Discussion - Player ship selection 1st Half 2016

That's ok. Some of the Chapman designs in the game currently never actually existed. There is no prior requirement that a ship has actually been built to potentially be included.

Need to be careful here, as although Chapman produced very good designs, there were other paper plans that failed on paper (were flawed, not practical, etc.). I don't think you do a nation service (capture the character of its navy) by choosing to model designs that never existed, and maybe never could of existed.

    Have you seen that ?     Lovely colored plan.

Just a marginal issue : is she swedish or Russian ? Or swedish then captured by the Russain ? Or the reverse ? Or are they duplicates ?

Venus

Swedish 44-gun frigate (1783)

Note: this coloured plan might not be Venus, despite saying so.

6G8P9Mv.jpgPlans from RMG. There are also plans from the russian and swedish archives, almost identical.

The NMM plan shows the 'real' Venus. It´s swedish, got captured by the russians then sold to Sicily.

The coloured plan is dated 1789 and signed by Chapman´s brother and is just 'a' Venus. It has a slightly different hull shape, is longer (160 swedish feet vs 156) and is pierced for 28 guns (Bellona-class 26)

”Wasa” class ship of the line, another Chapman's incredible design, greatly appreciated by the Russians.  :P

She had a rich military career, fought in many battles, including the Battle of Athos. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Athos )

@ LeBoiteux

Thanks for posting the Austro-Hungarian frigates. Actually, the first and third pictures are from Robert L. Dauber, Die Marine des Johanniter-Malteser-Ritter-Ordens. 500 Jahre Seekrieg zur Verteidigung Europas, Graz 1989, p.261. I've not seen Körner's monograph myself but I assume that those illustrations have been included (the third one has been included for sure as can be gleaned from the book cover...)

hehe

Rhett-vee-sahn

The Swedes have this great way of making the "R" sound. Like the Spanish (and Norwegians... hey!) they roll the sound off at the tip of their tongue just behind their top front teeth. Only slower, slurrier and more deliberate that Spanish (and Norwegian). It truly is something.

Listen to Joakim sing "regnen" (the rains) at 0:38:

Fun fact:

(some) Young people in Germany take Swedish in University with the main motivation of being able to read Kent lyrics in the original language. I have it on good authority from people in academia.

Does anyone know her building date ? Do you think she's within timeframe ? It seems to be...
Any other information about her ?

Aurora

Dutch 5th Rate - 32-guns

Where to start,

It is mentioned in what year she was build on her plans.

'Gebouwdt in Vlissingen 1804' (gotta love the old dutch  ), which translates to 'Build in Vlissingen in 1804'.

Onto her history is where it gets somewhat hard to retrace her steps. Frankly i don't have the time atm, so ill do the brief version.

What is recorded that she was build by P. Schuijt Jr and was sold in 1818.

A few years into her service she would be drydocked and renamed 'Vriesland'. The exact date of this i am note sure of.

What i can tell you, and show you, is the drawings of the Vriesland, which should show an exact image. This is the Vriesland as archived in the Dutch National Archives.

(It even has the aurora mark on the bottom :))

With that said, there is already a topic about her somewhere in the shipyard section, yet she has not been posted in the player proposal thread.

EDIT:

There is also a ship called 'Dageraat', build in 1808. She also would later be drydocked and renamed Aurora. She would remain in survice until 1824.

She was build on the same design, here are some images.

+1. Thx for the information. She has to be added to the player proposal thread !!!!

That said, there are 2 threads about her :

And I've only seen the wrong empty one, the second one... otherwise I wouldn't ask. :)

I know that the british ships are discouraged, but for the sake of having more smaller ships like sloops(cutters. I think its worth posting anyway.

8 gun Sharke. This used to be one of my favorite ships in POTBS. More pictures at: http://www.modelships.de/Kutter_Sharke/Photos-Cutter-Sharke.htm

Mediator (1745)

British example...

I am sure one can find plans from other countries...

Spanish  MONTAÑES S.O.L  74 canons

montanez_zps594sdeli.jpg

I have the whole information about this ship, plans above are not from a model, but from the original drawings from D. Julian Martin de Retamosa the naval architect who built her.

What about that ?
