EA impressions (v0.6.49 rev.34301 BETA)

I did play original UC: Gettysburg for a short while, never played Civil War. With that said, here's my impressions of UA:AoS. Also - I'm just about to start the section where there's the American ship defenseless in shallow waters, so I'm not that far into the campaign.

The good:

- limited game scope with focus on mechanics; it's mostly 1 kind of ship shooting at the same type of ship, 1 type of infantry shooting at the same type of infantry. I like it, it's easy to focus on the strategy

- Land AI: whoah. I've repeated the US campaign 3 times already (some using vanilla, some using earlier beta) and no battle's been the same. The AI seems VERY competent and will react to your actions. I actually completely lost the bunker hill land battle in my current campaign.

- management: I actually started winning once I started to specialise my ships and land units, switching officers, weapons, cannons and making sure the crew/soldiers don't lose their bonuses due to rookies

- scale: I actually like that the land battles aren't super big sometimes. The smaller skirmishes are fun :)

- The game is hard. I like it. Makes me think and consider all options before sailing/marching out.

- Amphibious invasions are FUN. I wonder if there would be any where you land, e.g. take a fort, and then defend it from another invasion? Or you have to defend 2 points? Or you land, capture something and then have to evacuate/redeploy?

The bad:

- limited game scope: well, yes. I was kinda expecting cavalry to show up as well as some other types of arty?

- Naval battles seem kinda random. It took me lots of time to understand that it doesn't usually make sense to shell the enemy ships from distance since your cannon shots will lose velocity anyway.

- Campaign setup: you don't know that retreating from a battle is also an option to conserve your ships. I'm not even sure if that's possible in a land battle?

- Land weapon management gets tedious once you have lots of different rifles available.

- Mortars are super slow and have low range, I tried them once - in a defense mission! - and they took AGES to get in position. It's a pity since they're super effective

The neutral/the confusion:

- I don't understand why arty sometimes has horses to pull it and sometimes it doesn't. The one with horses seems way more useful since it can reposition, um, at all :D

- I'm not sure about the replayability for land battles. Sea battles are fine since a sea is a sea is a sea, but while I love the land battles, they kinda get stale, which is a pity.

But all in all, keep on trucking game devs! I clocked uuuhh 25 hours in a week since I got this game? It's been a blast! I believe I'll continue the US campaign but wait for some updates to start the Brit campaign.

Select the units and click off the edge of the map and they will attempt to retreat off it. I think all the land battles currently in the game will give you defeat if you withdraw off the map though.

Many battles give you either infinite time or at least more than enough. It's worth waiting for them to arrive in my opinion, but I'm more than happy to just watch my artillery do all the work in every battle if allowed.

My POV, Although, I think some, not all of the land battles are tough regardless of difficulty but with the wonderful feature that is in this game compared against UGCW, is that we get all the time we need, day and night, to try and get the job done. I also enjoy that we get an option to finish or continue the battle. There are so many things that can happen in a land battle and even in a sea battle that having time is a wonderful thing.

I can't tell you how many times, just when I started to have a little fun in a battle in UGCW, it would switch to another phase or end the battle. This new game is happily not that. Don't, get me wrong on UGCW, by looking at my steam hours up to over 2,500 hours of play over the few years, so I did get my money's worth, thank you, Darth and the Modder Panda!

The land battles, units can move all over the place and we end up in so many fights across the map, and with good ole farter time can be on our side.Yes, when you have Arty, wait for it for the AI always has it, which they use it against me effectively so it's sheer pleasure and absolute fun using my Arty or what I call, the AI resources against them. The AI right from the start of the campaign have it and we get pounded by it but, when we take it and use it against them it's so rewarding. We don't get Arty until we are way into the campaign and have the tech which is fine for in any battle we can capture it and use it in that battle and that can help to turn the tide.

This game is great, thanks a lot for making it and please keep up the good work with updating and fixing it and when you are done with it, go ahead and make some DLC's of different campaigns. You have all the resources and assets so you should be able use some of them and maybe create some new content in new DLC's. Other game makers made a base game, gave you a few campaigns with it, then added more of them later and made new content and keep it going for a while and I think you could do that too. I know this is still EA, just saying for later as for DLC!

Mortars are ok you just have to protect them and keep them close but I'd rather have Arty.
