Preble 79 Posted June 16, 2017 About Live Oak--while it's certainly heavy and strong (and wears out shipbuilding tools to no end), I'm not convinced that Live Oak framing decreases speed in the real world as much as these stats would suggest. It says here that white oak frames were in one case changed for live oak frames "to increase her capacity and speed," and in another to add durability. https://books.google.com/books?id=jWU7AQAAIAAJ&pg=PA30&lpg=PA30&dq=live+oak+ship+frames+speed&source=bl&ots=C7szIHzSFp&sig=LHal9FXbMDE7eB9Jng98U-ziOZg&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjj5LzSmsPUAhVCcD4KHTRKAPwQ6AEIQDAG#v=onepage&q=live oak ship frames speed&f=false

Fargo 287 Posted July 23, 2017 Still very bad balancing. For a basic combat ship 8 out of 9 frameparts are useless, so are 4-5 out of 7 planks. 63 possible combinations, 2-3 viable combinations. Pls work on it, only small tweaks are needed. Here an actual comparison including the most important boni: (References arent perfect, but thats roughly how i would evaluate them as a experienced captain and shipbuilder. Results fit reality, so it cant be far off. (Reference means value of 1% speed equals value of 1,5% turnrate, etc.))

Fargo 287 Posted July 24, 2017 (edited) 2 hours ago, Quineloe said: So Teak Frame, Mahagony Planking is best according to you? And whiteoak planks ofcourse. Mahogany is quite specific, and only best when crew loss matters and you need the speed. When hull damage is a bigger problem (probably in most cases), whiteoak planks are better. When you want speed and hull resistance, its also whiteoak, cause there are no faster planks with balanced hull boni. Quineloe 1,337 Posted July 24, 2017 When going broadside / broadside with AI ships for fastest kill, thickness doesn't really matter - they're gonna penetrate anyways. But reduced crew loss => reduced crew rebuy. I assume having Mahagony does the same thing as Iron Knees in that regard, they're the same stats? sounds like the teak Mahagony ship is the perfect one for grinding AI. The reduced crew rebuy cost is really the last thing you should care about. When you make 30k in a mission you dont care about +-300g crew cost... Mahogany only makes sense for PvP in my opinion. Use Teak/wo and angle enemy shots, or keep some distance when you want to reduce repair/crew cost. Unless youre hugging the AI, its better in every other situation. There is also a skillbook that reduces crew loss by 15%, thats also why its not easy to evaluate mahogany. You basically have to use this skill on a mahogany ship, cause otherwise a teak/wo ship using the skill would outvalue you. You save one skill slot, but not many skills can outvalue the remaining difference between mahogany and whiteoak planks. Also assumed 15% crew resistance would be sufficient, mahogany would be quite useless. Thats a problem with upgrades/skills beeing as powerful as the frameparts and planks itself.
