I don't recall anyone claiming Treasure Island or Black Sails to be fiction, or it being aired on the History channel.

Also Black Sails is set 10 years prior to the events of Treasure Island.

[,,,] is set around the start of the 18th century, it is considered a prequel to 'Treasure Island' and has a cast containing lots of historical characters (John Silver, Flint, Lady Hamilton etc).

This is what I was refering to, not the OP so I can understand the confusion (as well as the fact that I believe you meant to say "No one is claiming Black Sails is non-fiction...")

Emma, Lady Hamilton. 1765-1815  Serial Mistress. Noted beauty and artists muse. Wife of Sir William Hamilton and the great love of the life of Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, who set up home with her at Merton Place, and the mother of his only known offspring, Horatia.

As for this, I was confused at first and rightly so, I know if the Nelsonian Lady Emma, however this one appears to strain the time difference: Treasure Island claims to take place during the early-middle 18th century (~1744 if I remember correctly)

If the work is a prequel then I simply need to know how much later it is. If the character depicted is a rather young child Emma, then it may work. However if the character is portrayed  as a woman (which I assume it does) then I would argue that this Emma and Nelson's Lady Emma are not the same.

This is just me though, again, knowing the time of Black sails would probably make things clearer.

Anyone been following season 2 so far?

That twist in episode 5 tho O_O I did not see that coming a mile away. A lot of ppl are pissed but I was pleased to actually be surprised by a tv series xP

Really bold move, then the end when it throws you right from this really peaceful moment into surprise action... really good stuff, good writing, good screenplay. That may have been the peak though episode 6 kinda lowered in the conflict and intensity at least to me...

They could've waited till later for the big reveal I kinda feel like they played all the big cards in the first half of Season 2 now there's just a steady downhill resolution. But yeah, I like the series didn't as much when I first started watching was just a ton of fan service and almost no... well, naval action :P

I've watched 2 episodes and gotta say its pretty much of a soap opera.  Not a lot of naval action or seamanship so far.

Does it get better?

if you have only watched two episodes, you really haven't given it a chance.

yes it gets better and season two has been great.

Good to know.  I've watched 4 episodes now and I'm getting pretty bored waiting for something to happen.  I keep telling myself that the show is developing the plot and building the characters.

Thanks for the encouragement.  Was starting to think I have been just wasting time.

E6 was Jack's moment in the sun. People keep underestimating that guy to their peril, even though he can't fight worth shit.

I think they handled the reveal perfectly. Imagine if they'd left it till the end of this season, and viewers had all off season to stew about that develpment... more probably wouldn't come back after they'd thought about it that long, and decided suddenly it wasn't the type of show they wanted to watch anymore.

I held my judgement till E06, becasue I wanted to see how they were going to proceed in the aftermath, which I feel they handled just right by letting it be. They accomplished their backstory, established motivation, and the conservative viewership can now breathe easy they wont likely have to wait another year to find out if they are going to be subjected to more... umm... funny business.

Folks main gripe with Black Sails I imagine is that same as it was for people who didn't get Deadwood. Because it was a Western, they were probably hoping to see alot of gunfights and Indians and all that nonsense. The main gripe with Black Sails along similar lines is that the action is spare, or at least not what they expected. There's no blowing ships out of the water every week, no Kraken, no pirates running rampant in the streets like PotC, sacking Panama every other week and burying gold in the sand. BS does have action, it just doesn't seem to be the over the top type that some people are hoping for, though it certainly does have its moments. Truth is its more of a period drama with big tits, which once people adjust their expectations accordingly turns out to be a very well crafted one.

don't forget Blackbeard ;)

i always explained it to my friends as GoT but for the age of sail, but without the supernatural element.

it's got that same amount of grit, sex, and action when needed. not just gratuitous violence to keep the masses happy.

I was disappointed with E6. Like, the fight at the beginning between the two biggest rival main characters just kind of had them rolling around and then ended within half a minute... that should have been the most epic climactic brawl yet, all over the building, out in the street, picking random weapons up, beating the ever-loving shit out of each other until both are too weak to even stand up.. THEN proceed with the story. Like when Vane fought that huge guy toward the end of Season 1, that fight was badass.

And Jack... they haven't really done anything to tie his story in with the main conflict he's just out trying to make it for himself he doesn't have any link to the Spanish gold yet or the big plots determining Nassau's fate so it's like why should I care about this guy?

I don't know, I felt at the edge of my seat all the way up to the end of E5 and then all the conflict that had been building up just dropped itself.

Not really looking for violence.  Street fights, murders, porn, ...

I was hoping for some naval action.  Sailing.  Ships.  The first 5 minutes was really cool ...  is there some of that later?

Perhaps in episode 5 (Season 1).  I think I'll watch and see. :)

EDIT:  Saw some good sea scenes in episode 5. Enough time at sea to keep watching a couple more shows ...

they are slowly getting to that with Anne and the Brothel, i think that will be Anne's way back onto the ship. or as Devante said, a ship of her own then Jack and Anne will have to sort out their shit on the sea

I think it's a good show though I would like to see more combat or even sailing scenes. I like that they are mixing in some historical fact and characters though I don't know why the writers can't see that the true history was as, if not more, compelling than the added fiction that they dress it up with:

 - Benjamin Hornigold was one of four pirates who "ruled" over New Providence and lived in the abandoned English fort overlooking Nassau Harbour. Though Hornigold's first in command was Edward Teach(Black Beard) who was also one of the other pirates in charge but he is nowhere to be seen in the show. The other two ruling pirates were Josiah Burgess and Henry Jennings.

 - Charles Vane supposedly while serving under Henry Jennings raided Spanish survivors on a beach after their treasure ship was sunk just off shore by a storm. Sounds familiar to the hunt for the Urca de Lima in the show though it is Jennings/Vane and not Flint who is after the gold and also this happened near the start of Vane's pirating career while the show seems to be near the height of his career. Much like the show Vane did take over Nassau and the fort in 1718. He captained a ship named The Ranger.

 - Calico Jack Rackham did serve as quartermaster on Charles Vane's ship but unlike the show it wasn't until sometime after this that he met Anne Bonny. He became a captain for the first time when Vane's crew took a vote of no confidence which changed the captaincy from Vane to Rackham. In the show they say Rackham knew Bonny from the time she was 16 though they seem to be combining Rackham with Bonny's husband and small time pirate, James Bonny. Rackham didn't meet Bonny until she was much older.

 - Anne Bonny did serve as a pirate on Jack Rackham's ship. She did have a connection to a brothel in Nassau though it was owned by a friend. She did supposedly have a lesbian relationship but it was with another female pirate, Mary Read who also served on Rackham's ship with rumours of a love triangle between the three.

 - Edward Low was a sadistic pirate captain of the time but did not die by the hand of Charles Vane in Nassau.

 - Lady Hamilton is also a historical character mentioned earlier in this thread though I can't find any mention of her ever being to the Caribbean.

I think that about covers the non-fictional characters in the show.

Holy hell that was a talky-talky episode. This show needs to spread out its transitions a bit. You can practically see the showrunner's whiteboard with the season plans: "Episode 7: all loyalties shift"

The ending shot was also an enormous 'so what.' Psychic buggy passengers.

e08 though.

Aaaaw yeah, time for Vane to start kicking some ass!

Vane's already badass. He's so badass, he doesn't need a ship to be a pirate. Leaves Low's ship in the harbor and he and his men swim to Charleston, and still get there ahead of Flint.
