Plans for Reputation and Sailing changes

Captains

Here is brief information on the next large update. 

  • DELAYED Karma/Reputation system update
    • The goal is simple - to provide some form of neutrality and reduce amount of negative exploits that happen because of ability to join battles for other nations
    • Implementation
      • Positive reputation
        • All players will start with positive reputation. They will be able to enter all ports on the map in any ship, will be able to build buildings and outposts. They will be allowed to participate in honorable activities like defend themselves from any attack, or join port battles for their nation to defend it - honorable activities. Only defensive activities or port battles are allowed for such players.
        • In short: players who play defensively will experience gameplay similar to the Peace server.
      • Standard (current reputation)
        • If they attack the enemy player of another nation the reputation with that nation will drop to standard (combat rep) and the player will experience the game the way it plays now on the War server. He will be able to enter enemy ports in a trading ship, but won't be able to craft there. 
      • Negative reputation (false flag karma)
        • If the player joins the battle for ANOTHER nation for example against another nation (under false flag) - his reputaiton against that nation drops to negative. 
        • Example: British player joins the battle on the Swedish side against Spain. His reputation against spain will drop and he will no longer be able to join Spanish side in the future, and potentially won't be able to use spanish ports in any vessel.
      • 3 reputation levels will be shown on map. Map will have a button allowing player to reset his reputation to positive by paying a very large sum of doubloons.
    • This feature will allow true neutral trader crafter gameplay, will bring persistence to some decisions and will reduce alts or friends abuse in battles. 
  • Battle sails and wind mechanics update
    • Wind works on sails proportionally and is not linear. First 100m of sail area has most effect on speed. Last 100 m of sail area has least effect on speed. 
    • It works the same with damage - losing first 50% of sails will NOT lose you 50% of speed.
    • This will make battle sails work historically allowing players to retain speed and maneuverability.  
    • It is time to make the sailing model even better by adding this into the game. 
  • Graphical update for some national towns
    • Several national towns will receive a visual overhaul. 
  • Battle Flags. 
    • Long overdue flags will be added to the game.

Chance of wind shadow just increased by 30% from 3%. Time to practice station keeping with @Charles Caldwell

Update

Test bed will be set up soon for testing

  • Wind shadow experiment
  • New penetration and gun rebalance
  • New more realistic wind power mechanics
  • All other things with the exception of reputation

The "Missing Link" patch announcement will be provided later today or tomorrow.

Reputation systems delayed in full and might only appear in a cut form after the patch, after deeper consideration of their effect on the game.

This will be a huge game changer. Biggest update to OW since 1.0, surely.
Maybe an influx of the casual player will make a return.

I dont see how? by doing this you are encouraging players to buy even more alts so they can join battles vs certain nations, while others cant help

I could imagine ppl having dedicated anti nation xy accounts ready in freeports just to be a d*ck

but will have to find out I suppose

that´s a welcome and very interesting patch you´re planning! personally I do not like the opportunity to pay for a better reputation. how will privateer-fleets behave towards

a player with positive reputation? will players be able to change in a nation where they got a negative reputation?

Which flags will be added to the game? Flags to set a portbattle? national flags? Signal flags?

@admin i can all ready see one possibles exploits 

let’s say your are a hunter you bring you alt inside a fir fir ship like a trinco so you can have some br to tag and second move you jump in with your main so you can be a-t-il karma positive => at the end of the battle you go to the enemy port to repair 

In the same way a alt can use this system to stock rep (open a outpost and craft/ buy rep) for his main account and trade in open world I’m thinking in front of Baracoa  

 

 ps the crafter players in war server have no use since you cannot profits of the port bonus

Outcome: Russians will be attacked even less OW because everyone wants ship building at VC or New Orleans and easy trade runs in the Gulf.

You will be joining a battle, your karma will drop for the nation you joined battle against. You won't be able to enter port of that nation.

Your alt attacked, hence karma will drop as well.

Correct me if I’m wrong but if your alt is the same nation as your main it works?

With this new sail mechanic, I can see the opposite of the Devs.  Trading will come to a halt, because it will be much easier to catch traders leaving ports, by taking their sails down to 50% and sink them.

Just more sunken cost to them. Let those with wallets optimize the fun out of it.
 Now it makes sense to open up 2-3 characters per server per account.
because those types of alts can't be played at the same time.

Yep. You are fighting for the same clan/nation/flag.

Works for 1 account, works for 20.

You will block access to enemy port to the attacker player though.

The game may eventually need mechanics that make the PVP not open, but is generally PVE, until conditions of instability are created in an area and it is within a PVP zone, which, players who do not want to do PVP, can avoid, perhaps, dare to enter (whether for reasons that they need something from that port , or because they want to try to see how the PVP is going) or give players free access to PVP, perhaps, without in those areas being able to lose status with the nations that players attack in those areas attack.

Perhaps this way, instead of having two servers and players spread across the two, everyone could feel comfortable in one.

Another useful thing, would be to increase the speed on the general map even more, reducing travel times, because there are players, who can't spend half an hour or even an hour, to get into a couple of fights.

А что на счет пиратов? Будет ли для них реализована данная механика по другому?  То есть как пират мог бы заходить во все сражения не зависимо от той нации с кем хорошие отношения. И что на счет патрульных NPC  возле столиц? Если у меня положительные отношения с этой нацией она не будет меня трогать?

Is't that a good thing? more accounts +more DLC = more money for game developing.

After reading and translating, I see no reason to reset reputation.

I can enter to any port on trader ship. I never build shipyard in port where i can't get port bonuses.

Will player with positive reputation can place contract or make outpost?

How quickly will reputation changes start working (after maintenance)?

Reputation mechanics do not affect NPCs.. You are free to attack any NPC still and Patrols will still chase you even if you are neutral.

in the case of port battles for remaining a positive reputation, there are no difference between attacker and defender side? I mean, joining in PBs if your faction is the attacker still remain your reputation as positive? or only if your faction is defender?

port battles are honorable activity and neutral reputation will not be affected by port battles.
