I assume there's a way with UABEA if you properly handle your assets, but the way I can say is you can just manually load it via code, apply a copy of a ship's material and change its textures to textures you load, instantiate all the helper objects the game needs and the various components the gameobjects do, then disable it and put it in the store of other hull objects and add the data necessary to the parts store in GameData, It will definitely take work (and some exploring) but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Really wish they would of just integrated some sort of easy modding (like how bethesda games have their creation / construction kits) but ah well, what can ya do.
