Blank blue-gray screen when launching game

So I was trying to launch the game from the non-steam launcher, and when I hit "Play game", it will open the game, but it will just be a blank, blueish-gray screen with just the options, help, and bug icons visible, along with the patch number in the corner (1.05 Live).  I can open the options/pause menu, but all the text on the buttons is gone.  It will not load anything from this point.

 

Do I need to get the steam version or is there a fix?
