'Unknown' Spanish 4th rate, 50 guns (With plans)

Now this i think will be a favourite ship.

Potentially a 'first SOL' anyone will sail :)

I'm already informing my carpenter the style of furniture I wish in the Great cabin :)

I do love it and I am willing to donate money for this ship development any time.

I vote this one up.  Love 4th rates despite the fact historically they were considered under gunned for the line and not as good a Frigates for everything else.

This is the 'thing'. Despite the Dev's being very clear about the time period the game is set in, too many people are just thinking late 18th early 19th century (eg Ships at Trafalgar).

These 4th rate SOL ships WERE line ships until the 1760-70's onward or there abouts and if present and needed would still be ordered to take their place in the line of battle throughout the game time period.

Agree with you here.  Way too many people don't want to acknowledge that older ships will have a place in this game and are trying to push the late 1700s - 1800s time frame on all of us.  Thank god we have the Ingermanland on its way with its 1715 launch to finally make the point that older ships belong too.

Doesn't change the fact that the smaller 4th rates probably won't have the speed or maneuverability of a similar gunned modern Frigate or in the case of some of the older 4th rates, might even have less firepower.   Still they are going to be great additions and something I would sail often.

I don't really have anything against the older ships, just not sure how they will compete with the Napoleonic ships that they will have to face.

The later 1750s onwards ships like this very beautiful 50 gun 4th rate don't quite have the same problem.

Compared to 3rd rates with either twenty-six 24 pdrs and twenty-six 18 pdrs (64 gun) or twenty-eight 32 pdrs and twenty-eight 18 pdrs (74 gun), a 50 gun ship with just twenty-two 24 pdrs and twenty-two 12 pdrs is rather smaller and more lightly armed than is ideal for the line of battle, in particular having only one deck of heavy guns is a significant downside (not to say you wouldn't use a 4th rate if you had it in your fleet, just probably stick it at the back where its not going to be shot at by 1st rates).

But a 50 gun ship with 24 and 12 pdrs still significantly outguns all but the largest (and rarest) frigates, even those it can fight on reasonably even terms, and it doesn't cost much more than a 38 gun 5th rate frigate to build or crew (unlike certain super-frigates I could name that skipped all the way over 4th rate prices and ended up as "more expensive than most 3rd rates"). So yeah, not as fast a frigate or even a typical 3rd rate, but with the firepower, low cost and relatively shallow draught they would be excellent convoy escorts or flagships for distant stations where SoL are rare.

Btw, Ingermanland is because of her age more like a cross between a small 3rd rate and a large 4th rate than a true 3rd rate, she does have 64 guns but they are only 24 and 12 pdrs like a later 4th rate and her dimensions are about the same as Leopard/Leander or this Spanish ship, meaning rather overgunned for her size.

I'll gladly sail a fourth over anything larger. I hate them big tubs.

Agree.  I like the Bellona so a 3rd rate still works for me, but absolutely hate sailing the Victory or Santi so doubt I will ever invest in a 2nd or 1st rate in Open World unless I am Captaining it at my player societies request.

Then when you consider cost like someone else pointed out, a good old 4th rate is likely to give you damn good bang for the buck. Cheaper than a Super Frigate while probably bringing similar firepower and durability at the expense being slower and maybe a bit less agile.  Yeah that works for me.

Do we have more intel on that ship?

Guns, their size, crew and the like?

Maybe a ship of her class?

the plans say "sistema-a-la-inglesa"

Id like to know.. I am scratching the hull atm and this would be perfect material for my holidays.. (if not for the game, then for myself)

1/2 to 1 hour work:

roughly: 'built in the english fashion'.

I think this refers to Jorge Juan, who designed his ships according to english methods of the 1740s/1750s. Could be the 'Nuestra Señora del Rosario'.

Too bad the constitiuton and to a lesser degree the trinc make all those beautiful 50's,54's and 64's more or less obsolete :( ,because they easily outsail those smaller SoL's  and the DPS and armor is comparable or better .

they should either nerf them or severely limit their availebility ,otherwise all the smaller SoL's will not be used .
