  1. Would you be needing any Privateers then Lads?

I be thinking not well on joining the Navy lads, for I be not the kind as takes orders, nor bows and scrapes...  But a Privateer needs a Letter of Marque from someone; else there's some as go around calling em' "Pirates" and wanting to stretch their necks like.  I prefer me neck at it's present length...  So if a share of me gold for a scrap of paper from you Decatur boys keeps me head out of the hemp, and me ship in the trim; then that be a fair Accord says I.  What says you?   B)

    In modern English:

I'm not sure if I want to be a Navy player or a Privateer, as I'm still unsure how the progression in the game will work.  I would still like to have some cool people to play the game with though...  do you have an "Associate" member category, or something?  :)

  2. Welcome Billy and Hethwill!

I'd be happy to give you some helpful hints Billy.  If you see me in the Lobby, feel free to ask for help.  You can probably ask most people for a "learning Duel" so you can go one on one.

  3. Was it also possible that the range between you and your target was changing?  I've had a similar thing happen when the range increased slightly while I was waiting for my ranging shot to fall.

This...  I find this is the reason that I miss shots that hit on the single range shot, but the broadside misses.

I'll fire a ranging shot, and unbeknownst to me our ships are sailing at an angle which is either opening, or closing the range... so the ranging shot hits... then the broadside misses.

I don't really have any problem with this... I just need to be a better shot!  ;)

  4. This is easy guys, when the Open World, and Ship Customization come out...  Just buy a Constitution "class" Frigate, paint her in French colors... and Bingo!  Acheron.  Plenty of ships built in the US were used by Britain and France, amongst others.

In the Novel "Far Side of the World" Cpt. Aubrey and the Surprise are actually after the American Frigate USS Essex during the War of 1812.  Since the filmmakers were fairly sure they were only going to make 1 movie from the series, they wanted the "bad guys" to be French- to better represent the era of the Novels.  Or that's what I seem to remember from the "Making of" documentary on the DVD.

  5. I wouldn't be averse to giving them a buff to allow them into the game. They don't have to be outclassed just because they are older. Otherwise no one will sail anything from before 1800.

They don't really need a buff in stats, otherwise there's no "reason" to buy a newer ship.  How about the older ships are Cheaper, and easier to replace?

Remember, in the future, losing a ship is going to hurt.  ;)

  6. absolutely!  Good idea, that said-  I understand why they are in the game now (even I have fired on a friendly by accident, because they were driving the same ship as the guy that just shot me- and I didn't take the time to properly check)

I would advise to wait until ship customization comes out though, then there will be much more in the way a visual clues (besides the Ensign) to tell friend from foe.  For example: I'm pretty sure most people playing as the British will have their ships wearing the "Nelson Chequer", most playing as US will be black, with white gun strakes (that's how I plan to have mine)- and so on for the different nations...  because that's how we as players imagine the ships looking.  There will probably also be many people who paint their ships in "unconventional" ways...  I'm looking at you Pirates!  :)

I think that would make the in game "need" for having names above players a lot less.

  7. Argh!  Welcome aboard me hearty!  But mark ye, there be no place to hide betwixt the wind and water...  So may you have calm Seas, fair winds, and a fully loaded broadside!  :D

Welcome to the game.  The Pay-Pal issues should be resolved fairly soon, just keep checking in on the forums.  I think the game will actually be up on Steam soon, so it's only a matter of time before your sailing along, trading shots with the rest of us!  B)

  8. we are thinking about a crowdfunded US ship pack

    Has anything happened with this???

If I can have some more beautiful American Ships... PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY!  :D

Seriously though, I know I'm not the only one who would pay $5-10 for an American Ship Pack.  Maybe it could be like a Pre-order DLC?

  9. A Beauty!  I wouldn't mind a nice trim French girl in the game.   ;)

I'm afraid it might not make the cutoff though, as far as I'm aware no ships built after 1820 are going to be in the game.  So this one being from 1823 might be pushing it.  Or I could be wrong about the cutoff date.

    Either way... a beautiful ship.

  10. Sloops of War occupy the strange territory between smaller ships, like Brigs, and larger ships like Corvettes and Frigates.  Sloops were used by many nations during the age of sail, including- the United States, France, and Great Britain.  A Sloop was often the first posting for a young Commander, or newly minted Post Captain.  Since we seem to have a gap in medium to light ships, I though these ships would fill in the gap nicely.

Perhaps the 2 most famous sailing Sloops built by the United States were Wasp and Hornet.  Hornet was completed first as a Brig, but her sailing qualities left a lot to be desired, so changes were made to the design of her sister ship Wasp.  Based on the alterations done on the Wasp, both ships were re-rigged "Ship" style with 3 masts in 1811.

Both ships saw action in the War of 1812.  USS Wasp captured HMS Frolic, but was then Captured herself by HMS Poictiers (74 Guns) and bought into British service as HMS Loup Cervier (later Peacock)

Hornet had much more success during the war, capturing 3 British Warships, and several Merchants.

Both ships were later lost in Storms.

The Ship available in the Game could be either the Wasp or the Hornet, though for historical reasons it should probably be the Hornet, as she was the most successful.  But I do have a personal reason for wanting it to be the Wasp, I had family members on the USS Wasp (CV-6) lost during WW2.

Some of these pictures are of Wasp, or Hornet, but both ships were identical in design and rigging.

    USS Hornet:

    440 Tons

    Length: 106'9" (32.5 Meters)

    Beam: 31'5" (9.6 Meters)

    Draft: 14' (4.3 Meters)

Armament: eighteen 32 Pound Carronades; two 12 Pound Chasers

    h86236.jpg

Note: The rigging in this picture is accurate, but not to scale with the rest of the ship.  Also note the Schooner USS Grampus below the Hornet, and the flags hung upside down, as a signal of distress.

  11. Right before battles everything not related to combat was dumped overboard, that included boats.

Yes... As far as I'm aware the practice was to launch the boats, and then tow them some distance behind the ship during battle.  Occasionally if the ship had larger boats, or lots of them; they would not be towed, but a small party would be detached from the crew to keep the boats safe until the ship came back.

I agree with Dest that this would be really cool to see in the game at some point, if only as a legitimate concern for Captains.  You need the boats to go back and forth to port, load supplies, land troops etc... but they are a big nuisance when not in use and stored on the deck of a ship.

But I also agree with the Admin that this is a minor thing, and given the current progress on the game, it would be a distraction I think.  That said... I definitely think it would be worth revisiting in the future, when the game is further along.

  12. I'm 30, which I think is the perfect age...

I'm old enough to be taken seriously by the "Adult" world, young enough to still kick ass, and good looking enough to leave the Ladies walking bow-legged...  B)

  13. Anyone ever played Rise of Flight? They had historical signaling  and stuff, but allthough it looked cool I never saw anyone use it. Most people used teamspeak or the ingame chat so alot of devs effort went into this useless gimmick.... Maybe 0,001% of the communety used these signals and flew close enough formation to actually see the hand signals. Waste of resources that could have been used on something else.

I understand what you mean Kaboki... but I think seeing hand signals from the cockpit of a bi-plane, and reading signal flags flying from a ship, are a bit different.

I think no one uses the hand signals in RoF because they are just too damn hard to see!   :)

Signal flags are much easier to see.  All you have to do is literally look at a ship, and you can see if it has signals flying or not.

I also agree with you that many people will be using Teamspeak (or some other comms program), but what do you do if some people on your team are not in your teamspeak?  Or maybe they don't speak the same language as you, so voice comms would be pointless anyway!

When the open world comes out, what are you going to do if your sailing a Fat Merchie and want an escort?  Type in chat?  But if your sitting in port, flying the signal "Hey I need an escort" then any other players in the same port will be able to see it.

I understand there will are ways to do this kind of thing just in the Chat... but my problem with that is... I'm not a good typist!  I know it doesn't seem that way from my post's... but that's just Spellchecker helping me out...  :D

I think Signal flags would be a cool addition to the game, but I admit you could be right Kaboki, and it could just be a lot of effort for something that players won't use.  I'd use them... but maybe I'm just weird...

  14. I think it's a great Idea about signal flags!

Seems to be the best method of basic communication, especially for people who don't speak the same language.  This is going to have to be dealt with eventually, because when the game does release (and especially if it becomes popular- like I think it will) then there are going to be people who don't speak English playing.  There are already many people playing who only speak English as a second language; RamJB being a notable example.  We are going to need a simple and easy way to talk to each other.

Maybe they could work like the button press comms in War Thunder or WoT... perhaps something like this:

You want to send the Signal : "Turn left, and Attack"

You hit a button which brings up a small menu, just like loading different ammo types now.  This menu can be as simple or complex as wanted/needed.  It could be as simple as having 5-6 predefined commands (such as; Help, Attack my target, Tack around, Form up, etc).  To being a full signal system, allowing players to pick flags, and send custom messages as they like.  (that would be realistic and cool, but I'm not sure how useful it would be :P )

You Pick the Signal that you like and send it.  Here is another splitting point between realism, and game-ness.  Once a player sends a signal, it could just pop up on their screen- ala WoT.   Or...  When you send a signal, the other ships on your team get a prompt; something like "Signal from the Flag Sir"  or "Ship Signaling sir!"  and they have to actually look at your ship in their spyglass, and look at the flags your flying.  Then the message you've sent can pop up as a subtitle, or other text on the screen; since we don't wan't to force players to memorize the flags like real sailors.

Just my thoughts on what might be cool, or useful.   B)

  15. oh and you will never guess who captained hms America... I shit you not. James Kirk.

    These are the Voyages....  :D

    tng-cast-generations.jpg

Yeah, I know it's not Kirk.... but still... I guess that's always been one of my favorite things about Star Trek, it would work as a show, if the Enterprise was a Starship, or a Sailing Frigate...

Anyway, now that I've High-Jacked the thread for my Nerdiness... continue with your posts everyone.. :)

And more on-topic...  I think you have something there Destraex, about the "play Style" of the US ships.  I was thinking in terms of big Trafalgar type battles, but as others have said... we still don't know how Nation Vs. Nation fights are going to happen.  It could be interesting to leave the US fleet historically accurate...  I'll have to think about it some more...  ;)

  16. Or the HMS America ;)

I am pretty much against putting a ship in game that all the Americans will tend to use as their own SOL of which they had none by choice.

There are literally hundreds of other 74s more relavant and we already have one in game (Bellona).

I would prefer a lower rate ship of the line like a 50 or 64 as we are getting a 2nd rate already.

P.S. Why would 18pdr guns have more range than larger ones, is this because they were long?? Normal 74s can mount these.

I forgot there was an HMS America lol!  I think it was even based on the French designed America... which was based on the American built one... (I think- sailing ships are confusing :P )  Yes, I was thinking of the Long guns... but as you say, most ships could mount those.   ^_^ It's late where I am. :)

And I understand why you would feel that way, your right that the US never really had any SOL's, some were started during the War of 1812, but they weren't finished until many years later, the "America" did at least get built, and saw action.  I guess I made it mostly as a suggestion for later, when the Open World comes out.

I know it's been suggested that if the US has the same types of ships as the other Nations, that when the Open World comes out, that's all we'll see.  On the opposite side of that view, I'm afraid that if the heaviest US ship is a Frigate, that when the Open World does come out, you won't see many US ship's at all; everyone well be going for the Victory or Santisima, the "best" ships (I think that will eventually happen no matter what, given the nature of online games).

I thought the "America" was a good compromise between those points of view.  It would give the Americans 1 type of heavy warship, while still leaving them inferior to the British, French etc.

I suppose I'm just thinking about it from a game-play perspective.  From a purely Historic standpoint, your right... the US should not get any Ships of the Line.  But I can dream can't I???  :D  I admit, I'm an American... so I might be a little biased...

  17. Well, after seeing the Bon Homme Richard, and that Dutch ship, I'm almost tempted not to post anything, and hope one of those makes it in... but since I just posted earlier on a thread about possible American Ships of the Line, I had the research already at hand...  B)

USS (later French) America- 74 guns.  The first Ship of the Line built in the United States- commissioned in 1784, and the only one built during the Revolutionary War.  She was given to France by the US as a gift to replace the French ship Magnifique, lost in Boston Harbor.  Not to be confused with the later French ship America, (built as a replacement) which was of the Temeraire class.

    USS America 74 Guns- 626 Souls;

    20 Long 18 Pounders

    32 Long 12 Pounders

    12 Long 9 Pounders

    Length: 182'6" (U.S. Feet)

    Beam: 50'6"

    Depth of Hold: 23'

    Displacement: 1,982 US Tons.

    Laid Down in May, 1777

    Commissioned 5 November, 1782.

    solamerica2.JPG

This is the best picture I could find of the completed ship.

    solamerica1.JPG

This is the Drought plan of the ship.

    solamericasailplan.JPG

    This is the Sail Plan.

Special thanks to this Website- http://www.battlecruisers.org/solamerica.html

As launched, she was armed with a battery of 18 pound guns, while most other comparable British and French ships had 20-30 pound main batteries.  She would not have the "punch" of other warships her size up close, but would have a faster firing rate, and longer range.  More than a match for anything smaller than a 3rd Rate, but not really able to handle anything heavier.  It comes pre-balanced for the game...  :D

  18. Thanks for sharing those model pics Al, that's a neat and interesting little bit of history that I'm glad someone has preserved! It's also cool that your sharing it with the Navy, instead of keeping it in storage, or on a shelf where no one knows it exists.  Are they taking measurements so other models can be made (for Museums and so forth)?

On the subject at hand... Once the open world comes out... I do think it would be a little unfair to limit the players who want to play as the US to only Frigates.  Previous posters have brought up valid points about there never being many US SOL's in real life (even later, after the Napoleonic period), and about being afraid that when the open world does come, there are going to be nothing but American ships, unless the other countries have distinct advantages over them (as in History).  I can sympathize with this view, as I'm kind of afraid there will be nothing but British ships...  :) However, if the US doesn't have anything heavier than a Frigate, I don't think many people would play them at all (I would, but I'm planning on playing as the US regardless- I like the ships paint scheme better  :D ).  They would be like the Japanese in War Thunder...  They have fewer types of aircraft etc. available than the other Nations, and as a result get played less.  Is it Historically Accurate?  Yes.  Is it fun?  No.

I would like playing as the US to be a viable option from the stand point of game-play, but I do agree that the other Nations should have an advantage over the US to better represent the actual balance of Naval power at the time.  How about a compromise?

Let's say that the heaviest ship the US has access to is a 3rd Rate 74- a two-decker.  Like say the "America", built in Boston as a 74, and given to France in 1784.  I don't know if blueprints are available for that particular ship, but there are others that could be used.  Joshua Humphrey's made a design for a US 74, as mentioned in a earlier post.  It would be a "paper" ship, but at least it would give US players the chance to compete with the other nations at higher levels, while still giving the other Nations and advantage.

That's just my two cents anyway...  Have a nice day all!  B)
