I see.  Then the courses are reefed also?

@Angus MacDuff If you look closely you can see the bunched sailcloth which could indicate a reef taken in the fore course. Main course is furled. They may also be trimming the forecourse loosely to spill wind which could also account for the higher clew and billowing foot. 

I sailed on a replica of an early 17th century ship (1625) , Kalmar Nyckel. No reefing in the early 17th century. For the courses you had a "bonnet" attached to the bottom of the course which could be removed.
