'Agamemnon' English 3-Rate 1781 (With Plans)

Recommended Posts

HMS Agamemnon

HMS Agamemnon was a 64-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy. She saw service in the American Revolutionary, French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and fought in many of the major naval battles of those conflicts. She is remembered as being Nelson's favorite ship, and was named after the mythical ancient Greek king Agamemnon, being the first ship of the Royal Navy to bear the name.

The future Lord Nelson served as Agamemnon 's captain from January 1793 for 3 years and 3 months, during which time she saw considerable service in the Mediterranean. After Nelson's departure, she was involved in the infamous 1797 mutinies at Spithead and the Nore, and in 1801 was present at the first Battle of Copenhagen, but ran aground before being able to enter the action.

Despite Nelson's fondness for the ship, she was frequently in need of repair and refitting, and would likely have been hulked or scrapped in 1802 had war with France not recommenced. She fought at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, as part of Nelson's weather column, where she forced the surrender of the Spanish four-decker Santísima Trinidad. Agamemnon 's later career was served in South American waters off Brazil.

Her oft worn-out and poor condition contributed to her being wrecked when in June 1809 she grounded on an uncharted shoal in the mouth of the River Plate, whilst seeking shelter with the rest of her squadron from a storm. All hands and most of the ship's stores were saved, but the condition of the ship's timbers made it impossible to free the ship; her captain was cleared of responsibility for the ship's loss thanks to documents detailing her defects. Recently, the wreck of Agamemnon has been located, and several artifacts have been recovered, including one of her cannons.

We do need a 64 in the game. They were thought large enough to be in the line of battle throughout the Napoleonic wars. They were also used as squadron flagships for foreign stations like North America (HMS Africa) leading squadrons of frigates on blockade duty, etc.

There is an excellent book on the HMS Agamemnon called "Nelson's Favorite":

From what I have read they were considered 3rd rate ships even though they were being replaced by the 74s.

We do have a 64-gun ship incoming soon, the Ingermanland however, the Ingermanland is relatively lightly armed with only 24lb guns on the lower gun deck and 12lb guns everywhere else.   Therefore a 64-Gun ship with up to 32lb guns would be a nice addition and I think the Agamemnon did have 32lb guns.  Correct me if I am wrong.

Edit:  nope, it appears I am wrong.  24lb gun lower and 18lb guns upper.

It was in the player-selected ship poll for 2015 but finished in the middle of the pack.

You'll have to wait for the next poll to come around unless the developers take it upon themselves to make it. They have quite a few in the pipeline already though.

The player-selected polls have been started at the beginning of the year for the past 2 years. This is how the Santisima and Ontario/Snow ended up in the game this past Fall.

This year the initial poll was started at the end of December and then narrowed down to a final poll in January. We probably won't see these ships in game until the end of 2015.

The developers also have their own core of ships they are building to flesh out the lineup.

Yeah I gather they are working on about a dozen that they are working on that we don't even really know anything about and this is above and beyond the ones we are expecting to enter the game shortly or were part of the player's choice poll.
