Staysails vs Mainsail Turning helper

Recommended Posts

We know that Staysails the ship sails better against the wind

We know that Mainsail the ship sails better in the wind

Now the question is ...

Which one helps the ship to turn better and which one is better for 360º ?

I've tested a lot of things, but not this.

On paper square- or mainsail force boosts should help with turning IF you use effective manual sailing. In game I actually doubt you'll be able to measure any difference.

If turning is what you're after (turning) books and mods are far, far more effective.

I find that when going backwards while turning the square sails gives you a massive turn bonus - it pretty much throws your ship around instantly, even a ship of the line. For tacking staysails are better because it takes force away from the main sail thus slowing down the process of breaking when going upwind.

In general you could say that staysails gives you most overall manouvreability because it widens your sailing profile, but it all comes down to your style of sailing and which ship you're in.

@DeathBaron

The speed guy is @jodgi and would totally agree with him. If turning is what you want, good manual sailing skills first then the books and mods. Be careful and read up on the mod additions mistakes and lost in translation occurs in the descriptions so do your homework.

Bow Figure Katherine to start. Then Optimized rudder in combination with STAYSAILs with other mods can be very effective against the wind or through IRONs. Look for a higher positive percentage RHEA number. RHEA is a missed translation for yards.

Norfolk.

Look at what sails steer the ship. Some ships steer/turn with main sails, some with rear sails, while others steer/turn with Jib or front sails. Look at your ship and see what sails it uses to turn. Then you can use mods to modify/enhance or balance the ability based on your intentions.

While testing elite spanish rig refit i noticed a definite boost to turning when using manual sails. Mainsails bonus basically gives yard power bonus.

On square riggers with big mains depower at 20 degrees from the wind and slam your self into reverse. Tack all the way over to 45 degrees before powering up the head sails and resuming normal sail.
