Mortar Brig, should it be removed?

Recommended Posts

Is the mortar brig worth even being used now?

Pre release the mortar brig was able to fire 4 rounds every 30 seconds doing about 680 points per round. With each firing usually 1 or 2 shots would hit the target due to spread. So this calculates to a dps of about 39 damage per second. Now the mortar brig can only fire 2 shots every 65 seconds with 1 round typically hitting the target due to spread. So the calculated dps has dropped to 13.78.

For ship to ship combat (not including the mortar) the mortar brig has the same damage output as a basic cutter (300 points of damage using medium guns) meaning that the only ship weaker than the mortar brig is the lynx. This makes leveling up in the ship nearly impossible without help from another player. No other ship in the game requires that another person be present to accomplish such a basic task as gaining experience. Add to this that the MB requires more experience to level than all but one other 6th rate ship. To further add to the demise of the ship, it is also the slowest ship in the game except a 1st rate. This means that even a 2nd rate ship with no modifications is able to catch the mortar brig. A ship that carries 96 cannons is faster than a ship that carries 14, and that 96 cannon ship, four of the guns on that ship weighs more than ALL the guns on the MB (including the mortars)

The damage per shot was increased to 896. So with one shot hitting each time the DPS is now 13.78. Yes they increased the damage by 30% and reduced the rate of fire by 75%. The mortar was decreased in its rate of fire to about half and the perk no longer adds 2 extra shots. Not to mention that the accuracy has been decreased as well by an untold amount.

there is no point bringing a mortar brig now because you can just steamroll the tower/fort with the 1st rates, its unly useable in the shallow port battles and 10k port battles

Even in shallow port battles it is questionable due to the range increase given to the towers and forts. Now the only way to take out the emplacement is to have someone sacrifice their ship taking fire from the fort for the 10 min it takes to destroy it (provided the mortar brig hits every time)

The Mortar Brig like some other ships in the game are currently useless and will never be used, but they will not remove them because they count ships as content.

Sad. To think that in 2017-18 some people specialized in Mortar brig play for PB - and it was fun trying to destroy the towers before someone in a Surprise came after you!

I know, I was one of them and my wife was another. We had a lot of fun seeing who could take out a tower faster. Now, she wont even play the game at all.
