  1. The mortar brig is almost impossible to use:

    • The red aiming circle has been removed.  No indication of how steady the aim and dispersion will be.
    • The white dashed aiming circle is very faint and doesn't paint on land making it useless
    • The shot report shows hull hits yet sometimes its negligible damage...other times it takes down structure.  Are base rock hits registering as hull now?

The round forts also need to be tougher.  They are almost more a liablility for the defender as a buc can easily sail up to one and sink it.  The forts also seem to have a minimum range so they cant shoot close ships.

  2. I would like a visual indication of when the wind is changing such as a color change of the compass needle.  Slow the rate of change a little and keep the range limited to +/- 30 to 45 degrees.  We don't want to much RNG affecting our battle strategies.

For some reason it feels like there is Velcro on my hull whenever I brush another ship it really hooks on with unrealistic friction.

When beached, the Velcro hull sticks my boat to the beach no matter what the wind change.  Still cant get off beach.  Is the friction too high?

  3. Islamorada debrief:

We were short players and were handing out what 1st rates we had to some low and mid level experienced players that wanted to help and learn.  Once again we decided to try mortar brigs to shoot 1st rates which failed every prior attempt.  With 23 ships, 3 mortars and a conni, we were short about 6 lineships to start with.  We tried to do one big group again and our favorite battle callers and killers weren't online so we tried to make do.  Things got worse at the start.  The mortars went downwind straight from the dock and then turned around.  We sailed down wind as soon as the pirate bunch got close enough giving up our wind.  We will learn to sail beam to beam in first rates without giving up precious wind some day.  I though we should have stayed by the fort to right of our dock since there were no pirate mortars.   We sailed down wind and out of the circle and then had to turn around and sail upwind back to the circle.  The pirates cut into the center of our line and captured a few ships.  We got split up and confused sailing in odd directions.  At the end we sort of grouped up 3 to 5 survivors and did a little better focus firing.  It was very frustrating that we couldn't finish off any pirates we got in trouble.

Next time we will do better.  That was a step backward.  No offense to all our guys that tried their best to follow orders and adjust...we just really had a disadvantage and a bad start.

On another note, I think it would be cool if we had to build the forts for our defense and we could choose round or square (require lots of stone and iron).  Then the defender could have additional slots when we joined the port battle which would be the forts we built.  Those fort slots would be manned and could operate the cannons like we used to have long ago...wasn't that fun?  If the forts get destroyed and we lose, the attackers would have to rebuild them if the want.  Just an idea...what you all think about that?

  4. Well glad to see they got the mortar brig fixed so the slots don't disappear after you open them and you get more than 2 pve marks for killing a tower... how about working on the towers and forts showing up at the pbs?  No towers or forts at savannah despite our bringing 3 mortar brigs...what a joke we lost all our 1st rates no chance of getting any points from towers...great work!

John Paul Jones was not well liked. He also wasn't a good politician or merchant.  But what he was is a great naval commander.  The revolutionary war congress understood backing him was far better than arguing or ignoring him.  Hurt feelings took a back seat to war success.  Somehow you need to get the USA nation in game to recognize players that succeed in battle and give them backing.  Econ is great. Logistics are vital to war. But in the end someone has to sail the ships and lead the battles. The best man for the job just might not be winning any popularity contests.

Very interesting and true... and yes I didn't mean to dwell so much on the CMs.  Constitutions can get a lot done but all those lineship ports on the map still a concern.

  6. I am hoping to clear up some of the misinformation I am seeing on this post.  Its unfortunate that we get only here from the disgruntled and argumentative folks on the forum and they paint with a very large brush.  Here's some facts that might help clarify the US situation:

    1. We did form a congress which is representative of all the US clans that want to participate.  We have a weighted voting system and we try to focus on weekly planning strategies since that's about the longest term that makes any sense.  Currently we have 4 main clans.  Our moderator brings up issues one at a time and we allow each clan to speak on the subject and then we evaluate the consequences and opinions in a very civil manner and vote.  We were getting along great.
    2. With the departure of VCO, TF and now IGG we are short on veteran players but we still have quite a few talented and civil minded players.  It might seem toxic based on the continued ranting and name calling we typically see every day by a few bad apples.  Overall we aren't in a meltdown.  As for NPG it seems you heard that Lion will be less involved due to his new endeavour.  Daniel Silver puts a lot of effort into organizing with our crafters and coop system, negociating with other nations and clans, and will probably continue to improve with port battles.  We may try to adopt a 4 group strategy next time instead of putting all the pressure on just one battle caller.  I think Black clan does something like that.  I don't think DD will be cooperating with the rest of the clans anymore and will probably try to solo attack pirate held regions...to each his own.
    3. We are crippled by a lack of conquest marks atm.  I attended every pb we ever had since the wipe and was making 7 per day.  I got up to 90 at one point and then they all got spent on aggies, blueprints, and a couple of Loceans.  The rest of the guys in the US nation barely have any CMs and it looks like we aren't going to be able to do a lineship pb for quite some time.  I got 15 CMs and will be making only 1 CM per day by this weekend so it doesn't look good.  We need to be able to feel we can replace our losses Aggies and lineships if we are gonna sail them.  Hope that makes sense.
    4. Taking Savanah wasn't such a horrible thing IMHO as it has given us a chance to improve on PVP teamwork.  I see a lot of new pirate names patrolling and some lower ranks as well which is great for everyone to learn the tactics.  I think in a week or so other dynamics will begin that may draw the pirates to defend against the brits and maybe at that point we both will feel we've had enough PVP practice around our capital for a while.  It does put a damper on moving trade goods around and doing missions is quite risky.  So in some ways its helping us get some skills but in other ways its keeping us crippled and falling further behind.

So just wanted to share my overview of the US situation at the moment and hope we can all move on with good sportsmanship and enjoy the battles to come.  Good luck to you all and happy sails!

  7. If the unlock grind wasn't bad enough already...I had a mortar brig with unlocked slot 1 and lost it after battle at islamadora.  I got a new one and guess what...no slots unlocked.  So I used it at San Marcos and sank two towers with it.  Wow I got 4 XP now on slot 1.  Very buggy!  Imagine the rage if this happens with other ships.

  8. You guys are joking right?  Didn't know there was a rule the pb had to be set at 8pm est sharp...   Anyway we did that on sunday afternoon and it was 1.5 hrs early I guess.  I don't see a screen shot or report of the battle but I think it was 25 US vs 23 Pirates (Tex usually has the info up promptly but not this one...)  We had good wind and a good strategy for that one that Lionshaft orchestrated.  Go ahead and try to rain on our parade but I think its more fun for us all if we keep the pb times in the evening as you say.  Bring on the battles...glhf!

  9. I see the concern many of you raise... the proper consequence of getting severely damaged is not strong enough.  In reality they would be planking from the inside and leaks would persist.

Consideration:  If you are damaged to x% in one of the 4 armor areas you are permanently limited to x+y% as a maximum repair level.  x and y will both depend on which of the 4 armor areas, the number of repairs used, the ship class, and possibly more.

For example, you are damaged to 20% starboard and are permanently limited to 50% on the starboard armor.  If you only got damaged to 50%, you could have repaired to 100%.

Is this any help with the issue?

  10. When the battle begins, would it be possible to allow 20 or so seconds for players to access the constructor and modify their weapons (or pick a saved config).  It seems like it would be more interesting to pick your weapons once you know the teams and ships you're up against.  If the team members could collude during some time before the game launches as to who should load out longs and who should go for carronades, that might add a lot to the game.  Any thoughts if this would be possible / desirable?
