Often I'm sitting here in the office and "Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul... " (Melville, Moby Dick), I visit this thread. It's just beautiful. Thanks a lot!
Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette is only a passenger of l'Hermione. L'Hermione to a whole other life than that shared with the Marquis. It's a story, but La Fayette is just a comma in the history of l'Hermione. Just a passenger.
L'Hermione made a small war campaign in the Bay of Biscay and going up the Channel where she chased the corsairs in 1779.
Then she went off to fight for two years (1780/1782) in the United States (La Fayette took advantage of her departure), she returned to France in 1782 and left to join her station in the Indian Ocean in the squadron of Admiral Suffren in 1783. She escorts a convoy while going there. She stays there for a few months.
She did a lot of things in Europe afterwards and she grounded on the plateau du Four (France) by the malevolence of the pilot.
