  1. this isn't about you.  Its about play styles and game mechanics you may have chosen to use and therefore are an example that can be pointed to.  But it really has nothing to do with you specifically or your clan.

    ^ This.

  2. I understand the desire to avoiding having to sail for hours and hours on end just to do a trade route.

But as mentioned above, the current teleport system is very detrimental to OW PVP / privateering having any higher purpose at all beyond "sheer bloody-mindedness". Especially, the teleporting makes OW PVP / privateering pointless in a RvR sense, which is a shame and detrimental to the game.

So I propose: implement an autopilot feature in lieu of the teleport system for ships. Your pick the port you want your ship to sail to, and it will sail there as an NPC, taking a predictable amount of time.

This makes the ship subject to interdiction, and thereby opens up a whole host of really important and really cool features for RvR and other play styles beyond the port battle paradigm.

And it saves traders from having to slog around, if they don't enjoy that.

  3. I would rather see an "autopilot" for your trade ship (or whatever) that would sail it along a preset course of your choosing to your capital, essentially as an NPC, rather than having *any* teleports.

This would allow you to take out a different ship to do PVP, craft, whatever you wanted to do besides the apparently boring task of sailing one's goods from port to capitol.

I understand that this would expose those goods to capture, and that's entirely the point of the suggestion.

The reason is that this game needs something more to do on an RvR level than the current "Power Level so you can Port Battle in a SOL" meta which is currently too dominant in the game, to the detriment of other play styles.

For pirating and privateering to matter in a RvR sense, there needs to be an economic warfare angle possible, and currently due to the abused teleport mechanic, there really isn't.

I get that people want action and that's fine - if traders were required to sail in the OW, there would be TONS of action available, for even Midshipmen to take part in, and it would matter - a lot! - in a RvR sense.

Currently newbies are forced to PVE powerlevel up to at least a Frigate before they feel like they're really taking part in the game, and that's silly. They should be primarily hunting player traders - or protecting them! - while doing this, it would give actual meaning to their activities for the entire server, and more fun for everyone as a consequence.

  4. I too can highly recommend the US eastern seaboard this time of year!

Been operating on PVP2 between Cabo Canaveral and Georgetown in my trusty Privateer flying the Union Jack, and having just a lovely time. None of those "empty seas" you sometimes experience in other regions, these shores are chock-full of NPC and player characters, including more than a few player traders who are always fun to try and catch out between the closely space ports. You've definitely got to keep a weather eye at all times because there are gankers a-plenty, too, but that really just adds to the fun. Great way to experience Naval Action as a solo player IMHO.

  5. Shhh.. it's a secret.

Hint: Check log files, the clue is in there.  :D

So, I spent some quality time with the log files last night and missed it. Would love to know more about how you've set this up, from a technical standpoint. It's very cool.

Suggestions that might be interesting if feasible:

    - Current server populations

    - Number of players in each faction currently logged in

No idea if that's possible, but I did see one spot in one log file where a bunch of usernames were listed, so maybe?

  6. Maybe they should just stop trying to break the game to minimize exploits and instead just ban exploiters.

I get your sentiment, but the truth is that the devs don't want to spend their time and energy that way. They'd rather design mechanics that forestall those kinds of occurrences (needing to ban people) as much as possible.

There's already a BR ratio limiter in place that prevents me from attacking a 3rd rate in my Cutter. Some sort of way of awarding extra gold and XP to the person getting ganked, based on the BR ratio of the "victim" vs the "gankers" might not be a bad idea.

The theory being that even if you lose a durability on your ship during the gank, you have a fun fight and are richly rewarded for all the damage that you do manage to inflict as the "victim". The "aggressors" will still get something for their efforts in addition to the destruction of the ship they fight.

  7. Of course, if you want to experience single durability gameplay, it's possible right now without changing anything.

For my part, I only sail captured ships, so "it's all on the line" for me everytime I leave port. I spend time building up a supply of additional ships by raiding NPC fleets, or trying to get them from player characters when possible.

It can be devastating to lose one of the "not so bad" ships (i.e. a Common one that might have 3 regular upgrade spots... I know, right?). But that's OK, you can get another with a bit more time and effort.

With outpost capacity being what it is, this means I have to work much harder for the equivalent of 5 durabilities, and each of those ships will have different capabilities and each require their own, often redundant upgrades. It's basically the least efficient and low-powered way to play the game, but I don't mind because: IT'S FUN! :)

  8. If I could I would use my privateer as target practice for my Snow. <_<

LOL fair enough. But for my part, I'm living dangerously deep behind enemy lines with a provocative username and a penchant for harassing player traders and jumping in on other people's admiralty missions. I can't think of a better ship for the task than the Privateer... it's small enough that the big baddies won't try too hard to kill you, big enough that the Basic Cutters will think twice, and fast enough to outrun anyone who feels differently :D

  9. Is there a thread for remembering boats and ships that you loved, but which have been lost to the vagaries of time and high seas adventure?

    I'll start:

R.I.P., not-so-bad Privateer. I captured you from an AI fleet and we had a lot of fun together. I knew with your single durability you wouldn't be with me forever, but it's still hard to say goodbye. You had some pretty sweet upgrades and were kinda fast. We had a grand time hunting player traders deep behind enemy lines, and we almost got that last one! And running away from gankers in frigates at 13.4kts closehauled was great fun. I wish that last stupid AI Privateer we were trying to capture hadn't made the both of you flip. That sucked. You will be missed.

  10. I "helped" a guy go Pirate on PVP2 last night. He declared an attack, then in the battle instance confirmed he just wanted to go Pirate and didn't want to fight. I was just in a Cutter and would've been happy to let him sink me for the cause. Go Pirates Go!

  11. I would love to see additional ships, or even just additional ship skins / repaints.

One idea: for a small fee, you can give your ship its own name which could show up in the OW and in battle instances in the player name & ship area, i.e.

    First Lieutenant Surfimp

    Privateer Izabella

This name would stay with the ship through all its durabilities and could be changed, again for a small fee.

Ideally it would also show up on the transom unless that was too difficult... :)

  12. I would like to see the OW use the same camera control as the battle instances. I.e. I shouldn't have to right click and drag in OW to move my camera around my ship, whereas in battle I can just move the mouse.

Also I think the spyglass in OW is absolutely essential, and I'd like to see it implemented along with removing the ability to click on distant ships and have all the information about the ship / fleet displayed.

Instead, I would like that national flags be displayed in the OW (currently they are not) and you'd have to use your spyglass to identify ship type and nationality... and you'd only get the captain's name once you were at hailing distance. This would really add quite a bit to the drama and tension of seeing other ships - are they friend or foe? - and would be much more realistic and interesting.

Trade ships look ridiculous sailing around with the gunports open and no guns on deck. At least they should have the gunports closed, for sure.

I don't think the spyglass should be something that has to be earned, it would be a basic piece of essential navigation equipment for ships of this time.

  13. Very much this. It will simply cause confusion to use the same term for yet another thing, and would be a terrible decision from a design and accessibility point of view. Unfortunately the votes in this thread feel like a typical case of "Don't listen to the voters because they don't know what's best for them."

It would be easy to re-name the current ad hoc groups of NPC or player ships that you refer to as "Squadrons", which would be much more historically accurate for a group of 2-8 ships than the current usage of Fleet.

Then the word "Fleet" could - quite appropriately - replace the word "clan" to refer to the much larger groups of players who don't always "squadron up" but are part of the same permanent group and nation.

Done and done. The game is still in EA and I don't think any of the current player base would need more than a week to adjust, and probably less.

  14. We have no preference to this and will change it if the community decides they do not like the word clan

My personal opinion: Clan is completely unthematic and, as an American, has always had very uncomfortable connotations to our very unfortunate history of racial discrimination and a specific group of terrorists who attempted to enforce racial prejudice through violence and coercion.

So, anything but clan would be better, especially something that was actually naval.

    I voted for Fleet.

  15. I previously asked the same question as the two posters above and then thought better of it.

But now, having 2nd Lt. in my sights and quite a few more battles vs small ships (my Cutter vs enemy Cutters and Lynxes), I have been finding:

    1) For Admiralty Missions, it's more helpful - against armed AI opponents - to go for their stern armor and rudder first, then - if I want to board them - work the sails a bit with chain before proceeding to grapeshot stern rakes to whittle down the enemy crew. If I just want to get them to surrender to get the Gold & XP for completing the mission, I keep hammering them with ball.

    2) Against traders (Trader Brig and Trader Lynx) I capture in the Open World, I find I need to make sure to approach as close as possible while maintaining a downwind position in the Open World, so that when the battle instance loads I will be downwind and able to catch them. I use chain to bring the sails down ASAP so that they can't run away, then use ball to reduce the stern armor and rudder, then grape to kill the crew.

In both cases above, once I get to grape, I keep graping till the enemy crew is down to 10-15 or so (and I hopefully still have 35+). This makes the boarding take even less time, and if the enemy's sails and rudder are gone, you can pretty easily grape stern rake all day if you want. Make sure to remember to do the "prepare for boarding" action before you try to board!

Once it's time to board, I get to the downwind side of the enemy ship and then slowly round them up into the wind - the AI will usually try to avoid collisions. Once speed gets below 5kts and both ships are pretty even matched (neither is accelerating / decelerating relative to the other) the boarding [G] will usually show up.
