Developing non-combat Gameplay

Recommended Posts

Sailing on unarmed or lightly armed  traders in enemy waters is fun on PvP servers and potentially on PvE server (with the addition of aggressive bots).

Current features of that sort are war supply and some delivery orders. Providing new incentives to do so would be great.

Call them exploration missions, spying missions, whatever…

The principle is the same : sail to enemy waters, experience a sense of thrill, do something, get a reward, sail back.

Give whatever reward to the captain sailing in enemy waters and/or the members of his nation or his nation : XP, gold, hostility point, craft XP, part of special BP, upgrade for forts, price reduction for some resources…

Make captains do whatever in enemy territories : delivering, collecting, staying still in front of an enemy port during x minutes…

Make distance to travel and related reward vary.

It’d populate the OW, favour OW fights, add gameplay for non-fighters, encourage longer voyages in OW.

IMO, the Alt issue should be discussed separately.

Some examples :

1) Spying mission

- stay still in front of an enemy port for 3 minutes

- Reward : say 20 crafting XP for every crafter of the spying nation…

2) Exploration mission

- Collect items along the enemy coast (marked by icons)

- Reward : Exploration XP

Comment. Any idea for « mission » ?

3) Missing Letters

A merchant ship carrying letters destined for the governor of Willemstad has not been sighted for days. Rumor has it that local tribes spotted a big wooded vessel stuck on a reef. Reports of which reef very from "Deadmans point" to "Little stone reef".

-Search for the merchant and hail it's captain. Take the letters and report back to the governor of Willemstad.

Followup-mission:

The governor is pleased with your performance. The news of the stranded merchant however concerns him deeply. He want's you to assist in any way, so that maybe the vessel can be rescued/salvaged. Take plenty of resources to repair the merchant if possible.

-Go back to the merchant and repair his ship. *1 medium repair is needed to give to the captain, via hail.*

And of course, you can plot these to be in enemy territory etc. Maybe not directly your aim, but i hope its along the lines off. :)

I'd like to see some blockade running missions added. Something that will require small ships. :)

Something like you need to get this dispatch to port. However there are a fleet of brigs patrolling.Get to port as quick as possible without sinking...

Or maybe you have a time limit to get to port.

If ship building were brought back to capital areas, trade missions would be riskier, and more fun.  Right now capitals seem very dead. Have done trade missions and at most have seen 2 players at the same time at a capital. :)

well right now, there aren't many players on the servers too :)

all waiting for wipe and patch...

Let's wait for changes in Economy too. They might have some impact on trade missions.

I like this thought process in particular, as well as the other suggestions.

4) Mission of industrial espionnage

Sail in enemy waters

Enter enemy port

Press "Steal ship plans"

Earn (% of) ship customisation (paint, ability to change ship name...) or some craft XP for your Nation...

Sail back

____________

Variant : you have to sail to 3 different given enemy ports (and press button each time) to complete the mission

(1)Stockpile raiding

(2)Mission to go sink a number of ships in front of the shallows by a nation's ports (shallow channels) to restrict trade access

(3)Support an uprising mission. Take guns, ammo, supplys to a port to help aid uprising. If enough supplys arrive a revolt takes place (becomes pirate)

A very simple way of breaking up the historic bigger nation land monopolys we get.

It would also bring a new and different war feature. Either sink ships for hostility or fuel a revolt in a port bringing those pesky pirates into play!!

This revolt system could be triggered by a successful raid!

Either raid for resources or slash and burn.

Raid for resources standard but no money. Then Slash and burn puts the regions at 20% revolt, (but gives no resources only money), towards the original owner. To lower revolt levels the owning nation must take suppliers there to reduce percentage! Other nations can also take supplys to increase /support the revolts.

(this would give a region for pvp)

Revolts would be a new twist on rvr!

Once revolt hits 80% the port/region triggers a revolt becomes pirate then later outlaw!  Ports at 80% revolt are still raid-able etc but only for money
