In those battles, damaging or sinking enemy warship give Victory points. If you gather enough relative to you enemies, the enemy will search for peace.
Meanwhile both side will try to sink enemy transports or blockade the enemy. Which also generate VP and weakens the enemy economy.
Yeah this much I figured out, was looking for more detailed information. Like how much more VP are needed to win and such, how long the campaign lasts before victory is declared.

I was noticing this too, struggling to build what I feel are reasonably protected ships and having no tonnage to do anything but make an armored target or skimping on armor and having room for guns and ammo.

How exactly does this work? I've got some basic idea of things but is there anything concrete about how the campaign rules work and such?

I'm just starting to learn the game so don't have any standard practices yet formed. But I'll try to remember to come back to this when I do form some, if they don't radically change the way things are currently working soon.
