prone position, when in a fire fight in certain battles/situations(Open Field/Area)...

Perryville comes to mind, here is a copy n paste

    ---

For four years – from Shiloh to the last battle – these four Tennessee regiments of Maney’s Brigade,

Cheatham’s Division, were comrades in arms, each assured of the support of the other in critical emergencies.

Captain Malone’s account of the Perryville battle is as follows:....

.......and in the field I saw the 41st Georgia and the 6th and 9th Tennessee Regiments lying on the ground,

engaged in a bitter fight with the line of the enemy on the edge of the hill in their front,

which was supported by Parsons’s Battery of eight, '12-pound Napoleon guns.

It seemed to me that our men could not have maintained our position at all but for the fact that old Turner – the best artilleryman, but the poorest drilled man in the army

    https://busenbarkcivilwar.wordpress.com/2011/09/03/ningan-steele-lindsey27th-tennessee-infantry/

    ---

Hell of a charge there,, that took balls to run into those Cannons/Supporting Infantry.

    -----

With that said there is problems with artillery/Melee/ ranges, but is a wip.

But these things are relative minor...imo/ but none the less at times quite irritating.....but is being looked into/fix/patch...if I read correctly.....

I believe the next project(Sharpsburg) will be a lot better as the Dev. has posted, with engine improvements,,etc...

  12. An Idea:

@ husserl that post #6 would be nice if you could repost that in the tutorial Thread?

Better still Start a New Thread .....UG:G 'Battlefield Tactics'.....Pinned

I seen also that you have posted some other good Battlefield tactics in other threads

    that seems, good/proven.....

This I believe would open discussions as to why certain Players in the same circumstances will think their Tactic is Better/Superior...

With that, simply put forth a challenge n take it to the Field, too duke it out....This could be interesting with

A.A.R. / Screenshot's....with following talks on to why the success or failure of said Tactic?

This will give you Problems if an Old Saved game is loaded into a new Update/Patched game...

Your best bet now is to start with a Clean install to eliminate that as your problem first.

To make sure, Do what I do for a Fresh Install with no old files lurking around:

Delete the old Patched build completely.....

    After you un-install/remove UG:G content/game...

    Than Delete these 2 UG:G folder/Leftovers, prior to re-downloading.

First...Delete the UG:G Folder in Steam,

Than Delete the UG:G folder located in here(Saved Games/Options)....

    C:\Users\*User Name*\AppData\LocalLow\Game Labs

Than I run CCleaner(optional) to get the junk left over in the register...~5-7 reg entries...

  15. Hi,

Where exactly can we try the beta ? Do we need a special authorization to access the "closed forum" ?

    Thanks,

    ps: great game Darth !

Yes you need to be a Tester to get into the closed Forum.

Testing Beta builds/Patches before they go public, give feed back  etc..

If you would like to be a tester, if there still excepting.

Just send a message to Nick Thomadis, requesting to be a Tester,

    that's what I did.

  16. Mr. Watkins, you are the paying customer, for pity sake. You act like the publishers are doing you the favor of taking your money and your duty is to say only nice things and give them even more money next time. It doesn't work that way. Customers have paid their money for a stake in this debate. They have an investment to protect. BTW, we are organizing a search party to help you find your backbone. We start searching a the break of dawn. Do not lose hope!

Randall,  I have posted my dislikes with this game, my complaints which mirror yours to a point. I like the game, it has a lot of good potential. I can't see myself getting

my ass in a knot over disjointed battle flow(as an example), like you.

Do what I do learn to live with it, its such a small problem / non-existing with most everyone.

I am a optimist, I look at the potential this game has going forward. I enjoy playing the game (249 hrs).

Now personal attacks on Players/Posters when, and if they say things that just doesn't agree with yours.

There's a big difference with showing respect, and brown nosing, where mine is the former.

Seems like you have agenda since you showed up here. Find problems with and not limited to

(Game / Game Play / Developers, and their decisions going forward. / People that like n enjoy the game(regardless of its short comings.)

Verbal hissing / insulting me(trying to make me look like a 0.10 cent fool) because I enjoy this game n have respect for the Developers.

We? who is this we? Search Party for a Backbone?

Trying to add weight to you post by adding the 'We'?

An ass kisser I am not. I give credit where credit is due. I respect the Developers for their integrity, their willingness to listen / work with the community.

You do not realize that the Developers have put to use some good suggestions that were generated in these forums by Players.

These suggestions are now implemented to a degree into the Game.

Asking for feedback after patches, answering questions in a timely manner. Keeping us informed with upcoming patches  etc etc.

Randall you are 65 yrs old, a man that that has a impressive resume, working in the Gaming World(producing/publishing).

I would expect from your colorful past, that you would conduct yourself in a more professional manner here.

I have paid a lot more $ for a game, that was just crap, I felt that I was ripped off n Got pissed off. I seen their glaring mistakes

in game. Sure I posted my dislikes.

But what I didn't do was, go to the game's/Developers forum's than post in a way with

veiled / disrespectful comments like some do, so when read were basically rude / attacking / insulting, and Belittling.

If you have more to say to me take it to the PM,I will not get into a shit slinging contest here in the public forum.

This way you can air you dislike for me because, basically I show a optimistic favorable view towards, people / Products I like(car, pc,etc),

State my likes / Dislikes for Game's / Developers etc.in a respectable manner.

I sent you a PM earlier before I read that post^

I went as far as to complement you in that PM.

Did I make a mistake wording that PM Randall?

    I fear I have....

This thread has evolved into something resembling, a Dog chasing his tail,,,

Going nowhere, not accomplishing anything, but just hurting others,

raising peoples ire / birse to a degree........

    Good Character is best Kept,

    Than trying to Recover........

Edit..... Randall,,with ur post,, me Angry no,,Upset no,, :) My attitude is always euthymic.

My ire has never been raised here just my eye brows when reading some posts....

scatological> you are correct,,,, point taken,,,,

cloyingly deferential, yes I can see your point.

And your reference to my pretty head, thx.. I been told that all my life

    by the pretty girls,,,,, ;)

  17. snip................. The moment you start discussing our brains or dna you lose all credibility completely.

    This is unacceptable.......snip

I have to agree^ I was kind of taken aback with that sentence, when I read it.

Although I have thrown gas onto the fire, I do want my criticism to be felt as constructive,

and the Last thing I want is to down right insult the Devs/Game. I wouldn't put up with that ^...

People need to put the shoe on the other foot for moment when in discussions, and look at things from a different prospective.

The Developers with all their Hard work,, really long hours / the stress coupled with worry of the Success or Failure.

The Gamble a company takes, charting new territory with a brand new game + starting from scratch is quite the undertaking.

These crass / witless statements in posts must stop(There ignorant! n insulting!), or the Developers will stop trying to reach out to the community.

A person will stop extending his hand / reaching out to the community, for every time he does some ungrateful s.o.b. takes a shit in it!
