  1. If someone wants to brag then fine. If they are good enough then let them brag. Who cares? The problem only arises when people start calling everyone else noobs and telling people to uninstall, or drown themselves or all the other vile behavior you see on WoT. But that won't happen in this game. Do you know why? Even amongst pugs, it is a team match that requires team coordination on a micro level and so anyone worth their salt will be on TS or have a hard time finding a good group. People that have to communicate directly with someone as opposed to through a chat window will behave much better. To not do so would be to get banned from TS. Also, you will get to know a lot of people in a game like this unlike WoT where you will not know anyone 90% of the time. Relationships aren't formed in Wot or warthunder so you have people acting like tools because their is no accountability.

"But that won't happen in this game."  You've no way of knowing that.

"Even amongst pugs, it is a team match that requires team coordination on a micro level and so anyone worth their salt will be on TS or have a hard time finding a good group." In clans, yes, I imagine a lot of people will be on TS. In random encounters in the open world, like those "fleet escort" missions the devs have talked about? No, that won't be the case. They'll be using text chat, and if it is possible for people to view each others' stats, inevitably there will be people in these random encounters who start calling each other noobs and so on and so forth because of their stats.

"Also, you will get to know a lot of people in a game like this unlike WoT where you will not know anyone 90% of the time." Right now, yeah, you see the same people a lot, because the community is small and the game is small. When the game is fully released and there are tons of people who play the game? No. You'll probably be seeing random, unknown strangers a lot of the time.

  2. Beautiful, but a very saddening sight too, pity it was sunk. Anyway, does anyone know what ship the ship that we first see at 1:16 is ?

    -JRT

I remember seeing that video in another thread. I think the other ship was HMS Trincomalee's sister ship, or something like that.

Edit: No, wait, I think that was HMS Trincomalee, when she was known as Foudroyant.

  3.

We totally agree with the statements that stat grinding must be avoided and should not be part of the game.1

Having said that we must track certain things to make gameplay better. (+ tracking stats could be useful for some players). But it takes development time and less focus on stats will allow more development time elsewhere.

For me the below mentioned stats could be useful to a clan leader or fleet member and will definitely want to make this stats public.

    • Win rate as an admiral - useful to determine who will have access to commander tablet in battle
    • Quitting battles statistics - self explanatory
    • Win rate as individual - very usefull 2
    • % of ships destroyed or captured above the class of your vessel - very useful 3
    • Friendly fire as a % of total damage
    • Escort participation
    • Orders fulfilled % or similar

What the hell? Points 2 and 3 are actually contradictory to point 1. You say "stat grinding must be avoided," and then you suggest adding winrate (one of the most heavily-ground stats in WoT, for example, and one that players love to use to insult each other) and a kill counter (which encourages kill-stealing and the like, and is also a very grindable stat). Not only that, but you say that these should be made public. I... I just... what? -_-

  4. Le Sans Pareil.

General plans by Sané, 80-gun of the second part. 1787-1800.

    1790-1794 for the French Navy.

    182' 6"; 47'; 23' 6"

    1st deck gun : 30-gun of 36 -pdr

    2nd deck gun : 32-gun of 24-pdr

    Forecastle : 18-gun of 12-pdr and 6 howitzer of 36-pdr

    total : 86-gun.

Out of curiosity, how effective were those howitzers, compared to standard cannons or carronades of the same caliber? I barely know anything about the howitzers of that time; they seem to me like an odd choice of weapon in this case. What was it about them that made them preferable, in this instance, to just carrying 6 more cannons or carronades?

  5. I think we have another one in the timeframe : the 90 guns Suffren class designed in 1824. Then we had the 100 guns Hercule class, some of the biggest two decker ever built.

    *Wikipedia search*

The Suffren-class ships look like three-deckers to me, judging by this model...

    1280px-Suffren_mg_9446.jpg

And the Hercule-class ships were kinda late for this game, as far as I know. (Sorry for probably bringing up the timeline debate again, but 1836 sounds a bit late for this game, from what I've read on here.)

Besides, they both have that late flush-deck design, which I find pretty ugly. :P

  6. Its nice but i would really want to see temeraire class first

We already have a 74 ship of the line.

I think 3rd Rates are my favorite types of SoLs, so the more of them, the better, IMO. :P

    I'd especially like to see a Tonnant-class and/or a Bucentaure-class ship in-game, just because they're the most heavily armed (number of guns-wise) two-deckers that I know of.

  7. Some of those, like the fishing ships, merchants, and troop transports, would be good for clans/guilds to have. They'd need an armed escort (to keep from getting blown clear out of the water) which could be provided by other clan members, and their missions (fishing, trading, transporting troops) could help the clan gain money or standing.

  8. For personal glory (although some awards could be for societies or the specific ship you sailed instead) we should instead have an award system with some typical medals, decorated swords, titles and whatsoever, historically accurate or not.

The requirements for any of the awards should be kept hidden to everyone all the time, even after receiving them, so that noone can really grind for them on purpose, although some of them may have rather obvious requirements. Receiving the awards should be delayed until porting, until porting at a port of specific criteria, or until being in contact with the necessary authorities in any way, to ensure that figuring out the exact game statistical requirements of the award will be very hard or hopefully impossible for players to figure out. For an example, you "receive" an award at moment X but for whatever reason you don't happen to visit your nation's port for a week in real time and upon your next visit you are awarded for whatever you have done. The award descriptions should contain big words of praise, mentions of specific battles or events but no too accurate details about how you obtained it.

There should be awards for almost all roles and activites in the game, but apart from a small number of basic ones the most of them should only be acquirable through very special events and grand successes in whatever is being done. So by making these awards rather difficult to obtain and keeping the requirements hidden from the players it would be ensured that they are something people obtain simply by playing and living in the open world rather than going through a meta grind. The greater awards should automaticly end up being awarded to the people who really deserve them because they really have been succesful enough to receive them. By making all the awards a meaningful proof of experience like this and with noble titles and stuff like that as the highest awards this system could give us the more truthfully accurate version of a leaderboard that lets your fellows know who really are the best, the most experienced and the most respected.

an award for receiving a quick promotion after an outstanding battle, (you weren't promoted just because you've been in steady business for X amount of time)
an award for the merchant(s) who achieved a grand economic victory for their nation,
an award for that captain of the brig that just happened to be around at the right time to save something important from sinking

an award for a grand discovery of a flightless bird and a giant tortoise

    etc. etc.
I shouldn't be the one coming up with them and/or I shouldn't be the one allowed to come up with them so these are just a few simple examples.

Everyone is allowed to further this idea more, or make a thread about it if I actually went too badly offtopic here (and hopefully I haven't missed an already existing thread about such awards).

That sounds excellent. And it covers a lot of the potential hurdles, too: historical accuracy is dealt with by offering historical/semi-historical awards; stat-grinding is largely dealt with by the unknown requirements; and the '"FU noob"' mentality might also be dealt with, because winning those awards would be a result of luck, daring, and personal playstyle than raw statistics.

And you should create a separate thread for this; it deserves more attention, IMO.

  9. I like the abstract Reputation / Infamy counter type. A simple way that reflects the captain importance to the game world.

    Other than that ?

    - amount of time played

    - trade net worth

    - prize net worth

Competitive statistics ? No thanks. I am all about achievements, not bragging-meters.

Now this is a very good idea. Simple and effective, with no room for the crappy player mentalities that can come about as a result of competitive statistics. Have my +1.

  10. I agree with Laik and Brigand. We don't need players having the "you have a X stat of less than Y; FU noob" attitude. If the devs want to add a whole bunch of stats, that's fine to me (although I find a lot of them to be pretty pointless, myself), but make them private. The only people who I think maybe should be able to view another person's stats should be clan/guild leaders and recruiters, since the competitive clans will want to recruit the statistically best players available.

Also, about global leaderboards, which some games seem to like to implement: Forget 'em, IMO. The only use I can think of for them would be boards to show like the 15 players with the highest bounties on their heads that have been recently spotted around whatever port or island or area of land that you're docked at. Otherwise, they seem like a pointless waste of time and UI, if you ask me.

  11. Could one actually get on those balcony levels at the stern? Look like doors on either side to me. Imagine sitting on the stern balcony of a massive lineship like that :D Put some chairs on it, enjoy the summer evenings.

    SDC11194.jpg

Looks like a pretty place to woo a lady, if you ask me. Standing together on a balcony of a big ship like that, looking across the water, et cetera... :P

  12. The best in-general historical movie I've seen that I can think of right now (I watch a lot of movies and shows, so I've probably forgotten something good) is Apollo 13, which is downright excellent, IMO.

The best historical movie/show set in the Age of Sail era that I've seen is the Hornblower TV series with Ioan Gruffudd. I've been watching those episodes on YouTube lately and falling in love with them again, having not seen them in quite a while until recently.

  13. Indeed, a Tonnant class ship of the line with 86 guns should be the perfect fit between the 74 bellona and a 98 guns second rate (which is also needed).

I thought The Tonnant-class and Bucentaure-class ships had 80 guns?
