  1. Another hot button topic gone wrong - who'd have thought?

Sin Kahn (interesting name there), you need to come to terms with the fact that Religion and Morality are not the same thing.  In fact, these two concepts are usually much further apart than anyone will admit.

The "Immorality" you describe is not a result of a lack of Religion - it's called "Escapism", to want and need to imagine one self in a space and time where morality and consequence do not exist but for it's representation in the game's rules.  We are here to discuss that representation.  The outliers - those individuals who troll and bait and goad online are victims of their own GIFT (look it up on know your meme), and it is again not a result of religion, but the result of idiots having the luxury of anonymity and an audience with no responsibility or culpability.

In fact, your insistence that you are somehow a moral paragon because you are Religious betrays those who've bled and died for your Religion and your right to practice it so openly, but I digress.

    TL;DR - Morality =/= Religion

  2. Just hope the Danish Christian Vll From 1767 will be brought into the game :)

I'll add my vote here too - she's a beauty.

  3. If I'm to vote, I'd say go with the St Pavel (in her 90-gun setup).  Plans are more readily available, and at 90 guns, she's a little more snugly in between the 74 and the 104-gun Victory, whereas the 80-gunner would be very close to the 74.

I'm all for French ships, but alas, those hardworking serfs at Brest did their best work on the myriad of Frigates (and Corvettes), 3rd Rates and 1st Rates.

  4. Oh I know she was real - she's pretty interesting in and of herself.

It's like somebody took a frigate, then scaled it down to make a cartoon version for kids, then somebody with a lot of money said: "Well that's an excellent idea!  Build it!"

In terms of Naval Action though, she'll be unique - 6x 4pdrs is even less than the Lynx, but she's a square rigger and will thus aim much better at all ranges (with the current mechanics).

That said, welcome aboard weirdguy, and enjoy the ride.

  5. Any info on the Schooner and the Frigate that can be seen on the Naval Action's own page? (here: http://www.navalaction.com/#ageofsail ) Will they eventually join the alpha or are they completely left out?

If you read admin's post on Page 4, he adresses the Frigate specifically as "L'Aurore" by a very talented 3D modeller.  Once she's re-optimised, she'll be in game.  Which is shortly, hopefully.

As for the Schooner, no idea.  I still maintain it looks like the HMS Halifax.

  6. I was wondering if you were going to make the jump to 5. Hopefully we get some more visual goodness from the new version.

We should - Unity 5 brings, among loads of other things, Physics Based Shading and hopefully more streamlined render pipelines.  I just squeal as I imagine what that subsurface light-scattering effects will do - you could actually see your ship's hull get wet and watch the water run off with every wave.  The wood grain would technically be able to show underneath the hull paint.  The bright-work would pop a bit better...

It'll all just be so damned pretty. :D

  7. My framerates have somehow improved...

I was getting ~75fps on a single GTX780.  After the last two patches (and one nVidia Driver update) I decided to crank it up to Custom with all the bells and whistles going.

Now I'm getting 100fps+ - drops down to about 80fps with significant action and rough seas...

    Did I accidentally break Unity?

  8. "Rattlesnake" privateer 1780

Massachusetts Privateer Ship Rattlesnake was designed by John Peck of Boston, Massachusetts, and probably built at Plymouth in 1780.1 She was very lightly built and had no wales, and was reputedly very fast. Rattlesnake appeared as a miniature frigate, with detached quarterdeck and forecastle. She may have had gangways and/or gratings extending from the quarterdeck to the forecastle. These would have been removed in action. Rattlesnake measured 89'3" on the deck, 74'11" on the keel, 22'4" in beam, with a depth in the hold of 8'10 1⁄2" and measured 199 tons.2

I think this ship would be a blast and would fit between the brig and surprise

I find this ship incredibly fascinating - good find sir!

She even looks pierced for bow-chasers - shamelessly aggressive little thing, like it's namesake.

  9. I should probably add that I was sailing the Yacht at the time this started happening, in the new and improved Small Boat PvE (it's much better now, btw - the matchmaker no longer actively hates me).

    Machine Spec is as follows:

    MSI Z77G43 Gaming MoBo

    Core i7 3770 @ 3.7GHz

    16GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz CL9 RAM

    Samsung 240GB SSD

MSI Gaming Edition GTX 780 running nVidia 344.48

  10. Problem:                           After today's patch, NA crashes after only running for a few minutes

Why is it s problem?         It's pretty obvious methinks... :P

What should developers do:  I've gone into my application log and pulled the crash dumps, which I'll post here:

The program Client.exe version 4.5.1.22018 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.

  11. Glad you found it interesting!

I'm just fascinated by old documents. It's probably because I'm a huge nerd but I think it's pretty awesome that I could just walk into the national archives and get to handle 250 year old drawings just like that. Archivist's cotton gloves required but otherwise I was free to look and touch. It felt pretty special.

It must have been a special experience!

  12. Is Pirates still a thing?  I cannot imagine there are enough Captains left for it to be profitable to Portalus.

I doubt it's still a thing.  I'm seeing more and more names I recognise from my days on Tiggy's French side - spotted Amphore just yesterday in NA's chat.

The economy remodel has alienated what was left of the PvE fleeters and the RvR (last I checked) had been reduced to some kind of 4th Rate Meta (likely economy-influenced).

PvP in that game always been a gankfest, so I don't even have to mention what it's like now that the economy is forcing players into cheaper, lighter ships.

  13. beautiful and unique find renhanxue, certainly looks to be chapman's hand, even if the original draught was drawn by another.

Must agree - it'd be nice to see a Swedish Frigate.  I find them beautifully understated for most part (except ships like the Vasa, built almost entirely out of Pomp and Circumstance).

Also, I believe af Chapman an equal to the genius of Sane.

  14. I think the terms "historical" and "famous" are getting confused here. There are plenty of historical plans for ships of great variety that were never famous. There is no need for fantasy ships, and it would introduce a host of problems. Sticking with historical designs tends to be self-balancing as they were all made with a consistent set of real world limitations.

You are, of course, right - my meaning was "historical" and not necessarily "famous".

Like the current Brig, which is historically correct for the period, the game should be well-served with unnamed (or player-named) generic ships of most classes (Frigates especially - as they were rather prolific) without having to be of a specific class.  A light, 26-gun Frigate of ~500 tons burthen is just that - it's certainly not a game-breaker, even though it would be, for all intents and purposes, "made up" by a user/the Devs.

I think everybody shares the same sentiment - and I hardly doubt the Devs would allow HMS #OPSWAGLOL to leave drydock with her 400 guns and gas-turbine engines.

  15. I don't think anyone is saying we need to add early ironclads or something ridiculous like that - the point is (especially when the Warships are saturated with historical content) that there's going to be a huge gap at the bottom-to-mid end concerning Brigs, Merchanmen and other working boats.

Name one famous fishing smack that isn't famous for getting ripped up by a more famous Warship?

So at some point, somebody is going to have to look at some old drawings, maybe at Sane and af Chapman's plates and put something together that didn't necessarily terrorise the Bluefin Tunas of the period, but is still very much at home in the 18th and early 19th century waters.  It's hardly a game-breaking concept.  In fact - please help me out veteran forumites - I don't think the Yacht or the Brig are based specifically on any one ship.

  16. 26 going on 226 so I'm told. Apparently fountain pens and the words that I tend to use are a thing of the past.

Utter poppycock.  Fountain pens are marvellous creations of science - so much better than these featherless quills the children use.
