  1. I wish people would stop voting for nationality of a ship, rather than the ship and shipclass itself...what good is the umpteenth 1st rate just because it's Dutch, British, Spanish, Portuguese, US or Micronesian, when the whole rest is a big gap? Fairly sure the final shiplist of this title will have almost every nation that ever took to the seas in those ages, repesented properly.

  2. I know that Akella's Age of Pirates titles had the possibility to trade slaves with the "cost" of increased food consumption. I'm torn about the issue, if slaves are to be "just another good on the list of tradeables", I don't see the point of having them at all. If their major impact on the economy of the overseas settlements however would be reflected properly, I could see it implemented (for historical correct depiction of the era, it simply wasn't a very humane time). It's a very "hot iron" though, and as long as the devs don't give a statement about if and how they'd see it implemented, I'll keep my vote at "No".

  3. Galleons were kinda "Dual Purpose", a warship on one side, but also a transport vessel with considerable amount of cargo hold (transporting the riches from the colonies back to Spain), that's why they're as huge and have those "castles" and quite impressive amount of cannon. Their flaws however became very apparent when the Spanish Armada had their nightmare off the coasts of England. The heavy spanish galleons were slow and not very maneuverable, while the then newly designed, "race built" (razeed, without castles) english ships were faster, more maneuverable and carried longer range cannons. After the defeat of the Armada the Spanish also reiterated their naval doctrins and priorities and started to adapt the new designs.

I'm by no means an expert on the matter however, so if anyone here has better knowledge feel free to correct and/or complete what I said, plz. :)

  4. As long as religions aren't a major factor in gameplay, I don't mind them being integrated, but to make them influence ship/crew performance? Plz no.

Make them like independent minor factions that can provide assignments/quests. They might also have small missions/abbeys  on the world map that could provide certain special trade goods (incense, etc. or something like that).

  5. First, make the ability to know a ship's Captain based off the recognition skill. Learning a Captain's name will be something that happens in the open world. Maybe through battle, maybe through peaceful encounters.

In a battle you will only see the names of the Captain's that you have gained information about in your travels and the distance at which you see that name will be based off of your recognition skill or maybe how many times you have encountered a particular Captain on the high seas. This should appease somewhat the realism junkies since the name acquisition will be more immersive as it will be linked to a Captain's info gathering. The one caviot would have to be that you would recognize that Captain no matter what ship he is sailing and that is because this is a game and he will have the ability to switch ships on a whim.

This is something that I thought of as well. (But I was too tired to write it down last night ^^) +1

  6. 6. Ultimately, known groups will become familiar. You will see the same set of guys running around together and therefore, the names above their heads are unimportant. Most likely in these practiced groups, all the players will be a threat, not just one of them.

    7. The last reason revolves around game play. How fun is it to not know who you are fighting? Relationships in game develop not just with those of your own nation but also with those you fight and learn to respect on the open ocean. By removing names then your opponents become anonymous which in my opinion is boring.

How much fun would it be for those "notorious" captains to be recognized instantly and being avoided like the plague, though?

  7. I used to avoid steam like the bubonic plague when it came out, kept away from it and didn't have any feeling of "missing out". That all changed with "Empire: Total War" (would have lasted longer, had I only known what a mess this title was at release....). Since then I aquired a bunch of games through steam and other DRMs and so far haven't run into any issues. But if given the chance, I still prefer games that I don't have to run/install through steam. Guess I'm just old school in that way... or simply: just old ^^.

  8. For opposing team replace name with enemy flag icon (optional to turn off totally), leave names for your own team, for tactical reasons.

I like this idea a lot. As long as we don't have a customisation option ingame yet, I think this would be the best solution to avoid huge friendly fire incidents., while giving our "celebrities" a break from being "Public Enemy No.1" ^^.

  9. I don't understand why so many are voting for the US or British ships next, we already have a big US & British ships ingame, we need something from the other nations first IMHO.

Come on guys, let's get some diversity in there!

To me the ship type/class matters more than where it was built. Imo we need more diversity in shipclasses and then we can worry about "national pride" and who got the longest....list of ships ingame ;)

  10. I voted for the "Prince de Neufchatel", "Rattlesnake" (beautiful little ship, she is), "Graña" and "Santa Leocadia" (I love frigates and the Spanish really deserve to have more ships featured ingame).

In the SoL category I went with the "Wasa", the "Wenden" (good old PotBS memories) and the "Soleil Royal" (older design, but still, a beautiful beast).
