Question about mast thickness on different sections

Recommended Posts

How are mast sections divided and what are the thickness on each section?.

For example a ship that has mast thickness 100, i suppose that would be the "thickest" part, (lowest part of the mast). What thickness would that mast have on middle part and top section?.

Any info on this?.

Mast HP

  • Lower section 10-15% of side HP (depends on class)
  • Mid section 0.67 of base
  • tops 0.23 of base

Thickness

  • Base 160-180% of hull thickness.  (160 light ships - 180 heavy)
  • Mid section 70% of base
  • Tops 40% of base

Dont know if still accurate.

So the thickness we see on ship stat represents this: Lower section 10-15% of side HP (depends on class)

In that case mast thickness of 100, would mean middle mast thickness 70 and top mast are 40?.

So considering most battles shallow water fire at eachother from less then 250 m (?), wouldn't that make pino ocote mast for example, hell even elite french rig obsolete in close combat?.

Most carry 32 pound carro , which penetrate 87 at 250 (even with no mods), so even with 124 mast thickness 32 pound carro would penetrate middle mast even at 250 m.

So at close/medium range mast upgrades are pointless on shallow water ships. Unless you keep good distance.

Time to replace my pino ocote?..😉

Thickness mods on shallow ships can(with extensive caveat) be useful on shallow ships. Keep in mind that angle of impact matters for thickness. At 50-100 meters very little can be done to protect masts from 32s but beyond that range, with thickness and the decline of the shot’s arc, it can deny the pen. Winged out ballast is better all around though, as it at least buys you an extra hit. From 3-5 to 4-6 is minor but can help

edit:

also keep in mind the 5% pen bonus from Gunnery 4, 124 thickness base masts can still be penned close in on a relatively flat hit

Mast mods will allways give you and advantage, and if its only to survive a few mast hits more befor it falls down anyway, they wont make you invulnerable. If you are on close range and recieve mast hits, the trick is to activate rig rep befor the masts falls, to restore its hp while you retreat to a safer distance again ;)

how does this work on AI? I popped away with a pickle on an AI snow with multiple mast hits with 18 pound carros and did nothing

you would think 5X mast hits would do something in a salvo
