Little things you'd like to see

Recommended Posts

I think that, in this very rare case, historical prevalence (for or against) women avatars should be completely ignored.

Lets face this one simple fact: though we may be playing a game based in the past, we, the player, are doing so in present times, where to ignore an entire group of potential gamers would be ill-advised, and could even come off as insulting.

On that same note, I agree, especially with PotBS, that the clothing department was a bit...liberal in the terms of cloth coverage.

Women should definitely be implemented as playable avatars, but keeping within the realm of even moderate decency. (But even Mary Read and Anne Bonny would flaunt time to time, but again, we should ignore historical references in this rare case). Avoid skimpy clothing. I agree with giving the women basically the same clothing options as men, with some obvious exceptions.

William the Drake, how many people would it truly insult?  I played PotBS for many years before it became Free to Play, and I can count on one hand how many literal females that the game attracted.  I'm not going to say that this is going to be the case here, but most likely will be.  If a historically accurate standpoint is shown to be prevalent with the design of this game, chances are, it will attract male and female players alike who really want this aspect of a sailing game for once.  I've never seen ONE person ever complain in wargaming.net (World of Tanks; World of Warplanes) about the lack of female crew... because it was designed around historical accuracy, and the game has done TREMENDOUSLY well!

I guess I'm just sick of games being overcome by the thousands of female avatars, and losing touch with the historical value in connecting with those men who very much lived in a courageous and honorable culture toward women.  We strive for excellence and historical realism with respect to ship designs; why can we also not strive for that historical excellence with the uniforms and gender of those that sailed those ships, and manned those guns?

As this is a suggestions thread I am hoping that offline play will be a full and readily available option.

People like myself, an avid history buff, love recreating history in 3D environments for our own pleasure and education.

Going aboard a real ship is of course fantastic but we are highly unlikely to be able to take part in a naval sea battle or cutting out expedition in the real world.

For this reason  I love any kind of game which allows me the option of setting up a scenario, controlling aspects of all sides, allowing the action to go on without me whilst watching from various camera angles and weighing up the odds of success and testing them in an active environment.

Of course sometimes I want to be the Captain or the Admiral and lead my ships into battle and test my skill against the enemy but personally I never want that enemy to be a real person nor do I want to play alongside anyone else in a co-op situation. Call me unsocial if you like but my real world is full of enough cooperation and competition and when I play I want to play alone.

I have not seen up till now weather this is to be primarily online or if the offline options will exist but here is my vote for a fully functional offline player experience

Welcome Hamm, good point well made. Might be worth it's own topic so others can support your idea (I certainly do) without distracting from the topic of this thread. Also, it's 'course' rather than 'coarse' for that usage :)

EDIT: Sorry, just realised how hypocritical the above is, my apologies. My intention was to suggest that your single player idea is a huge one and is well worth a topic of its own.

Gavel, again I'm sympathetic with your position and agree with your general point - I don't fancy seeing the world of NA filled with some of the female avatars seen in some other games. For me though it's a mistake to use that as a reason to wipe women out of this game. Far better to include female avatars/characters/names (we don't yet know how this is going to be dealt with in game), but simply not make them with fantasy figures and the dress sense of a wannabe starlet trying to make a splash at a porn actor's convention. I appreciate 'normal' male and female characters may not pander so hard to the idealistic escapism these games tend to represent, but my god it'd make a welcome change!

Baggy, On that note, we both may agree upon the notion of properly dressed lasses. But I dare say, I do hope that the crew does NOT include ladies, and holds true to historical truth on this matter.  I do understand the wishes of the public to include the female avatar on the basis of fun.  Like yourself, I am not prepared to see them dressed in anything less than honorable.  That is my notion.  I thank you for your input to this matter.

Lighthouses that work in storms. dynamic weather, mid battle a storm rolls in and we all have to storm storm anchor and wait . Crew getting shabbier the longer the voyage and SCURVY bleeding gums boils and teeth dropping out ! Dolphins riding our bow wakes ! shark attacks on men overboard  ;) Whale spouts, men cleaning the decks (especially after battle) and that Venetian flag is beautiful I figure I know which nation I will be sailing with ! (yes purely for the flag)

I would love to see period lighthouses in game, and I believe bad weather had been implemented. A ships supplies dictated the crews health. I think things like bleeding gums, rotting teeth, etc (though very realistic) doesn't really add to the game. The time that developers would have to put aside to make sailors teeth drop out could be used in other ways. I do agree with you however that some sort of crew diseases should exist in game, but left to a counter to tell us how many crew are infected and how many have succumbed entirely. If the disease is infectious it could spread to your officers. As crew are infected, they are removed from the deck of your ship. (They should probably be shacked up with the ships surgeon who can treat them if you have the right supplies aboard.) Again, a counter will work sufficiently here, until the developers can get around to adding (animated) crewmembers into the game.

Shark attacks were very rare on sailors, but existent as you say. Being able to see dolphins, sharks, whales and other creatures of the deep would be fantastic!

I think crew diseases would be an irritant rather than an add enjoyment to the game unless the game possessed a mechanic for keeping supplies on your ship to keep your crew healthy but I dont think I care to go that deep. Fed maybe for morale purposes but nothing else. Now, if you linked crew diseases with boarding a rich looking plague ship then I would be more for it

i would really like to see dynamic wind. Wind that wraps around mountains, speeds up when it squeezes through two island, leeward calms would be a great mechanic although I dont know if this request really fits into the "little things you'd like to see" thread.

I should like to see weather affecting the fighting ability of ships. A heavy swell would force the lower gun ports to close, preventing the heaviest guns being used, storms would damage your sails and rigging if you sail through them with full sail etc.

personally( being a player of STO and its many "woman" ), I can understand your irks with those people, and I would also like to say that not ALL men that play women have "that" intention, and thus should not be judged in that way to the point of complete exclusion to the game, which in itself would put me COMPLETELY off. As for the Clothing idea, I propose an Alternative.

In PotCO, male or female you started off with baggy clothes with easily visible lines of sewing  and such. These would be free upon character creation and cost a meagre fee for more, notable 10gold or such, however, there was also the better clothing, most PotCO players would agree with me in saying that the Monthly clothing was certainly the "highest quality" in the game, these items would cost incredible amounts of money, 1000 or 2000 gold. I believe that instead of taking away higher grade clothes in the game, make them harder to get, as would be of clothing fitting a "noble".

As for little things in the game, I would like to see some proper length hair, im BORED of all these MMORPGS with half-assed shoulder length hair. I find that my characters hair is one of my most important decisions when making/customising a character, as of such deserves some attention, but maybe that's just me. >.>

+1

We need, at least, scurvy and the yellow-jack.   Scurvy would provide important economic locations, imagine owning the fresh vegetable concession at Cape Horn.   A captain who has trained his crew to 100 loyalty and 100 skill would think long and hard before accepting a mission to the West Indies when the yellow fever could wipe out 3/4 of his crew.

Guns we not sure yet. You can change gun types on each deck and will be able to pick the number of guns on it. But inside that deck they will need to be similar (technology and ui limitations).

I hope that choosing more/heavier guns will impact the sailing qualities of the vessel

I'd like to see an appropriate ship's compliment of the staff, depending on the type and size of the vessel, visible on deck.

I'm sure it's be said, but an authentic signaling system with flags and lanterns would also be great, at least in the future, not perhaps the most important thing.

One of the things I would really love to see is wind shadow. Because of an island or -far more interesting- because of another ship...

That would make racing real fun, also.      :D      Or, even, just screwing around with your buddies, when fleeting.

I second Oneironz's post above me.

If there are towns with locations we need to visit, I would like to double click that location on a mini map and auto run to that location.

Also, idk if NPC a.i.  is a "little thing" considering no MMO has intelligent NPC's and few single player games have decent bot a.i., but it would be nice if totally outclassed NPC's tried to run away on their best point of sail or struck their colors when the cause is hopeless.
