Keep in mind that Lee had strategic considerations to think of as well. He certainly understood the "arithmetic" of the war and understood that a decisive blow to bring about peace was necessary. I have always thought there was an air of desparation about the way Lee fought Gettysburg. Further, keep in mind that he wanted to avoid combat until his army was concentrated but the actions of Heth on the first day abrogated that idea. One of the most interesting things about this battle is all the analysis that can go into what actually happened and, perhaps more fun, discussing the "what ifs."
