Love and Hate Post

Recommended Posts

Snip

I do not dispute a small ship's role, or importance in both real life or in game. But the thread asked what i hate. And i just hate anything below the brig.

Having four guns to work with, cardboard armor, and heeling over every second is not my definition of fun.

I am a brand new player and thoroughly enjoying the game thus far.

My only 'negative' comment is that the ships decks etc look far to shiny.

Mess 'em up a little.

Love

1 The devs

2 Manual and automatic sailing

3 Very stable

Hate

1 Canon fire order, not in order

2 Chat system ( enter should only allow you to type 1 text and then go back to ship control, and i like to see chat history)

3 Disconnected players ships stay in game

It also takes any skill out of raking when the computer does it for you. As long as we still have to aim and we still have to do each shot even if it's 2 or 3 or 4 shots to include each deck then that's ok. But otherwise, why not just have the computer do the firing for normal broadsides as well if it's going to do raking shots? Let's do it Potbs style.

we know how to make it skill based where the captain will have to time fuses and ship speed to be able to execute it properly. (rolling raking broadside)

Seems this is still an active thread, so will give it a go.

Love:

1) visual & sound feedback of hits, when hit (well, not so much) and hitting someone else

2) 3D waves and environment in general.  Storm map is brilliant! But would love to see more range of weather more often, rather than quiet or complete storm.

3) Small ships can make a real difference in a big ship battle.

Hate: (perhaps too strong a word)

1) not having officers on deck; there are sailors, so why not officers?

2) having to awkwardly switch between 3rd person and cannon view, AND only being able to access the spy glass from cannon view.  Perhaps a true flexible 1st person view can be created, then I could use my track IR...

3) having three repairs...  With damage model 4 coming, and having shot bounce when hitting ship surfaces at angles, this should lower damage.  Hope we don't need 3 repairs anymore, it is too gamey.  Survival mode should be good enough.

I know this is just testing, and the GUI is stand-in, so likely not worth mentioning the issues with it.

Love

The Models

Switching Cannons

Stormy Seas

Hate(Dislike)

Lack of In-Game Keymap (The one posted http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/1964-keyboard-shortcuts-list-keybinding-suggestions/  is very helpful, just wish there was one ingame too)

I'd like to see in game volume control

I'd like to be able to leave rooms after joining them.

Chat enter/esc function seems very clunky to me, after submitting your msg with enter it should auto exit chat, also a chat history please.

Since you asked.  We all know the 'boarding battle mechanic' is a stand in, but some constructive comment on the current mode that could influence the final boarding battles...

A good engagement was ending with me trying to board an enemy vessel while the water was rising in my ship.  After several rounds of 'rock-paper-scissors', I had his crew down to 10 men, with me at about 70 men or more.  My ship sinks just before the last round of boarding mechanic, and I loose the boarding battle.  He sails off with 10 men (wtf!?!) and continues fighting ships, hopefully not at full perfomance, but hard to tell much difference.  A true story, everyone commented...

Why do we need to kill off EVERY member of the enemy crew?  Perhaps it would be better to have some proportion/fraction of men judge when one side looses, such as 4 to 1 odds, or 5 to 1, or whatever...  Also, if someone boards the enemy ship, then the boarding fight should not end if their ship sinks, the fight is on the other ship to capture it afterall.

Game Labs has created Ultimate General, which looks quite interesting from a top-down perspective.  Could a simplified version of Ultimate General be made to handle boarding parties???  A simplified version, not the whole thing...

Not perfect, but my yes, it would be very engaging.

I Love:

- historical setting of the game

- elegant game controls for control of ship

- visual ambient

- stability and performance

- ship models

I Hate:

- linear behaviour of wind in the testing matches

- mandatory cycle through all sails setups instead of presets

- precise smoothbore gunnery at range

Love

It's just beautiful and runs very smoothly.

Controls are easy to learn and pretty intuitive.

Shooting with ranging shots and broadsides is a really simple and fun mechanic but also requires practice and judgement.

Simple, uncluttered UI.

Pace seems just about right for my taste.

Forthcoming 24hr objective mode sounds fantastic.

Room for Improvement

Artificial edge of the map.  I understand why it's there but how about moving it dynamically so it stays centred around the majority of the ships in both fleets?  The idea being that the main vans / where the big action is will never approach the edge (unless they sail off in opposite directions).

Damage level of opposing ships shouldn't be publicly available info.  Hopefully with a bit more graphical damage displayed there will be no "need" for this at all.

Lobby needs a polish.  It would be good to see what ships are in upcoming matches.

In game chat.  Not a major issue but cancelling chat after each message would be good.

Surrender.  I would like the ability to strike my flag for example when I'm the last ship against overwhelming opposition and playing on is just holding everyone else up.

Solo practice mode.  For when people get the brig for the first time, how about a completely empty map just to practice sailing without getting shot at by anyone or even bots.

Hate

Storm maps.  I get that some people seem to love them but really I just can't believe* anyone would be trying to fight a ship in weather like that.  Perhaps a little less rough?

General

As far as I'm concerned you've pretty much nailed it and it's already a complete game even without the open world etc.  I'd be happy if this was the final version frankly.

For what it's worth, I would be willing to pay for additional ships like in Rise of Flight.

EDIT - * Note I am not particularly well read on this period so would be happy to be set straight on this or indeed anything else.

Striking Your Colors - This will be added in the future.  :)

Lobby will be polished up in the future as well.

Chat changes are on the board as I understand it - we're hoping to see improvement there in short order.

Storms - You didn't have a choice when it came to weather.  If you encountered an enemy ship in mid-gale, you didn't say "oops, it's too rough gents, we'll get him next time", you engaged if you could.  You also didn't have an easy way to avoid weather - when it came, it came.

Some great feedback here sir, thank you.  :)

3 Things I love:

The setting, (age of sail, ships of the line)

Focus on realism in all areas of NA: this is such an important aspect for me I'd mention it twice.

It takes practice, and lots of it, to become any good.

3 things I'd like to see improved:

More crew members, preferably some green types hanging on for dear life from a yard arm or two in stormy weather, whilst screaming wildly that they "Want to get off".

More wind sound, more variation, and it's far too quiet for my liking. Make it howl when it's rough. At the moment it seems there's a wind break that surrounds the ship. Those rigging lines should be whistling and humming. Please make it so.

More sound effects from the crew, perhaps even the sound of the gunnery officers/gun captains shouting commands as the crews load the cannon.

3 Things I hate:

AI ships unable to lead targets correctly when sailing parallel to their target. Doesn't provide much practice for those training up before entering pvp.

Apparent and perhaps deliberate absence of the Kraken. It's real I tell you, REAL.

Fish.

Regards

MG

Love:

-aiming mechanics

-manual sail control

-water physic

Would like to see improved:

-visible damage on the hull like in empire total war where you can see holes in the ship, destroyed cannons and killed sailors

-cannon recoil (maybe make it optional in the settings if slow computers can't handle that)

-more sounds from the crew

Hate:

-repair system

-ai does not take over when player disconnects

-once I click on battle mode I can't get out

Empire total war isn't realistic.  The holes Game Labs has are.

Interesting...I thought balls would make bigger holes.

I thought the same as well and was wanting what you wanted, then someone showed me these.

Low velocity shot makes these small entrance points and horrendous exit holes.

Love:

Open world is pretty.

Combat feels better.

The entire game.

To be improved:

Boarding Animation needs to be added.
Repairs take so little time, fixes mast in a few seconds.
Need a way to navigate, F11 and external maps running in steam don't cut it.

HATE:

Dock UI
Small guns make too much smoke

Stupid red indicator of how far ship is away is a skill breaker.

Love:

The Game (even though it's Alpha) - do not regret a single penny

The look of ships exchanging broadsides. As a new starter (just bought Cutter yday) I sometimes join bigger battle so watch battles

The look of water, it's amazing

Hate:

The number of ships. I feel it's to low. Yesterday, I spent over on hour trying to find some merchant ships ready to redistribute goods. :)

Bug with items like upgreades/cannons what get duplicated when in equipment view. Suddenly I have 5 carronades in warehouse and one on ship.

Love:

Environment (mostly).

Ship models.

Handling differences between ship types.

Helpful and mostly friendly population.

Dev involvement in forums and sometimes help channel.

Hate:

Little to no variation in sea state, wind state other than completely predictable rotation, weather state other than the very rare raging storm.

Current repair implementation.

Unable to single fire while in spyglass view. Apparently I can't talk to my gun crews and hold a spyglass at the same time.

No training rooms.

Love:

-The UI is a good start. Eventually I think a slightly more in depth crew management system would be a good idea. Assigning crew too different areas to maximize certain traits of the ship. Like shifting crew to guns and sails. Or boarding parties and guns with no sails etc, etc. also, one day maybe we could see the boarding take place in the background with some animation. Aiming the guns with an angle reference would be good too i think. But you cant make it too easy.

- The open world is awesome. Keep it up.

-The scale of the open world map takes some getting used to but its awesome!

dislike:

-No real dislikes yet. I understand this is in development so i only have some opinions of what to add.

Suggestions

-Traders, men of war and privateers. I think Players should be able to participate in one of these areas. For example, in the service you would get paid very little in gold with ships and rank being merit based. You would only need to spend gold on upgrades. Completing assignments takes you closer to promotion or a command where a privateer or trader would rely on gold to purchase everything. They would be relying on good business to purchase ships and upgrades.

-Economy: Having a economy driven by players would be awesome. Players in the service would need to escort convoys or harass enemy countries impacting their economy. Traders would have to ensure their cargo makes it safely to the destination for maximum profit.

-Map for open world. currently I use google maps on my tablet. As cool as that is, I would still like to have an in game map to use.

This is my first post after playing the game and I have to say it looks amazing. So excited to be apart of this, keep it up!

After few days ingame:

Love:   Smart AI, model quality, weather effects, entire atmosphere

Dislike:  "Flying forest" around islands, grey and dull weather, absence of a basic UI backgrounds and buttons,  ugly font

Really dislike:  unmovable UI elements, chat self-closing in battle

Hate:  Reload rate falldown after first crewman killed, self-switching fire direction (L-R), absence of navigation. Open world without you (point/direction) on the map is really ANNOYING.

Love:

  • The combat! It's fantastic.
  • The ship models and the sounds in battle.
  • Being able to have fun with friends doing missions and contraband traders and whatnot.

Improved:

  • The UI.
  • The forums (it can be a chore finding tidbits of information)
  • More ships :)

Hate:

  • Port capture mechanics. Ports change sides waaaay too easy.
  • The inconsistency between max crew for certain ranks and what ships actually need.
  • The ganking.

Aiming system needs to be improved too complicated for the casual player.

The fact your ship can start sinking from one ball. This is a nice feature yea but I think it should only be able to happen when your ship is less than 10% health ?

The ships and graphics etc look awesome and the ships appear to turn really well.

Boarding is boring and too clicky I would like to see visuals involved with the boarding or even an fps mode so you can control the captain.

No marker on the map. This is stupid especially if you're trying to link up with friends for a fight and you can't see where each other are ??

You can't thin your cone of fire to a concentrated point it appears you can only shoot the length of the ship this is bad for example when your ship is longer than an enemy ship, you will miss half the shots. This can either be fixed to allow angle adjustment from left to right with a new aiming system or by allowing single shot fire from the guns.

Aiming system is fine it will take getting use to but it is setup the way it was intended, more reliant on player skill than clicky buttons.

If you got hit below the water line it will start to sink go to survival to patch the hole.

Avatar combat is not going to be in game for awhile

No map markers is done intentionally.  There no map markers or gps back in the 7th century

you can change how the gunners aim you can make them converge to fire at a single spot if they can turn the cannons that far.
