How far should I sail to get to a wreck after I opened a bottle?

Today, I opened a bottle two squares south of the Cayman Islands. The wreck appeared off the coast of Florida, near Cabo Canaveral!

That's 10 squares distance as the crow flies! And, 28 squares (2+ hours sailing?) distance by ship!

Are the Devs joking, or what?

Just open another bottle as far away as your capital and hope it lands nearer.   There was just too many bottles going on and too many gold upgrades making reaching level 50 crafter pointless.

The bottle is free, and everything from the shipwreck is free. You need to do some work to earn it. Mindless sailing is pretty easy, albeit time consuming.

for the gameplay it is not good to have them so far away you need to sail for real hours and not doing anything more. many maybe cant play more then 2h a day and those must be hunting a bottle for 2 to 3 real days just for one bottle

Second most distant free port from your position. Should be okay even if opened at a capital.

It's just some sailing to do, you have to choose if you want to do battle and gain nothing due to crew cost, or sails for two hours and gain 400 000 to 2 000 000 in two hours, with chances to get other bottles on the way, only issue here (if it is an issue) is that you don't gain xp.

Don't you want to get the wreck in the protected area of your capital ?

To me it is well balanced like that, bottle are lot more profitable in term of time, so more than being balanced, ship wreck hunting are easier than anything in the game for now. it is just boring to sail, play on a portable system that you own PSP, DS or even a phone *vomiting* and it will be fine.

4 hours of real life sailing with a fast lynx to a bottle is too far :-)

I just sell them now - good for my nerves and it saves me some time.

4 RL hours ?? From where to where ?

It takes me 40' to sail to a wreck (in a Rattlesnake).

new player get a bottle lets say cabo bottle spawn south of mugeres count the time. I had that one now and I hade a port closer then that. but new players that dont have the cash cant have ports like that. So it need to change to get closer. thay will not play games that thay need to sail for houers and houers and not do anything.

but thise is no bug but how they have program it for now so.

Use the bottle as an inspiration. See where it lies, then decide to smuggle your way in and out of enemy ports trading or raid other players along the way. You don't just have to sail straight to it. Make a day of it and visit some ports you've never been to before. It's rewarding and it adds more aspects for your game play.

wreck exploration needs long-distance travel.

What's the use of small distance besides farming ?

There are lots of activities that takes smaller distance : trading, missions...

The only thing of interest with wrecks and exploration is sailing far away from your home port across enemy territories encountering dangers.

And if wreck travel takes too long for someone, one can travel in stages while fishing, earning travel XP, even trade or do mission.

One doesn't have to make the trip shorter but more interesting.

4 RL hours ?? From where to where ?

It takes me 40' to sail to a wreck (in a Rattlesnake).

Rattlesnake??

I took one out thinking to be cute by getting to wreck faster and armed well enough. Once I got to wreck, the treasure trove was beyond the limit of the Rattlesnake's cargo hold (+100#) thus NOT allowing me to collect anything! Forced to turn back to port to retrieve my trader vessel and make the trip back&forth twice for... iron ?? <_<

The next day, I open a bottle at Sunbury only to have the wreck off the coast of Venezuela (Coquibacoa) !!!   Seriously??!!

I understand doing some sailing, but that is ridiculous. There is NO WAY (well maybe not no way, but damn near impossible) for a bottle would find it's way from Venezuela to Sunbury (east US coast) floating on current flows. Southwest coast of Cuba would've current-force-dump the bottle somewhere in the Gulf or Yucatan. Maybe if I found/opened bottle in Bonaca.

Rattlesnake??

Yep for testing purpose about travel time

The next day, I open a bottle at Sunbury only to have the wreck off the coast of Venezuela (Coquibacoa) !!!   Seriously??!!

So it seems that some wrecks are only 40 minutes away from one's starting point. Others are 2 hours away...

Is Sunbury-Coquiba a long trip ? Yes, but I think it's a normal distance/duration for exploration. It makes you cross several enemy territories (Spanish, Pirates...) (if one refers to the starting map before conquest), meaning several risks of encountering enemies. Problem to me isn't the duration of the trip but sometimes its boredom.  One has to increasing danger not decreasing duration.

I sailed for around two hours yesterday to get a wreck. Most boring shit imaginable. Got a terrible mod. No labor contracts. I'm just going to sell the bottles from now on and let someone with no life play that part of the "game".

A game should be fun. Wrecks currently are the complete antithesis of that because AFK sailing is the most boring thing one could possibly do and the rewards aren't worth the bore-fest.

Except good luck selling them at this point, nobody wants them. I have a stack I'm sitting on that I've been trying to sell for two days. Best offer I got was 25k.

I stick by my original suggestion, if the distance is going to be this far then we should be able to pop multiple bottles at once and make one huge trip out of it.

I've ignored a couple of them and just opened the next bottle.  Some of the distances are just too much - and nothing in between to make the trip worthwhile.  On a couple of the longer distance ones I just set the smuggle flag and went buying and selling through 20+ ports until I got there.  It allowed me to explore a few ports I'd never stopped at before.

Ah yes....  did exactly the same thing....  except I never went back for the mod or the labor hours - just not worth the 2 hours of my time....
