Side point.  I’m not familiar with Lloyd’s ever insuring a Royal Navy vessel, however...  I may be wrong, but I don’t think so.

Kind of immaterial to game play, but just kinda making discussion. 🙂

my point was not really even lloyds insuring the royal navy ... just that all insurance started with the insuring of ships ...a trader would more than likely be insured by lloyds .. if you want to get picky the royal navy didnt require its captains in this period to finance the building of their own ships as we do in game ... however before you get picky again .. many captains used their own money improve their ships and buy extra stores gunpowder over and above that issued

I think this is not historical, but this is a small thing with pros.

your joking right .... the whole idea of insurance was built upon people betting on whether a ship would complete its journey .. in lloyds coffee house

this became known as insurance where a ship owner would bet against his ship making it home ,, therefore if he lost his ship and cargo he would still get cash ... hence lloyds of london was born

its no different tp car insurance where the premium is in effect you betting through your monthly premium that your car will be damaged or stolen ... the insurers bet is that it wont they win they get to keep your premium

  3. id actually just settle for pre set  historical ship names  .. i have 3 bellonas  different builds and mods would like to be able to identify which is which by name ...

each nation in game must have had at least 100 ships in service over time period game is set  would it be hard to give us a choice of 100 ship names to choose from depending which nation the ship is crafted in ..

the name doesnt even have to fit the ships class/rate .. ie you build a suprise theres no problem  calling it HMS Victory

Boom! Right here! There should be ZERO debate on this topic. Having a way to deduce your location IN GAME WITHOUT USING THE BLOODY TRADERS TOOL is a realistic and period correct game mechanic.

Eye balling your location using fish meat via the trader tool is a stupid, metagamey "wallhack" for lack of a better term. In fact, I vote for the complete removal of the trader tool outside of ports, and the removal of distances to ports completely, as its extremely unrealistic.

i agree .... but lets not replace it with a ..."you are here"  icon

You are the type of person that is hurting this game. You want everything super complicated with a very steep learning curve (more like a giant wall tbh), that serves no purpose than to scare away new potential players. And for what exactly? What possible reason could you have to NOT want something as basic as a god damned bloody location mark on a map?

ffs people, this topic should not even be a point of such heated discussion! Map markers are BASIC GAME FUNCTIONALITY. We have a massive bloody game world. Making it needlessly difficult to get around is completely counter productive to what this type of game needs. NEW PLAYERS.

on the other hand maybe its you that hurts the game ,,, taking what limited content is out of the game .... maybe some players get a sense of achievement out of navigating without having their hand held ... its not overly complicated ,, its not hard

where is the achievement in sailing from one port to another knowing your  position at all times ?

your the only one get over heated and stamping your feet

Here, I've made an example of the type of mark we could have in the game for navigation. Map is at max zoom in this picture.

    qKHLnHd.jpg

Have the mark update its position every 30 seconds to 45 seconds or so. Just a simple circle with a rough location. Thats it. No coordinates, no lat/long, no metagamey trader tool trickery, no super complicated mess of different tools to mess with. Just a simple, clean, hand drawn looking circle of a rough location for players to use as a reference point when traveling.

    Thats ALL that is needed.

    why

Do you want an automatic fire button that shoots a broadside at the right moment too .... do you think manual sailig is too meta

leave us something in the game ,, please  dont try and fix soething thats not broken ,, the way we navigate around is fine

Its very VERY metagamey. If I were a new player or a casual, I most likely wouldn't even know that was possible (or even know that tool exists for that matter). Which was the point I was trying to make.

Stop using this reason as an excuse. Its growing old.

you said you were lost just trying to help

a new player only has to ask .. how do you navigate ,, to get the answer

I'm going to use an example of my current situation to make a point.

As of typing this, I'm sailing in a LGV just north of the Bahamas. I'm trying to get to Ays, but I cant go through the Bahamas because obviously the LGV cant go through the shallow water there. My issue atm, is that I can see islands... but I have no clue WHAT islands they are. I know I should be passing a port very soon, but A: I dont know how long it'll take to get there, and B: theres a chance I may not even be able to SEE said port from my current position, which would make it very hard to actually figure out where the heck I am. This is creating a situation where navigating around this area is becoming very frustrating, tiresome, and annoying. Hell, I cant even place custom waypoints or marks on my map to plan out a route to take!

I were a new player or a casual, I'd most likely be extremely frustrated because I have no idea where I am or where I need to go. So much so, I'd most likely just alt-F4 and go play something else instead. Preferably a game that has a decent navigation system that isn't metagamey.

This is a problem. One that is a super easy to fix by adding a simple mark on the map for players to see roughly where they are in the world. It doesn't have to be super complicated or pin-point accurate or even updated every other millisecond. Just give us a 1km sized circle on the map that updates every 30 seconds, to give us an idea of where we are. Then, allow players to write and draw on our maps and create waypoints to plan out custom routes.

Its basic game design. It shouldn't be this bloody hard.

type fishmeat into traders tool .. look at two nearest ports ,,, look on your map... make a rough mental triangulation,,,, thats where you are  ... its not hard

  9.  i suggest for more content  that due to undrground earthquake or volcanic activity ,,,, small new islands appear .... they are not marked on map but reports appear similar to sunken fleet reports of a general area .. these islands can not be taken by a nation ,,, and you cannot open an outpost ,, but anyone can place a contract.. reason being thses islands have a variety of resources that are valuable in game such as copper, gold . cartegena tar  etc .. after a period of time the island sinks back into the sea

benefits are players can access rare resources for a limited time .. as there is no outpost avaialbe just an anchorage ,so no tow or tp ,, if you want to set up a contract or redeem it you have to sail there ... there maybe some players who feel that taking the resources off others is a more profitable exercise .. therefore to protect your ship and resources you may want to sail with other playesr escorting you therefore more pvp.

also to stop players putting up large contracts at large prices ... when the island sinks .. if you have a contract awaiting to be filled in place that contract and the money sinks with the island ... some islands will stay for a wek or two some just a day or two

You can turn your map off if that is the game you want to play but for the rest of no thank you.

Honestly grids needs to come back to OW map and rough lad/long (drop F11 cords.). I should be tell some one to meet me roughly at these cords and in game not using 3rd party software find me.

we were talking about the map in port battles not ow

There's plenty of invasion ( rvr ) fleets that got caught in gales and heavy weather at the end of the journey.

If 2 are not enough we can go through and find enough.

Again my concerns are several, albeit voting Yes.

    1. Transition from OW to PB must be credible.

    2. if fps decay is no concern

    3. fog of war in minimap

Two of those must exist for the idea to be interesting enough.

i actually like option 3 ... in fact do away with the  map altogether in pb

Then devs should implement visual clue on map or in OW too indicate there is a storm where the port battle is too take place. Attackers will then choose cancel the port battle or attack in storm.

Im for the storms but i want them in OW as well but not just visual ones, but dangerous ones that can capsize your ship or break your mast

its hard enough to get people to pvp and rvr ,, as it is lets give people more reasons not to do either

  13. i voted no .. its supposed to be historical and realistic ... 17th century dships would not have fought a large engagement in stormy weather .. they would have been too busy managing the ship  trying not collide wth each other or sink from storm damage ..in reality when Royal Navy was blockading the French a storm would scatter the blockading fleet up and down the english channel they couldnt even remain on station nevermind fight a fleet engagement

. secondly there is too much suspicion and salt  already in the game over exploits .. imagine nation A  attacks nation B port and in 3 attempts there is a a storm in battle making all 3 attempts failures .. meanwhile nation B attacks Nation A ports and all are calm weather battles ,,, its just not worth the grief

last point would a storm in battle affect in game graphics especially large fleet engagements ?

  14.  I do love it when a poster gets under the skin of other forums users to such an extent they have to revert to  insults and  insinuation about the posters family .

it shows that not only are France winning the NA war  that Hornblower is winning the forum war .😊
