Dynamic BR depending on the state of ship in therms of how many available upgrade slots there are. +/- 50 BR so a 1 slot l'ocean will have 900 - 100 = 800BR vs a 5 slot l'ocean will have 900 + 100 = 1k BR.

Would bring more interesting options to battles aswell as hopefully reducing the amount of frankenships out there

what about making it change not based on amount of slots, but instead based on amount of mods which are already equipped ? (and maybe perks such as fast/very fast/very sturdy etc.) woodtypes and port bonuses should also affect the final BR

this option is better I think!

Can somebody give me an example where this will improve Something?

In Portbattles? Or you mean in OW? So when im sailing alone with my 1-slot-Ocean (BR 800) and i meet Ram Dinark in his golden 5-Slot-Ocean (BR 1000). Then my battle stays open so my friend with his Essex can jump in and Help me sink Ram without opening the Battle for Ram's friends ... ? You mean that?

I'm guessing it's pure OW related as filling PB BR would be harder depending on diffrent people showing up with diffrent ships. I'd rather go for a kill count or reputation system that could alter your/ your ship's BR by a couple digits. The mods path isn't so bad since best ships often use best mods. Do we cound guns such as Edinos/Naval/Blooms? On the other hand it's an MMO, so gear is "everything".

Edit: There's also a popularity path. It's kind of unrelated to main post but still connected to topic. You could adjust the BR based on popularity of the ship. In theory it should autobalance after a while  giving a space for versitality. Or it's just a daydreaming

Also, this wouldn't work as 900 vs 1000 is a closed battle ;) by 30BR Nvm, was chaged to 800.

P.S. It was announced that they'll work on upgrades soon, don't know if we're patient enough to wait

That's just only a half way to successful solution of BR problem.

Dynamic BR shoud be calculated as follows:

  • Basic BR is defined with basic ship's stats (just hard stats without wood, trim etc), 3 slots, and full crew.
  • Then that basic BR should be modified, based on difference between basic ship's stats and its actual characterictics (calculated with woods, trim, modules and optionally even books) + number of slots + number of crew.
  • Of course some characteristics should be more important (e.g. - HP and thickness) than others (e.g. speed and maneuverability).
  • Optionally you also can take in consideration even guns (using for that the weight of broadside with modifier for carronades).

And so the BR of two ships of the same class can be completely different depending on the way ship fitted.

P.S. But that's method is quite difficult, resource consuming and therefore highly unlikely to be used by Devs

Why do you care about br? Battles should simply close after 2min, who is in can fight, who is not cannot join, but wait outside for the survivors.

Portbattles should be restricted to a certain ship type as the biggest to be used.

Br is an artificial number, that shall help to compare ships, but it is more a guess than measurable.

I like you man and you always have smart input but I don't like this idea because its a compromise to an overall greater problem. You are aware of the problem. You might like compromises but I don't believe game design and politics have anything in common. Let me ask you this. Why do we need frankenships in the first place? What is their point? What do they add to the overall gameplay quality of naval action? IMO nothing. Maybe ask @admin because naval actions obsession with mods is so far beyond my comprehension that maybe the problem is not the mods but my lack of intelligence.

we dont need them, im just throwing out desperate suggestions to help justify that a ship should have over 30% repair bonus.

A great solution to avoid these 14kn lineships would be to force them being made out of live oak and white oak (especially 1st and 2nd rates), maybe let the 3rd rates be able to combine with teak. If we look at Rust, probably one of the biggest sandbox games or even minecraft we all know that to craft HIGH END items, you cant use low and cheap assed materials. Just my take, but i think they wont change anything tbh :)

Three problems that causes players to leave:

- A perceived lack of ability to fight mods/port bonus'.. Either remove them entirely (preferable) or make them readily available.

- Lack of designated roles for the shipclasses.. We know that a SoL couldn't open it's lower gundecks in rough seas or at full speed, so why not make differentiated hard caps for the different tiers, fx. SoL 8kn-9kn, 4th rates: 11kn, 5th rates: 12kn and everything goes for 6th rates, but limit the turnrate especially for the frankensnow that shouldn't even be sailable since it should sink everytime there's a storm on the server.

- The grind req for RvR.. The game REALLY, REALLY need a good war. Can any1 disagree with this? - But we won't have it as long as RvR is locked behind large BR ports, a huge grind, uncompetitive port bonus' and mods.

Related but not gamebreaking issues:

- A shallow economy

- A shallow gameplay experience.

The problem however is:

Even if these issues were solved.. Do we really believe that players that experienced the state of NA post release will come back just to try out how it is now?

As I see it, poor decisions and the "yes"-men killed the game. What we have now is not a MMO, because there's not a "massive" online playerbase.

To account for player skill, why not another system based on pvp, some kind of bounty value (= elo). For example, sinking higher rate ships increases your bounty level (with a modifier for enemy's own bounty level, lower = less bounty increase for you), sinking lower rate ships does nothing, and getting your ship sunk lowers it according to the enemy's bounty.

also this, the player's pvp k/d should matter in terms of BR, since thats where we base it of if its a fair fight or not

I do not see any advantage of this.

Please do not propose something that makes things more complicated than they already are.

Yes, it breaks the KISS principle.  BR is fine.  BR should be the same regardless of mods, slots or crew size.  It's a player's own fault if he goes out in an undermanned, zero slot ship.

it's still more powerful to some degree, it doesnt mean that the BR change has to be very high though, what he proposed was +50 change or something like that, not double the BR
what will this improve? eh well, the ships might end up (but it doesn't mean that they will) being classified more accurately, not a big deal

it wouldnt matter that much in a 1v1, but a 1 slot l'ocean would be on par with a 5 slot bucentaure in terms of modules available etc,

The problem is, if I see a La Renomee I open world, I assume it's BR is 130.  If I tag it in my Herc, (BR 110), I know im under and the battle will close in 2 minutes.  With all these convoluted ideas on "improving" the BR, I would not know what im getting into.

This removes the incentive for seal clubbing, aka good players on good ships sinking new players on shit ships, as the BR difference will be such that there would be (close to) no reward.

This is already in place.  If you sink a TBrig with a Trinco, you get barely any xp, reals, or PVP marks.  Players still do it because any kill goes towards your missions (sometimes up to 3 missions at once).

ai would always have the base BR so it wont be a problem for you. Besides if you sail around in a gold herc with best mods vs a basic renomee you would easily kill that renomee in the first 5 minutes

Let's have the law enforcement of this NA town build a racetrack for the drivers, let's stop giving them better cars for splashing people, let's make sure people don't get splashed the first week they move in, let's make sure they don't get splashed as soon as they get out of their home, let's make sure they can change clothes when it ultimately happens - the town is advertised as a splash town after all, - let's reward splashers with better cars when they successfully splash someone with an umbrella.

Extra points for stretching an analogy.  We've all been asking for improvements that will accomplish what you ask for, but Devs are moving at their own speed.  They have told us that new player retention is on their radar and I believe we will see something in this regard....but i'm sure there will be complaints with whatever comes out.  For me, it would be simply extending the Capitol zones to 3 times their current size and ensuring there are plenty of low rank AI to farm in there.  After that, get out in OW and take your chances.  I really have no sympathy for the player in the unescorted (and unarmed) trader.  It's not seal clubbing when you kill them...it's moron clubbing.  Don't add more complications like a sliding BR scale to it.
