x2 Queries: 'What is long range' and a research related question

Hi there,

Couple of questions for those in the know:

 

1) What does 'long range' refer to in terms of stereoscopic range finders? Is this an arbitrary range (e.g, 'beyond 20,000 yards') or is it relative to the gun (e.g, anything between the guns maximum range and 75% of max range)?

2) Regarding research during the campaign: When researching and a technology that has not yet been identified (e.g. 'armour quality', but without a specific tech identified, e.g. 'Harvey armour') does boosting that research make it quicker to get to the point where a tech has been identified and a time becomes associated with the delivery of the tech? Or does boosting an unidentified tech simply do nothing?

2) Yes, boosting techs will speed up research even if the tech has not been identified yet.
