  1. Yesterday, in the team speak this topic was brought up again as our fleet was chasing down a pirate, who was running from Jamaica to Cuba. Everyone of the 6 members in our small fleet endorsed the use of naming your own ship. The conversation continued to include the colors you choose to paint your ship, placing symbols on the sails, such as the red cross some Spanish ships carried, and decorations like gold trim. The higher the crafted quality level of the ship, the more elaborate the outward appearance that the ship could have. Ships should continue to have black hulls, but colored stripes around the hull were varied throughout history.

Clans could be given the option to include their abbreviation, such as the SLRN placed before the name of the ship, for example, "(SLRN) Endeavor" with a RED stripe, instead of the white stripe covering the gun ports.

I was definitely proud of my gold quality constitution and was sad the first time she sunk. Imagine how much more players would be attached to their ships, if they were able to name and customize them.

P.S. we caught the pirate close to Cuba and only allowed one ship out of the fleet to fight against him out of fairness. We are gentlemen . . .

  2. A couple updates ago there were major improvements made to the weather within the game. Besides the occational storm and periodical fog, there is mist that raises above the sea and visibility has been reduced due to humidity in the air. Very nice touches.

To make the game even more realistic, how about considering some of the following ideas?

    - Completely clear sunny days with no humidity providing perfect vision until the horizon. It does happen in real life. Those are the days we dream about.

    - Days (or a few minutes, at least) with no wind. Add a feature to send the long boats out and pull your ship forward. It would be great during a battle to see if officers would react fast enough to row their ship into position to fire?

    - Storms that actually sink ships. That also happens in real life.

    - High wind days. Only ships that reduce sail to the appropriate surface area would be able to maintain a course or even move forward.

    Any other ideas?

  3. Yes, I am in agreement. The various views mentioned above would be fantastic to have, especially the main masthead. Still, a solution needs to be found for quickly shifting between firing modes of the 4 sides.

Providing us with the possibility to reassign key functions could be a short-term solution. In the long-run, a permanent assignment of key functions including firing your guns should be made. It will make the process of learning the game for beginners, easier.

    cheers!

  4. Gentlemen, Officers, and Admiralty,

I am extremely sorry to have started a discussion about using a map to our advantage (meaning for the British) when other nationalities were included in the forum. My mistake. We had very good pro's and con's to the topic in this thread (even from the Dutch) and it really proves that some sort of map would be useful, if it were bond by the limitations of the era we are playing roles in. At no point in time would I suggest having an in-game map that shows your position. I would rather have wind and water currents actually pushing your ship off course to make the game more realistic. Additionally, adding degrees to the compass would be more satisfying. Still, the suggestion to make the in-game map we now have at our disposal, look more reminiscent of the era, I do favor. Also, as mentioned above, if someone is taking the time to note in excel which goods are being traded at various ports, then a google map is something I will continue to use, unless we receive an in-game map that we can add notes to as a team. There has to be a way within the game to communicate to one another and use the common knowledge to our advantage. A national map would be one way, even though we know there are spies in our mist, which is also the same as 250 years ago. So, if you would like to use the map I have started and contribute to it, I will gladly share. Hopefully, game-labs will make improvements to their map and make it more useful and look more its age.

With all due respect, thank you for your opinions,

  5. The map function with have during the game is better than nothing, but it could do so much more.

    - Showing the actual location of the ship would be great, but that would take away from the challenge of navigation by compass.

    - Could we show the nationality of the ports?

    - Could we list goods sold and traded there?

    - Could we introduce currents to the whole game? Normally, a ship would have to navigate by estimating the course (with a compass) conpensate for true north, adjust for water current and wind drift. I find it almost to easy to navigate in the open world.

    - Could we hide a few islands? It would be great to find an island that wasn't on the map at all.

    - Would it be possible to add notes to a map used by only one nation? Example, the british map could list all goods traded at their ports for use among members.

A few things to think about

  6. I came into one of my outposts tonight and sold two captured Trade Lynxs. I originally had something close to 41'000 gold before the sales and I sold both ship for something just above 17'000 gold. 41+17+17 = 75 k gold. But, I only received 3 k gold and now have a balance of 44 k gold.

Can someone please correct the mistake and fix my gold account to have the 75'000 gold, and determine why it happened in the first place?

    Best regards

  7. Dear Game Labs,

I have almost gotten seasick from the viewing angle changes that take place during battle, when one changes from a shooting mode to a viewing mode. The slightest movement of my mouse extremely exaggerates scene viewing angle changes. Additionally, I have not noticed any changes to the situation, after I adjust the sensitivity of my mouse in the Windows settings between the highest and lowest sensitivity.

    Example:

During battle, sometimes there are enemies on all sides of your ship and you need to shoot left, right, back and front as quickly as possible. Currently, one has to click the right mouse button once to aim one side of the ship and then click the left mouse button to shoot that side. Thereafter click the right mouse click again and endure the exaggerated viewing angle change while attempting to select the correct side to shoot. Click at the wrong moment and instead shooting off a broadside you are stuck looking out the back of your ship as the enemy vessel sails by the side without a scratch. It is truly frustrating.

Instead of using the mouse to select the side to aim, we could use the 6, 7, 8, and 9 keys to select sides of the ship? Then click the left mouse button to shoot. It would speed up the whole process and eliminate the irritating sea-sickness caused by switching between aiming and non-aiming modes.

    Thanks

  8. Thanks everyone for the assistance. I have finally been able to post my profile picture. Strangely, I simply went to my "Sea Lords Virtual Fleet" account, click on the picture and saved the "image address" and pasted it into the field "import a photo from a URL".

So it worked and I now have my face in Naval Action.

Before the game goes live though, the "Use a custom Photo" function should be fully enabled.

    Thanks again!

  9. Dear Wind,

Your advice turned out to be useful. After leaving my home port of Kingston /Port Royal on the Isalnd of Jamaica, I sailed to Haiti, where I was constantly dodging large French vessels. Every time I would find a trader ship, there were simply too many large French navy vessels to attempt an attack. Being nearly surrounded by French vessels I stopped at the neutral port of Jeremie on Haiti. I saw one British frigate and decided to attempt a crossing back to Jamaica. Directly North of Jeremie I saw a lone French Trade Cutter. In a battle lasting 30 minutes, I finally sank her. Coming out of the battle I was again surrounded by French naval vessels, so I turned North to Cuba (Guantanamo Bay to by exact) where I saw a lone Spanish Cutter. As the battle commenced, I saw my lone Spaniard accompanied by two other Spanish ships. Two cutters something else small. I started firing upon all of the vessels, but they were well organized and only out of luck, was I able to break one ship off from the others and I sank her. By that time the other two Spaniards really wanted to sink me. With 1/3 of my cannons gone on both sides I then ran for it, leaving the fight when I was ahead. I continued onto the Port of Baracoa and saw that it was a Spanish port, so I returned to Jeremie on Haiti, where I repaired my ship. Having only 300 gold before the battles, I now have over 22 K gold and I have been promoted from Midshipmen to Ensign.

Sincerely, and with all due respect,

  10. I am running windows 10 on my iMac and I can't load images for the profile or the forum.

But, strangely . . . I was able to upload an image for my profile in the Sea Lords Virtual Fleet site.

Why does it work there and not here on the naval action forum?

The sites are so similar looking, they must have been made by the same design team.

    Cheers,

    Max
