Dutch Snow class trading ship (snauwschip) "Unity" (1768)

Recommended Posts

The Snow class snauwschip is a lightly armed trading ship (6 to 12 guns?) that largely was used in trade with the West-Indies by Dutch trading companies.

Painting of ships from the Middelburgse Commercie Companie (Middelburg's Commercial Company), a southern branch of the VOC. Traded also a lot of the African population to South America and Caribbean in the 17th and 18th century. Ship on the far right is "Eenigheid" ("Unity") (close up picture). Though these look different from the plan and animation below. So not sure why the difference.

The plan below is that of the general ship class, not a specific named ship.

Cheers :D Trying to find plans and such on the internet. I could go to the Amsterdams Scheepvaart Museum, which is closeby, or Maritiem Museum Rotterdam, but that'd cost me quite a dime for entry, travel and probably building plans as well =/

If it was paid for by Game-Labs, I wouldn't mind spending one or more days there to gather info :D

Count me in. ^^

As for other plans on this ship; can't seem to find more. Though I must admit I don't really know websites containing this kind of information.

I do want to mention the website presenting this ship: http://eenigheid.slavenhandelmcc.nl/middelburgse-commercie-compagnie-en/ship-the-unity/?lang=en

Which sparks (for me) the question whether slave trade will be implemented...

Edit: this picture might be helpful maybe: https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/nl/search/objecten?q=snauw&p=1&ps=12&ii=0#/NG-MC-654,0

I know this could be a "sensitive subject", and it's a black page in European history, yet it is there. And if kept 'abstract' it's more acceptable? In EVE Online you also have slaves as a "commodity", but maybe more acceptable as it's futuristic fictional space? Oh well, time will tell :D
