Ligatorswe
How would it be with galleys and other ships of the same type, in the game? And what would its characteristics be?
admin
How about a 24 gun light frigate with oars. there are some fascinating models.
Ligatorswe
Yes. Af Chapman in Sweden constructed some very interesting frigates. Like hemmema ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemmema ) and Turuma ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turuma ) The rusians later copied this design, that was originally the work of Chapman.. Crankey
Interesting post , there were certainly quite a few examples of galleys still in use both as national ships or privateers / pirates. As well as the oared unrated/small rated ships the OP has already mentioned. galleys particularly in the Mediterranean, Caspian, Black sea, Persian gulf etc. an interesting addition to the game whether as player commanded or AI as opponents. Perhaps we will sea their use in specific missions. Lets not forget the large harbour guard boats that carried a varied sized cannon or carronade in the bows, quite lethal against grounded or becalmed vessels. Ligatorswe
Or the russian odryi-class with 32 cannons.http://threedecks.org/index.php?display_type=show_ship&id=21215
Destraex
Sweeps (oars) were common on smaller ships. Oars were so brittle though.
BrutishVulgarian
It would be nice if a few small areas of the globe had some occasional flat calms where oared gunboats could show their stuff, not too many areas though, it would be pretty boring to be in a sailing ship, unable to move. It would force development of the use of ships boats and kedge anchors with springs attached in order to move or turn a broadside to face a threat.
admin
galleys will come some time in the future after crew management is implemented. Galleys will require fatigue to be implemented. We will open a discussion on oar based gameplay when we are ready.
Tief N Tote
I must admit I would think it funny to bring a galley to the Caribbean and it is debated if any did make it or if attempts were made to bring them over
Ned Loe
Galleys would be good for a specific world region. We don't want galleys in Bahamas.

I hope that we will get collision boxes for oars as well, so we don't have tons if beetle legs clipping with hulls. Galleys should be ironically very vulnerable to ramming. You can just run alongside and snap off all the sweeps. This opens the possibility for snow-sized vessels to use sweeps as well.
SchurkjeBoefje
I think the French also used quite a lot of galleys in the Med, out of Toulon.

They were also being used on frigates in at least the earlier part of the century, the 'Galley frigate' was one of the most versatile designs, one that was utilized, often highly effectively in hunting pirates, some even fell into the hands of pirates themselves who made them their flagships… would be interesting to see what that tactic of combatting them would add to the game dynamic
