Because ppl were exploiting it, hiding in backwaters or behind small islands and scoping the passerby, and even worse they had friends hiding out in battles telling them to escape the battle in time to join against gankees. I liked it to view ports off in the distance and knowing where i was without having to sail close to it, but now we dont need that with the coords and grid.
