Test server branch opens today

Hello Captains

Test bed has opened today. 

Some disclaimers first. Testbed is not a stable environment. It does not have the same level of stability as main servers. Number of instances available is limited but will be enough unless everyone moves to test bed. This environment is not connected to the main server databases. We will provide some xp and money and ships for you to test things we want. Sometimes it wont work at all.

How to get access to the testbed 

  • Find the game in your steam library
  • Right click and go to properties
  • Go to Beta tab
  • Enter the key    - key  FcaH2KzZXutz
  • Select the beta called: Testbed

  • And click close
  • It will download automatically. 
  • To return to the main game select none instead of testbed in the beta tab.

Main test goal: Structural damage testing

Combat model updated. Structure introduced. Ship now receives structural leaks when structure goes down (not when armor is destroyed like before). Structure affects leaks and masts integrity (you will be able to demast by bow and stern raking). This feature requires heavy tuning that is why it is deployed to the test bed.

In the future we will also test a couple of other changes increasing the role of skill in combat allowing skilled captains to dispatch enemies faster (even outnumbered)

What’s new and other changes on the testbd

  • Port battle entry is only allowed 30 mins after login at sea. This penalty can be dropped if you enter any port. If you log off at sea and login within 5 mins (disconnects etc) you don’t get that penalty
  • Zone control points are not accumulated during first 10 mins of the port battle
  • New PvE challenge added – Timed demast 
  • Tiered rewards are coded into the challenges and eventually we will provide different rewards for different positions in the leaderboards.
  • New sounds are added but not finalized yet.
  • Admiralty PVP events in admiralty zones are 6v6 now. Only 6 ships are pulled for each of the sides of combat.
  • PvE challenge ships should now change (rotate) automatically 

Tunings:

  • Map zoom increased 2x in commander tablet
  • Port battle time increased to 105 mins
  • Accuracy and damage from land based guns increased by 15%
  • Points for kills increased by 50% in port battles instances 
  • Antigriefing 5x limiter decreased to 4x
  • Attack circle timer (ow attack) reduced from 20 seconds to 15 seconds
  • Certain changes in economy applied
  • Time to start PVE challenge reduced (only for testing)
  • If you sink in battle you will still be able to see the compass and wind indicator
  • Brace command is now a toggle 
  • All contracts that are more than 15 days long are going to be automatically cancelled from now on.

Main goal is - test structural damage and report the findings

feedback on structural damage goes here

KNOWN ISSUE. mast destruction from structural damage sometimes crashes the instance - it will be fixed early next week.

Wait what?   So ya'll are doing with the test server thing?  Sweet I was figuing that would be a reason to merge the servers and than make PvE or PvP2 the test server.   

 

I think this test period is to test the changes announced in November last year regarding ships and upgrades. 

If they launched them on the servers now for testing, it would make current ship builds and upgrades useless.

Sounds like we get a server dedicated to old-school-pre-EA testing, internal testing is for the weak anyway! We definetely need more interesting bugs. Like it, hopefully it will only attract the real "testers" and not players that are only hungry for more content...

constant wipes during the test server would prob be a good way to weed out those type of folks.

Dangit what nation should I pick?   

 

Ok warning every one you start all over as a new player.  I would like to say I'll be going Pirate with my main account and prob do a National with my second.  So be warned I'll be hunting you down in the shallows......all noob like lol

 

All the while testing these new mechanics of course.  Not sure how this will get us to test port battles.  Going to be a lot of shallow water ones first?

 

Ops didn't see the redeemable.....dang kinda wanted to be a noob.

I belive that the PVP event is best as everyone for himself. No nations no nothing. if u are in the area u are a target. Get points while in the event area, more points for sinking ships/players and winner gets rewarded. But carrefull here if u win an event u get cooldown period. This way we all get a bigger chance to be amongst winners.

I went to the test server and did some battle with people from the clan and i felt the following:

1. The middle health bar on the ship makes a mast drop, i don't really like this since you get it down with just sternrakes, all we did in the battles was sternraking and nothing else.
I like the idea but more as a healthbar visible for the controller of the ship and not for the enemy. The enenmy will see a color change from blue to orange to red. and sternrakes will not effect the masts as much as they do now.
2. I think it would be nice if we can buy all ships out of the shop so we can test them, ofcourse bigger ships are more expensive so you have to do more battles to receive these. But just so we don't have to start crafting and can focus on ship testing if needed. Even if they are just green ships. with bad mods.

Else i loved the idea of a test server and this is a big step in the right direction.
It is great that it is not an entire new game we have to download but can just make a patch when we want to go to the testserver.

Devs, your current damage model is really good.  Yes it could use some minor tweaks to improve it, but it doesn't need huge changes.  What we really need is more PvP content.  Port battles is the only good PvP content in your game right now but hostility generation and the 2 day wait is bottle-necking access to epic PvP battles (content). 

The Admiralty PvP event is ok, but its really not enough.  Although making it capped at 6v6 seems like a good move.

Please work on adding new PvP scenarios.  With port battles we have capture and hold the locations.  We need more stuff like this.  It doesn't have to be focused on capturing a port. 

I feel like a broken record but I would really like to see PvP events where we have scenarios like:

Escort the trade ship (trade ship player controlled)

Destroy the tower

Maintain a blockade on a specific port. 

You know, PvP content where we have objectives to accomplish.

You have a beautiful open world, a fantastic combat system and more then enough beautiful ship models in the game.  We just need PvP content.
