End of navigation 2019 in Normandy.

L'Hermione, facing Fort Boyard, arrived yesterday afternoon. For the 30th anniversary of the Fort Boyard game show, the frigate fired 30 cannon shots.
It is currently anchored in the bay of Aix. Return to the port at Rochefort by going up the Charente river on Friday 05 July.

Historically, the gun ports would have wooden covers but are stored inside. This is typical for French (and Spanish) naval vessels of the time .. for larger caliber guns on lower gun decks on two or three deckers you have permanent external lids. If you look closely at the game model of the Océan you can see this.

On the replica it looks like they sensibly use something that seals a lot better than the originals would have..

My guess is running them out is probably the safest storage position, also less clutter inside (though my guess is the current ship and its comparably small crew could get away without it).

And it makes you look butch when you enter port.

For the frigates, the port lids are late in France. Only the bow-chase area is closed by a port lids. But he's not armed by a cannon (under the cat head).

But when there is a big swell, the gun-ports are closed with sham ports.

It is historic, but so is today's replica.
