  1. Thank you for sharing this mix with us :) really nice ships and i hope that for the next ship poll what ship next would be only for the North Europe country s

In my opinion they are next in line that developers need to give a little care . They where not just an observers in that time period they where quite involved in world shaping policies of that time and they did have a nice and powerful ships .

Further more considering of the knowledge in ship building and naval affairs and navigation through history i really think that the next ship poll will be only of the North Europe Country s (DanNor,Swe primary )

And note that im not from those country s so im not cheering for my domestic ship design.

  2. The USS Ohio built in 1817 - 1820 should qualify - it carried 104 guns!

This thing is so ugly that i would not sail it even if i got it for free from the Americans as a gift :P j/k

There are so many better and prettyer 1st rates out there ( British,French,Spanish,Sweden,Denmark and Dutch ofc).

I m really not so found of making more American ships atm maybe only Rattlesnake but for the rest for no its NO from me.

And  another thing to point out that America is the youngest nation here so in my point of view its not fair to the other nations that dont have not one ship in game and they where sailing the high seas before Americans knew what is boat used for.

  3.

If I decide, that high risk (like in your example - small ship ramming bigger one-it will usually end with smaller ship doom) ramming can make difference, and in effect -help my team/squadron/fleet, then I will not deliberate if that's nice or not - i will just ram. That's tool for victory, total destruction of enemy fleet, achieved by all means.

Source-‘Appendix IV: Memorandum on Sea-Power and the Principles Involved’, printed in Nicholas Tracy (ed.),The Collective Naval Defence of the Empire,1900-1940 (Navy Records Society Vol.136, 1997), p.7.

First you all must get the difference of spite intentional ramming and ramming or not even ramming its a gently slap in your bow allmoust no dmg as dmg is done but you wrecked his bowsprit to achive advantage in battle over that ship for your self or for your squadron . (Example).

Now intentional ramming in some rare situations are also welcomed and i did it more then once.

(example) > Line is formed by both sides at one point one guy from the opposite team see a gap in our lines and he charged to our last SoL in line for a raking shoot in his Bellona (player name >abond<) our last SoL is Victory (player name >Atomic Tiger <) im saying names here because i know they wont mind and those 2 player are very mature and with a very good behaviour in game and out of it and they are also a very good players in NA and i enjoy playing with them.

I was in a Trinc near Victory at his outside parallel with him and i saw what is abond panning to do so i slowed down a bit in my Trinc with full health with all 3 repairs still on and i turned  starboard at a right time and before abond had a clear shot i rammed with full speed in his bow (head to head) and i stoped him there did some dmg to him i got the whorse end was really in a bad shape and i managed to place my self in the middle of vic and bellona

then Bellona open fire on me as he saw he will not be able to pull that raking shoot on Vic and with dmg that i recived from ramming + that B/S of bellona i was sinking fast and no repairs is able to stop it.

Now most players will asap start to bitch at me and calling names and stuff but not those 2 guys that are involved in this mess (fight, accident)

They both where so happy of that move made by me and said that they never seen noting similar so far and that i did more then great and that there is absolutely no holding grudges at all from that move i did.

  4. Well that's why I say that we're lucky that our community is right now mostly composed of mature individuals with a good sense of what they want for this game - a sportmanship atmosphere, respect and good fun between players. I doubt anyone here would fall for using naming and shaming for his own particular reasons and dislike for a certain someone, instead of doing things for the good of the game. And if anyone gets caught on doing it, well ,he'll be putting himself in evidence, so whatever such a try would probably backfire.

Again, the key here is that this community is still young and healthy enough. What I propose wouldn't be tolerable nor acceptable nor would certainly work in an environment poisoned by trolls, ignorants, immature kids ,etc. You allow for Name and Shame in WoT or War Thunder, the consequences would be disasterous because the communities themselves already are "infected" with bad behaviour as an habit.

but if we take that approach in a community like this, I'm sure there'd be no such trouble. Again that's just me and my opinion. I know name and shame "tactics" have a bad reputation but that's because they've been pulled in the past mostly in games with pretty bad communities with massive egos and private agendas. But if established in a clean environment, I think it would work perfectly.

    Sir Rambj,

I just want to add to your post something that you mite forgot to say or to touch a bit there.

You are drawing some parallel with WoT and WT and you are absolutly right on those matters and for in game and forums behavior .

But that is happening in many games not just in those 2 so my point is loads and loads such players will come to this game when it would be fully released and you have to be aware of that.

So what can we really do about it as you said and you are right i quote you here > because the communities themselves are already infected with a bad behavior as an habit < and not just in game on forums also.

Habit is a nasty thing once you get her its hard to get rid of it (when it is a bad habit).

Now that being said i agree with lots of you here that we first need to be role model for that kind of players and that we do what is in our power to do

and that is helping any newcomer with his problems with his question and show him around a bit maybe explain to him some tactics so he can fill in better and that he understand the game dynamics better.

But what about those players that you stated that are there and they are in big numbers not small and they will come to this game you, me , we cant stop that from happening and they are like you said already infected with a bad habit both in game and out of it and they are like that probably in real life too .

So my question is what to do with those kind of players and there will be those kind of players ?

And its good that you posted this so early on before the game really starts coz by then it will be to late to adress the matter when the weal is already in motion.

  5. I dont like the idea at all it is good like it is this what you suggest is easy play nothing more .nothing is wrong with this system that we allready have in game .

You just want to to combat be more simple or you did not get the hang of it it just need a little practice nothing more...

So you want fire while in tele mode that is not good you as a captain can only watch through the telescope you dont aim sailor does you dont fire sailor does . So i think this system we have now is good and close to the real life thing.

Or do you want that devs. put a cord on all guns and that you as a captain pull the cord and all the guns fire while you are in tele mode? while there you can ask devs.. to make a graf in your telescope with range scale and a crosshair in the middle and there you go you will have it all then.

Plz no telescope fire (people allready have problems with tunnel vision as it is if they make this its only gonna get worse .

  6. Furling sails takes men aloft who would be at high risk if the rigging was targeted. This would mean a lot of crew loss from such activity. I can't believe they really had lines of men constantly standing on the yard arms waiting to furl sail in the middle of a fight every time an opponent fired a ranging chain shot.

Just look at old pictures and you will see that they never furling sails all the way when out of port they are in some kind of way roughly semi furled the sails then looks sloppy furled.

  7. Sir Axralis, @maturin is one of the people on these forums with a lot of knowledge about sailing square rigged vessels. True, he is not the Bosun on the brigantine Fair Jeanne, such as @Ryan21 is, but he sure knows a lot about ship and their sailing capabilities.

Your 'conclusion' seems to draw from a somewhat shallow argumentation, if I may so say so myself.

    ~Brigand

    Helloo sir Brigand,

yes i made a mistake in my post i did not make it very good and i did not divide 3 masts ships and 1 mast ships to compare so im sorry for that.

Well i draw my conclusion from real life sailing the most and that beeing said im not an expert on 3 masts ships like sir Maturin so i hear to learn also from the people that has knowledge of the era much better then me.

But as you asked im a sailor i started sailing when i was 7 yrs old and been in most of the today classes (optimist,laser,470) also im a windsurfer and know how to drive a kite (wich i dont like much).

So no hard feelings we are just having a discussion here :)

  8. I think you admit that Point 1 is just wrong, so let's move on to the other two.

Unless you provide some specifics, I can't see what you are referring to.

You trim a full-rigged ship for upwind or downwind sailing by setting or dousing the right sails. The most important factor here is hull shape. The masts and spars of 18th Century warships are arranged based on standardized formulas, without any clear tradeoffs between maneuverability and speed that I know of. The most you can do historically is shift a mast slightly, or re-size a yard.

And I have never heard of ships being built specifically for fast turning, which appears to be a modern videogame and aviation concept. Speed was prized in both frigates and and 74s. Feel free to post any examples to the contrary thst you have. But unless you come back with some actual technical explanations or statements by good sources, I can't regard your claims very highly.

Edit: Brigand, your link there was very unexpected. :P

    Cheers

Well you are right in general regarding SoL s and 3 masts ships but even they could be trimmed to go better upwind by a small amount by adding for example a little bigger jibs at front and flat them us much is possible that would help a little in going upwind and at little more better angle.

Now for light ships with one mast its a different thing entirely they can drasticly improve their downwind and upwind performance not by adding new sails or stuff like that only by mast (bending) to the rear or to the front. If you bend the mast a little backwards the boat will goes  better upwind if you lose a bit and lean a bit forward it will go better downwind.

And yes i did not elaborate like this at the start so i may couse some confusion and you are totaly right about 3 masts ships so its my mistake sry about that Maturin .

                                                                                                                                                                                                             Capt. Axis

  9. Did you just make all of that up...?

Do you know anything about sailing ?

How you rig you boat its very important it will sail how you rig it. also the hull design is very important also.

So for example you and me are in a Bellona  you rigged you Bellona for downwind and i did my for upwind.

Conclusion > i will never catch you downwind  coy you will be faster then me on the other hand i will sail much better upwind at better angle and faster then you can.

i m not sure in 18st but nowdays you can rig your boat even on the sea while you are on the way not just in port but im not sure if that is the case in 18st ships i think they did changes on sea but im not sure.

  10. Just because the data does not exist doesn't mean its not true.

The heavier a ship is the more force is has to overcome to turn. Take this as the neutral force, the force that resists movement. If the ship is going 10 knots it will have a forward speed and pseudo force which is basically inertia. To turn the ship a force must be applied that overcomes this inertia as well as any and all friction. Not to mention more of a SOL will be underwater than a frigate increasing drag and the amount of water needing to be displaced to move said boat forward.

Basically the bigger it is the slower it will turn or accelerate given the same propulsion method and propulsion force ratio, if the 74 had a modern day side turbine stuck on the side or 10x the amount of sails and a rudder 10x as big  i'm sure it would out turn the constitution. Take a destroyer vs a cruiser vs a battleship, you can tell which is the most agile just by looking at their size and knowing their force to mass ratios are roughly the same.

The 74 was mass produced as it was a compromise, a good amount of firepower, a good amount of speed, a balanced cost, less crew than a 1st rate etc etc etc. Why did Germany and Britain build pocket battlecruisers in WW1? To compromise and put big firepower into a more maneuverable and smaller package. Losing a 74 isn't as devastating as losing a 112 but that 74 can sink said 112. You can't look at something and say since they were mass produced they had to be the best at everything, maybe they were good at everything. Take the Russian T-34, was it the best tank in WW2? Did it turn the fastest? Did it hit the hardest? Was it the most armoured? No. Was it the best bang for the buck for the russians? Yes. Hence it was mass produced while Germany pumped out fewer, better tanks, and we know how that went.

TLDR they have the same propulsion ratios and so the forces being scaled up will result in the smaller ships out-turning the large ship. The only argument would be if the small ship was sailed by cats and the large ship by master seamen than maybe it would turn faster ;P

A 74 can turn better then some heavy frigates there are 3 main reasons for that.

    1. a 74 has much more experience crew then the frig witch  result in better sailing turning maneuvering .

    2. Rigging on boats .example > Connie is rigged for speed 74 is rigged for turning = Connie will turn wider then the 74 + Connie is build for the speed at the start so shes not very good at turning in the first place.

    3. Hull design is also a very important fact in this matter ( again it depends what is build for turning ,speeding or something in the middle .

  11. Really like your Post axralis. Winning for a Team should mean more. But lots of people will keep on doing the Damagegrind its to be feared. :(

The problem is that if people would play the game as it should this goes for smaller vessels not for SoL s they would do so much less dmg maybe not even half on their full dmg output. So if the smaller ships do they job as they should witch is protecting SoL s and allways be near her listen to orders that the captains in SoL are giving.  What we see at the moment is that for the couse of dmg they brake off early go who knows where and engage who knows where to deal some dmg while in that time the SoL that for example that frig was to protect was getting raked all the time and he realy cant do anything about it becouse his escort is on the other part of the map doing dmg and thinking hes doing great for the team.

  12. I chose four. Sorry.

*Improve Sailing....Only because of all the features, this one is closest to completion. We need tweaks for the tacking system and a way to disable the fore-and-aft sails. I also strongly feel that we should have an advanced optional feature for control over individual sails, even if in prototype form with a proof-of-concept UI. I would also love to see some visual features like luffing and clewing up, but that can wait until the future.

*improve damage model....This feature is about half-done, with very nice hull damage, and some progress on rigging damage. Sinking is still the only outcome of battle, and that is a dangerous state to release the game in. Rigging damage needs to be better than POTBS, which it barely is, right now. And crew damage needs to matter. The devs' vision of different paths to victory does not yet exist.

*Prototype of open world.....This prototype can be as janky and crude as you like, just get it out there. It seems to me that only 5% of the English-speaking forum has much interest in a WoT-style game without persistent open world play. The prototype will be your promise of things to come, and draw people into the testing more by offering more unpredictability.

*Add full line of ships......Well, maybe not a full line-up. Just give back the testing ships we had earlier. Your poor new testers haven't seen anything but Victory the pregnant elephant. :)

I would just add to this that they should implement a rigging system ...for example a 3 way to rig your boat  1. rig for speed ( you will go faster on straight line but you will turn more wide ... 2. rig for turn > you speed will not be so great at straight line but you will turn and tack much better.

3 . semi rig > a balanced rig for spped and turn...

or something similar to this, i think this feature is will add a diveristy and it is very realistic. some Captains like their boat to go more faster and better upwind and they will rig their boat accordingly but they will lose full potencial of downwind sailing or the other way around some Capt.. like to sail better and faster downwind or some of them like to have 50-50 balanced rigging on the ship.

  13. Helloo noble Spaniards !

Helloo my name is  Capt. Axis  and i would be honored to join you and to sail under Spanish flag and fight for Armada Espanola .

Im coming from Croatia city of Zadar wich is by the sea i have 35yrs  im a sailor ,started sailing when i was 7 yrs old and still doing it.

If not be able to speak spanish is some kind of no go im ok with it.Otherwise i speak Eng and Italian very good and i understand some spanish but i dont know how to speak only few words ,if i join you i hope to learn some language and ofc

rule the sea with you all :)

  14. Is it the Steam account name, or profile name that is used in game? You can change the profile name, just not the account name.

Profile name not the steam account name is used for your nick ingame.

And yes i think you can change you profile name in you account options on steam, but be aware if the name is taken you cannot use it so it has to be a brand new nick that nooneis using on steam.

  15. You cant realy avoid it maybe now in early stages of Alpha but later on when the game start for real it will be much much whorse like Bart said the more and more players kick in the bad language will be very common not just in lobby chat ingame also im afraid.

  17. Dear sir*s

I realy enyoy playing and testing your game and i have a couple of suggestions,

From my playing perspective i noticed that from my 100% time spend in game 80% and more are very close range combat pure clean Double shot broadsides from all the boats big and small ones. Damage grinding way of progress also does not help that couse to test better all mechanics of the game so what that meens if that we use all available recourses in game and give them a proper test time to say like that.

My suggestion is that you put some kind of reward for the side wining the battle, for example everything stays the same you just add some kind of reward (+3k dmg for all ships in wining side* ) in that way people will behave drasticly different on the seas and surely they will spend much more time giving the other things in game a proper evaluation and give the proper feedback to the developer"s not just 2x Double shoot 80% of time feedback.
