Ideas for customisation
Only available to appropriate ships

Use a format like...

Name of Upgrade/Module:

Positive traits:

Negative traits:

How you see it used/Its Gameplay focus:

A list of random ideas I would like to see in game. Most poorly explained at present.

* Coppered Bottom
* Splinter netting
* Weapon types of course - long, carronade, mortar, unicorne, great guns, rockets.
* Figurehead choices
* Hull paint - Bow, Stern, starboard, port etc - historical colours only and no sail colours unless they can be proven.
* Extra Sails types
* Storm Sails, royals, stun sails, stay sails etc
* Sail adjustment to give more spread for the sails
* Sliding doors the full width of the sailroom for easy change of sails.
* Secondary sails in case of damage
* Spare Spars
* Ships Boats
* Spare Rudder
* Front and rear chaser can be moved from side to front and rear
* Iron Water tanks
* Thicker mast for carrying more sail without the risk of breakage
* Pennants - I know this is planned already
* Customer Flags - Historical only - I don't want to see clan names on flags as clan names are often silly. Perhaps as part of a normal flag with letters changed  would be fine.
* Drag sail for slowing the ship down while at full sail to appear at top speed
* Signal Flares
* Lanterns
* Extra Gun Ports cut
* Criss Cross planking - stronger construction. Prevents hogging and sagging
* Depth Sound rope
* Speed LOG in knots - allows you to determine your speed by deploying the log.Requires the game to start with no speed indicator at all.
* Sail spankers (not sure what they are called) - the little bits of cloth on sails that makes te sound when their is no wind or the wind is failing.
* Signal Flags - Give the ability to signal using flags - this would just be a lot of fun especially for clans who want to do things properly
* Extra specialists - sailmaker, ropemaker, carpenter, Caulker, cooper, armourer, purser etc
* Double Ships wheel - she may sturn the rudder a bit faster and hold better in storms
* Prussian, Russian or American Timber
* Light timber\heavy timer
* Clean paint work - paint should get dirty over time?
* Decorative stern gallery or balcony.
* Thicker planking
* Better nails - some nails I believe became part of the wood through chemical reaction?
* Stronger Standing rigging?
* Taller masts
* Batter bilge pump
* Music
* Shanties - not available in the british navy - silent service
* Timber Seasoning - not shortcutted or green timber or from old ships
* Extra Soldiers - not marines
* Scurbotics - less sick men for long journeys - keeps crew at full comkpliment longer
* Sick Berth - introduced 1801
* Air pipes - for lower decks
* Move magazine from mast and lighting conductors (a common individual captains modification) - prevents lightning blowing up ship - useless in game but nice to have
* James Walkers patent water tight powder barrels (copper lined) - flash and damp resistant
* Lead lined barrels by congreve for powder stowage
* Fulton Torpedoes
* Improved Anchors - there were many prototypes and different anchors one could buy
* improved boat stowage\Replacement ships boats with better ones
* makeshift spar deck
* panking over hatches
* repostioning of ladders or ladders with hinges for easy replacement or removal during battle
* Better storage
* Adjusted  balance - stones in the bottom and type - cannot recall what this is called
* Carronades on shifting mountings - rearmost ones in broadside
* Wooden sweep or arc under each gunport to facilitate training the gun forward or after bearings
* Remove the front extentions, horns from the gun carriages
* Razee the ship!!!
* Mast rake adjustments
* New sail dimensions
* Double blocks for the main braces
* Waist Guns
* Outfit for fireship - when you don't want the ship anymore

Nice list but think how long it takes for a small group of devs to get 1 thing of this list to work in the game.
I think there are really good ideas but let them make a solid open world with navy, trade and pirates and then think of the gimmicks.

Excample:

  • Music - copyright... ok they can use free music but there are not many good, but you can turn on what you want on your own computer / stereo
  • Taller Masts - only more sail area or changed center of gravity also? (more heeling) Only stats change or changed ship model (rig, sails, masts)? Taller masts are thicker -> changed hitbox
  • Air Pipes - again: model or only stat change? Which stats change? Crew moral, less sick people? At the moment there are no crew moral and sickness parameters in the game. A crew that always got air pipes are used to it and only will get demoralized if you do not get air pipes on anew ship, right?

Things like:

  • Economy
  • Rank systems in the navies
  • Scaled Open World with weather system
  • How to get provisions? Buy all in every harbor or gather by an exploring party, which harbor / town will sell what? Will there only be a provisions parameter or do you have to select the cured meet, living animals, potatoes, vegetables, ... by yourself?

... are much more important at the moment and will take a very long time to work as intended.
I don't say it is bad to have this ideas in the forum, but there are many new people playing that game who never wrote a "Hello World!" program or know how long it takes for an idea to end up working in a game.
So be patient and enjoy the anticipation to the open world with working economy and then this ideas will perhaps get started to be realized.

I agree. However the devs have said that basic ship customisation is coming in the next 4 months.

A portion from the update plans:

Here are our development plans for this winter and spring: Jan-May 2015.

3. Ship customization
•Ship parameters randomization
•Simple ship upgrades

Good to see this post I too would like to suggest player being able to choose certain colour schemes for their ships.

Like the OP I would give the players the choice between the colours the ship had according to the sources the model is based on or generic national colours based on historical stereotypes.

Afaik there were no standards for paint schemes that’s why I’m saying “stereotypical”. Basically what most people associate as a paint scheme for the nation within the time frame of 1700 to 1800 simply because that’s probably the most recognisable era.

For an example let’s take a look at USS Constitution:

The actual colour scheme is currently in the game but let’s say the player aligns himself with France and chooses the stereotypical national colours. The result would be something akin to Acheron from the Master & Commander movie.

Instead of the black hull, white stripe, decorations and masts with cyan bulwarks the player would get a black hull, dark orange/red stripe, wooden masts, golden decorations with dark red bulwarks.

From this:

To this:

If the player aligned himself with Britain and choose that generic colour scheme the stripe would be ochre or yellow and so on you know the “Nelson Chequer”:

I wouldn’t allow players free reign over the colours as it would probably end up in a fantasy mess.

However predefined colour schemes based on history implemented by the developer I would like to see that.

Most of these are pretty good, I'll have to take issue with a few though:

  • "Sail spankers"???  There were reefing ties, maaaaybe telltales that will lie against the sail in a certain way based on how it's drawing (though I believe that's a modern invention), but I've never heard of what you describe.
  • Sliding doors for the sail room?  Did this exist?
  • Torpedoes?  I think these were more like a modern naval mine.  No thanks - they were never really widely used, and I think they'd be too easy to use to grief.
  • Moving chasers - as extra cannon, this didn't happen - you'd need an empty gun port and mountings, breechings, etc. for it.  If you mean moving a side cannon to the bow or stern to act as a chaser if there wasn't already a chaser there, this is planned as a crew skill last I heard.
  • Lanterns - Not sure what you're getting at here, I'd love to hear your idea.
  • Extra Gun Ports - not sure I like this idea.
  • "Depth Sound Rope" - Leadlines and deep sea lines were standard equipment.  This isn't a customization really.
  • Speed Log was also standard equipment, no customization here.
  • Thicker planking isn't something you just bolt on.  This should be a ship construction feature only, not an "aftermarket" modification.
  • Nails - More bolts than nails I think, at least for the hull.  Many yards skimped on copper bolts, which caused a number of ships a lot of problems with their seaworthiness.  Changing these out though should require a drydock and a LOT of cost.
  • Timber Seasoning - Also a new construction cost item, not a later modification.
  • Antiscorbutics were standard on most vessels of the time - definitely standard on navy vessels, where I believe a certain amount was required.
  • Planking over hatches????  I have no idea what you mean by this.  Hatches were designed to be battened during heavy weather, it wasn't an option.
  • Repositioning of ladders doesn't make any sense.  They usually weren't temporary items.
  • Better Storage - at the cost of what?  You didn't usually sit down and redesign the shipwright's plans, and the entire bilge, minus any powder platforms or cable tiers, etc, could be used as storage.
  • "Adjusted Balance" - This would be using ballast stones/water, or repositioning stores to allow the ship to "sit" better in the water.  This is a cargo management issue that I'd like to see in the game.
  • Waist guns?  Not sure what you mean here.

Some ideas I like especially:

  • Paintwork should fade and be damaged over time.  Same with the rigging blacking.  File this under "ongoing maintenance costs".

I wish developers could link all these upgrades to exploration world. The more exploration you do the more upgrade blueprints you find. Blueprints can be used same way like in POTBS citations exchange etc. Great list!

I would like to see customization in the game for ships. Deep, rich, customization. Not all your ideas I agree with, such as Torpedoes. But the general idea is there.

-Cannonball

The torpedos were sort of a throw away comment. I was just thinking of every possibility.

  • 1 month later...

What does that mean? Parameters?

It means each ship is created with slightly differing performance 'parameters'. For example: Two yachts made in the same yard, from the same materials will have slightly different characteristics. One may get to 12knts close hauled while the other reaches 13knts on the same point of sail. However the former may carry more leeway than the other.

These 'parameters' will be hidden to the players so you will have to work out your ships pros and cons yourself.

The randomization factor is basically small random differences that each ship of the same class had, no two ships will be exactly alike, or improvements due to the quality of a particular in game ship yard .  For example, the HMS Victory was unusually maneuverable for her size, however even from copying the exact lines and timbers, the British were not able to make another first rate that had the same performance characteristics of the Victory.

Some of these upgrades sound similar to Uncharted Waters Online's upgrades.
