Fuel Efficiency In campaign

Obviously Fuel is going to play a factor in campaign. But how much of a factor can we make it in the design of our ships? @CapnAvont1015 Had a cool Idea so I thought I would make a thread with a couple ideas I had.

So obviously at the moment we have a slider bar for ship range. This provides to my understanding just a basic range the a ship type would travel while just taking away from the available tonnage we can work on with the ship. But maybe we can add another feature to the game. My idea would be fuel burn.

So a ship could decrease fuel burn by

  • Upgrading funnels to have more/more efficient funnels?
  • Upgrading fuel used from i.e coal to oil
  • Upgrading the physical engines
  • Upgrading the shaft
  • Double/triple bottoms and SPS @Shiki

Right now there is an funnel efficiency option my question is does this add to what would be fuel burn on the ship reducing its effective range in game?

A ship could increase fuel burn by

  • Having more tonnage
  • Having a ship be off balanced in any direction
  • Types of ship burn fuel faster during wartime? I.e. DD's and CL's would be escorting against subs and maybe driving off would be raiders without queuing a battle

Also some ideas that could be added into the game. Say you don't properly deal with a blockade on your country and or a region maybe that could limit the operational range of ships in that theater. Maybe you could then have the option of using a lower quality fuel but could cause more operational failures or could actually be seen in battle as the ships maintaining a slower top speed.

Any ideas please comment.

We could have companies and different types of boilers as you had vertical and horizontal that were thinner and took up less room. Think you had cylinderical as well.

Companies would make certain types of boilers and at different qualities (like in real life) and you would end choosing the best one(s) for that situation or ship in-general.

Plus the shape and size of boilers would also effect how cost efficient and also how powerful and easy they are to maintain as well.

And other stuff i can't remember as well.

Also fuel burn can be affected by the quality and type of fuel, as coal and oil are kinda vague, you had coal like lignite and anthracite along with bituminous coal and coke. Maybe even have peat in there as it was a precussor to coal as well.

So the different types of coal along with the quality of it along with oil as well can effect how well engines work and how much they can burn through it as well.

Ok so here's how fuel will be for each ship class:

  • TBs: burn the least amount of fuel but doesn't have much fuel space.
  • DDs: burns almost the same amount of fuel as TBs but has more fuel storage.
  • CLs: burns a bit more fuel than DDs but has the option to have more fuel storage.
  • CAs: burns a lot more fuel than CLs and DDs due to its armor but can differ due to the weight of the armor.
  • BCs: burns a lot more than CAs but less than BBs due to size and armor weight.
  • BBs: burns the most fuel but can carry the most fuel tanks out of all the ships.

I was assuming at the start of a war a country would try to use the best quality fuel available in this game. That's kinda why I added that blockaded part

See I had lighter ships burning more fuel because they would move more erratically i.e. burning more fuel in situations such as convoy escorts.

True, but i think different coal types should come into play and have different effects on engines and their performance as they did in real life and some coal also being worthy as primitive forms of protection as well.

Blockades and sanctions could stem or prevent high quality coal or large quantities of coal from getting through and that will have an effect on engine performance as a whole.

Also means you would need to invade certain places to get better coal and this would open up to interesting forms of gameplay.

Even more so if there was randomiser for every game as a toggable option.

I use coal as it's the best example atm.

I'd like lower quality fuel to cause more mechanical issues if you choose to use it. Maybe it lowers your in game upkeep costs? But has the downside of more repairs I.e. ship not being propped into a battle scenario and instead being in port for maintenance.

Also it takes longer for the fuel to actually work as it doesn't burn as efficiently either. It will be cheaper, but worse to use.
