Non-Battle/Non-Accelerated Free Sailing

Recommended Posts

Hi All.

Sorry if this is a repost. New to the forum and couldn't find a dedicated search feature, only a quick filter.

I was wondering if there was anyway to "drop out of" (for lack of a better term) the accelerated travel in open world other than in battles?  As a new player, I'd greatly appreciate the ability to practice manual sailing and maneuvering with the wind in a situation where my ship isn't being shot at.  So far I've failed to complete every mission I've accepted in my 40 crew basic cutter and I think at least being able to maneuver properly would help me get over the initial hump of sailing around in an under powered ship.

Is it possible to do this? If not, has this been discussed? Do we know if this is going to eventually be worked into the game in some manner?

---

P.S.  as a side question, I noticed in some of the older youtube videos (that I believe were still after open world launched) that players were conducting their tutorials near land masses and/or islands.  But so far, even if the battle mission is located right off the coast, I find the battle takes place in open water without any of the actual coastline near where the battle was located.  Has this been discussed at all?  Any plans to bring this back?

Thanks for the help in advance

Not possible at the moment.

wirelessfetus, That post from wind will only really be useful once you're in a square rigged ship. In your cutter, just keep the sails on auto.

However, learn to slow your ship down: Learn how long it takes for sails to be furled/unfurled and how long it takes for your ship's speed to fall off. This will be come especially handy later on, when maneuvering isn't just about how fast you're going. As well, you will find you have a more stable shooting platform if you're not under full sail (sailing as fast as you can).

In the mean time, keep taking those missions. Make sure they're Midshipman missions, so you're fighting equal opponents. As well, consider sailing open world and tracking down Trader ships. In particular, trader lynx, trader cutter, and trader brigs. Be sure they don't have escort ships in their fleet (you can find information this under their card/panel that pops up when you click on them).

Fighting unarmed traders is the single best method for practicing gunnery and seamanship, in lieu of sailing with an experienced group. A bonus being a hefty amount of loot and gold. Provided you don't ram them and sink yourself, of course. :)

Happy hunting. Oh, and check the tutorials. There's a lot of really great information out there. Youtube is already flooded with videos that will make you a proper Captain in no time.

Thanks for the response guys.  Very helpful.  Glad to see that the devs are planning in pulling in the land masses at some point.

Yea, I started just going after the traders and was able to capture a few.  Its definitely a more noob friendly approach. :D

Non-combat instances would be the wrong word. Alternative instances on a PvP server should always have some element of risk of combat. But you could choose a safer location with a small risk of combat.

Some players would love to see a option to enter an instance or "drop out" for reasons other than a battle. I think some of our competitive players may think this can impact combat so some players are opposed. Actually it should be possible to include more types instances without effecting our battle eager gamers. It could add additional dimensions to the type of combat one could expect without changing the current OW battles.

With the recent addition of land in instances we are one step closer and we can all be excited about the potential.

Some links that explore the possibilities.
