  1. If you can find hard facts about them I will gladly include them. Just post them here.

These are some of the posts from Admin I could find:

We already created a technology masterpiece for the open world. Our Caribbean map is seamless, huge and beautiful and suited for the multiplayer with changing time of day and potentially weather. People demanding more don't yet appreciate this achievement - but they will.

Pictures will others to understand what you are talking better (including us).

Sails luffing of flutter will not be implemented in the foreseeable future. Weather, fires and explosions and somewhat improved smoke first - then we will see if we have FPS reserves left.

Fog, rains and storms will be implemented. Maybe will need to play some tricks like Star Citizen with the hidden loading screens.

  2. In open world I believe statistic leaderboards on player level are not the way to go. What I would prefer is some kind of reputation system were statistics have an effect on your reputation. For instance if you manage to regularly sink bigger ships, if your hit ratio is very high/low, if you have sailed a lot of miles, if you have traded a lot in a certain product, if you sunk a lot of ships of a specific nation. This could perhaps all translate somehow in your reputation visable to other players.

The normal stats could be private and comparable to the average of all players so you can see how you are doing in a specific category.

  3. Damn I envy you guys from Australia  :)

I try to find some time late at night usually as I am working during the day.

Sometimes an hour here and there in the morning or afternoon in the weekend as we don't have that 'problem' of being too hot inside here (Netherlands).

  4. Probably not more interesting but better suited for the time period with the game focusing on 18th Century at the moment. Both the 7 Provincieën and Prins Willem are much older ships.

Would not mind piloting the Amsterdam at all, she looks very nice and indeed with Open World testing around the corner we need some of these types of ships in the game.

  5. Maybe the French would have done better if they had focused more on their navy sooner. I understand in those times if you were French the more honorable prestigious thing to do was join the army not the navy.

But in the end you always have a chance, even against a bigger foe, that’s why we have tactics and alliances.

That said in the game, as been mentioned now a couple times, it is not really important if France had a chance because we are here to rewrite history.

It is kind of like Fifa. You are not going to not pick England knowing they never had a real chance of winning the World Cup after the sixties  ;)

  6. In 1672 & 1673, yes... Michiel Adriaanszoon de Ruyter fought on equal terms in several battles with France & England (allies at the time), dispite being badly outnumbered. In the process, he poisoned relations between France / England...as public perception blamed the French navy for failing to share equally in the great battles of the war, Solbay (28 May 1672) and the Texel (11 August 1673). [in the latter battle, sixty Dutch ships of 40 or more guns held their own against eighty-six British and French ships of similar size.]

The book goes on a bit more. TL;DR it was not sustainable, and the greatest admiral of that century (de Ruyter) is mortally wounded in battle. That war ends in 1678 with Netherlands / Spain essentially losing (fun to note that England was not in the war by this point, and was actually on the verge of JOINING against France prior to the treaty of Nymwegen (Nijmegen) being signed).

So I guess we can conclude that France beat Dutch :P not my true conclusion... de Ruyter was amazing. Able to win the battles, but not a sustained war against larger fleets.

Well I guess it depends what you call a sustained war. According to the history books there were 4 Anglo-Dutch wars. They all lasted some years and both the British and the Dutch won two each. I believe at least one of them was against a larger fleet (English/French vs Dutch).

By the way one of the reasons for the fourth one (1780-1784) was the fact that we Dutch supported the rebellion in the American colonies against English rule supplying the Americans with weapons and ammunition. America was an example for Dutch patriots who also wanted to have a more democratic form of government  :)

  7. I don't think the devs have said they are not interested in the earlier time period. Originally they stated the ship line-up as 16th Century to the end of Napoleonic Wars.

It is probably due to the fact that the crowd here is for a large part British and American that they seem to be focusing on the Napoleonic area at the moment. The US Navy was almost none existent before that time and the British were at their peak.

The Dutch had some beautiful ships so I hope they will include some earlier ships as well. Also from countries like Portugal.
