This is why vast majority of real pirates sailed in 6th and 7th rate ships, Brigs, Snows, Schooners, and Ketches.
Their biggest advantage is they would hide as trade ships in major trade routes and wait in search of prey. No one looks twice at a fellow trade ship. They would mirror that ship for a few hours, sometimes days, till they were sure they had the element of surprise then run it down, and take the ship before it had a chance to escape.
Each pirate had their own style on taking a ship, some were very methodical others were brutal and fast. One thing is sure, few of them lived very long. Average life of a real pirate was 12-18months.
being able to disguise them selves as trade ships of other nations.... yes pirates would like that
seriously though, that would be a massive advantage even if limiting them to shallow water ships, hmm not sure how that would ballance
another idea,
A hard limit of 5th rates, but able to over crew them by 20/30%, or a large boarding bonus. tp to free towns.
They'd lose all their deep water ports maybe but keep the shallows. (is kidds etc shallow?)
Just ideas really, I'm sure there r better ones
some pirate views would be appreciated as their view will be different from mine.

Pirates should be different, but we cant just take away portbattles and 1st rates from them with out giving them something to replace it (tempting as it is)
maybe we should start a radical ideas for pirates thread

I don't know for sure, I know we have waited 2 mins in the past so we all exit the port and get in together. No done a port defence since wipe but our clan has had us getting defensive points in key areas, so they must think you do.

I believe this isn't true for defenders.
I believe it is. you can grind up defensive points.

The idea of clans rebelling and just being able to kill fellow countrymen is not good, its just got exploit written all over it (though it would be nice to kill alts)
However, I do like the idea that a clan or group of clans could split away and form their own country, clan lead, and take ports (from anyone)
If the Rebellion successfully takes a port it then becomes a nation that only clan members can be part of. Clan lead and alt free.

off memory gb has had 2 contested port battles (3 if you count New Orleans)

There you go. Simple solution. For example. Cartagena Port Battle. I had well over 1200 earned hostility points defending yet I was not allowed in port battle due to not having a 1st rate since I don't have conquest marks. Well.... That is a Catch 22 . Why should someone in a clan who has not earned hostility be able to join and get 3 conquest marks per day . Vice versa works too. So. conquest marks given out as a percentage to all whom participated and earned.
Also like the 60 second invisibility.
Going off topic here, but
1. no one can stop you entering a port battle if you've earned the hostility
2. we were asking people not in 4th rates or above not to enter as we did not know if the Spanish were going to show up, and if half the pb fleet were in indi's we would lose the battle, and gb (as a nation) desperately needed those x3 conquest marks.
one contradicts the other but that's what happened and will probably continue to happen as conquest marks are so important atm.

1. Tp to port battle VERY URGENT
2. Stop people entering a battle that were not on the horizon when it started.
3. to be able to leave a battle after a long hard fight and not be ganked by several people waiting for you in undamaged ships
4 let us melt down cannons we don't want!

It's pretty poor by my standards...
Playable is a very relative term. Casuals will certainly not enjoy the current state of the game on average - i have seen enough leave and read enough negative steam reviews to be sure about it.
I think the last patch improved the game a lot for casuals.
Just the removal of the ship grind and introduction of combat marks helped me a lot.
I play 2-3 nights a week.

Great Bunch of guys, and not afraid to sail half way across the map to attack the Spanish SOL's with frigates!

Which RvR are you talking about? The patch is out for more than a month now and there wasnt a single contested PB in my nation. The only thing which still makes me log into this game is our community. Naval Action is a PvE game, time to change my review
Naval Action has a really amazing and addicting fighting system, which is hard to master and has a lot of depth. Also the community is very friendly and helpful for the most part.
But it feels like the developers got their priorities for this game completely wrong. They add more and more boring and monotone grind, RnG items which you need to be able to fight other players and hours of afk sailing through an empty world.
So we have the best naval combat system right here, but are unable to get actual battles because it is buried so far beneath the surface. The RvR that's about to happen (I hope)
So far nations have been grabbing undefended ports because they need conquest marks to build fleets.
Now all the "free" ports are gone and any more conquest will be defended.
I'm not saying this will work, I just hope it does.
People might just sit in their ports and do nothing, which will be boring. I want big fleet battles in and around ports!
The battle lines are drawn, let the RvR begin.

Its an RvR game now, I hope it works.

And since Naval Action legnds will come it actually makes sense to change audience to RvR focus
(still some things are wrong like i already mentioned)
I just hope rvr brings big fleet battles

no no, just my opinion of why we have it.

@Elbizor so instead of PvP & RvR on the PvP Server, our goal is to grind, grind, grind, PvE, grind, grind, trade, trade, so we have something to do, right?
I did say the Devs Think

I wonder, so we get all best PvP players in the game trying to explain Developers that the things are going into wrong direction, but there is very little answer / commentary from them about it. I haven't seen them admit that it's true. We've been through all these problems in past already and they are back again... Just after we got rid of them:
- RNG
- PvE Grind
- Revenge Fleets
- Very Expensive Ships (We had already Fine Woods...)
- Very Little Rewards for PvP (This problem occurs for the very first time, I believe, huge downgrade from past)
1. im ok with it
2. As we're all rear admirals the devs think we need some grind to give us a goal
3. Yep many good ideas already
4. big ships should be expensive though corvettes shouldn't be.
5. I like the idea of a reputation/renown rank, separate to ship rank we have now, that you get points for pvp ( more points against some one higher that you, less for some one lower)

There is no RvR right now because people still need ships. The people that have ships already are scared to lose them. () Or some people just hello kitty the experience of others and tag some guys with alt accounts so the nice sailshooting is happening again.
Sadly most people are pretty slowly building up, once they are built up nations can start to do conquest.
I agree though that something has to happen about revenge ganking. (Like proposed various times)
RvR hasn't happened yet, so far people have been gathering resources and consolidating their borders.
The devs have been leaning towards RvR I think, lets hope they got it right.
When/if it does I hope its all I want it to be

Why not? Theres a ton of stuff which is PvE exclusive (refits, books...) and its a PvP server after all.
No there isn't.

I think its better to reward people who do PvP instead of pushing everyone into this monotone PvE grind. Because right now OW PvP is reduced to a minimum and it feels like a waste of time since I can level my ship through PvE 100 times faster with almost zero risk.
You can also sink ships in RvR and get PvP XP.
Yeah, we just don't get to do it very often!!
The xp grind was a dev thing to give people something to do, like it always is!
I just don't believe that something that makesyou better should be pvp exclusive

Did you even read what I wrote?
2 slots through PvE
2 slots through PvP
1 through money or something else
If you dont like PvP at all try the PvE server maybe?
I read Exactly what you wrote!!
You want the 3rd and 4th slots to be opened by pvp alone! so that those that do pvp a lot will be in better ships... don't you like a fair fight?
As for which server .. I RvR which for me is what this game is all about.
If You don't to RvR try legends.

To get the very powerful ship knowledge slots the game encourages you to grind PvE. Only PvE, everything else is super inefficient. That sucks.
How can we change that?
Make it so that you can unlock 2 ship knowledge slots through PvE XP, 2 through PvP XP (fights only counts when enemy has at least 80% of your BR to discourage ganking) and the last slot through money or portbattles.
This would mean more PvP and less stupid and boring grind.
why is that pvpers think that their ships should be better by right?
10:1 ration would be fairer I agree, but this is just saying "I pvp so my ship should be better!"

The main problem with a global server for all is that many of the EU countries only have EU players and they don't want to be night flipped all the time. only GB and probably pirates would have an even spread of players.
If they made it guild based, then that would be different.

Trying to buddy up with Spain again? you constantly criticise GB for having allies they don't have and yet you try to form alliances where ever you can.
